Check out the RIAA and universal music websites as well ;)

No matter if the bills pass or not, Anonymous always has the power. We have the tool congress will never have.

Im sorry chuck :-(

Can you upload it to the SL-i server? It shouldn't take long to upload via ftp, and it'll stay safe.

Its not about hosting or bandwidth.. Next week my files will be mirrored from rapidshare/2shared/filesonic/etc...

Its about the *time* and *effort* that went into it all...

20 gigs is not doable for SLi.. Cost of bandwidth is crazy... and I don't think hosting copyright FHI (C) manuals is a great move for SLi.

Ok, I dont know what this is all about. Can you explain it in something a mechanic can understand?

SOPA. Stop online piracy act.
This law gives the u.s. government to regulate DNS servers.
DNS servers act as phone book for IP addresses.
Every domain name resolves to a IP address

Beyond DNS regulating they have to power to remove anything they feel is copyright.

Example. A YouTube video with your car driving on the highway with your favorite band playing. Since the band is associated with a label who acts as the owner of that material. They have the right to remove or take legal action against you or the site.

Long story short its online censorship. SOPA gave the u.s government free reign to go against all u.s. citizens and any company / facility that resides on u.s. soil.

In the end u.s. government took action through SOPA guidelines against megaupload and is using racketeering to justify the instant take down.

All my links were hosted on megaupload.. and now.. gone...

I thought it was something like that... What else does it affect? I thought they already did the censorship thing on Youtube.

So I take it the stuff you had up, was hosted on a US server? Would it be different if it was in Canada?

Our server is actually hosted by DLC, who owns another Subaru website (LegacyCentral). It would ask a lot of him to do FTP on top of all the other stuff he hosts.

And - we could get shutdown because of this SOPA bill as well. We've got links and uploaded photos of FSMs all over the place, not to mention press release photos, and official Subaru photos.

That being said, SOPA & PIPA haven't passed - this is just the Feds flexing their cock on the internet. Don't really know what they're claiming, but they've managed to shut it down without existing laws.

chuckthefuk

SLi would get a warning before being shutdown.. I am sure FHI doesn't care since majority of the info posted is from opposedforces.com who encourages web forum use.

Feds used racketeering and SOPA's guidelines to cement their claims against megaupload.

looks like enough was done to make them realize it needs some work. Im sure it had more to do with the hacking of certain gov. sites last night as well..

Megaupload is/was based in new zealand with servers setup in hong kong though...SOPA/PIPA would have given them a lot more liberty to takedown non-us based sites simply because they *think* there's a copyright violation.

Anyway, the bill was endorsed by all the money-grubbing companies that are losing money from not keeping up with social trends and consumer practices (EG, who the hell buys a cd nowadays?) and is completely opposed by basically every large internet-based company out there, as well as basically anyone with the ability to hack into whatever website they so please...I hope the US government understands they're trying to control something that has now become a much larger entity than even they couldve fathomed.

I've come to the conclusion that they don't. Not even slightly.

And I still buy CDs. I prefer having hard copies of my stuff. I tend to stick to artists/labels that are more independent though.

But really, thats how I was back when Limewire was still around. I gladly bought independent artists because I thought they deserved it. Independent labels gave the earnings to the people who did the actual credible work. But anyone signed by a major music label was automatically pirated, because the band wasn't going to get the money anyway. It was going to the labels who didn't deserve the money.

So when Megaupload got shut down, the Feds seized the names and details of people that used Mega... so technically they could all be brought up on charges.

Until they start producing records with digital copies (or an unlock code for downloads) I won't. I'm not getting a turntable for my car.

Legally though, it's perfectly ok to make as many copies of music or games or images for your own personal use, as long as you have paid for the original item though.

So if you buy something digitally (a la iTunes), you have the right to make as many copies as you want, provided you are the only one that uses it, and you don't use it in a public broadcast or for profit. I'm never sure how a DJ in a club gets around this, because they theoretically should be paying a royalty every time they play a song.

SOPA has been shelved... I think some govt heads are a little scared about Anonymous, and with every reason too. Tick off enough internet types, and you'll have a industry war. No-one's stash will be safe, regardless of who you work for.

Yeah, the RIAA tried very hard to make this illegal too. Thank goodness the lobbyists didn't push it through.

DJs get a special license for music that they play, I do think it costs more per song. The internet age has also made things a lot easier on them. A lot of local DJs who aren't part of the "guild" or whatever they call themselves may be circumventing that though.

Interesting article speculating the real reason Megaupload was shut down:

That's just another reason why the pressure was on Gov from the industry.. But it was not the sole reason..

Its clearly outlined that Megaupload committed racketeering through their pay the uploaded for every download (range)

Even though Rapidshare and the other do the same Megaupload's content was mostly pirated movies. Megaupload stated that they take down files that void their TOS and they even gave the industry access to "link removal forms"

But its all bullshit. Icefilms.info built an empire ontop of Megaupload with over 160,000 ACTIVE links..

In the end its one large scam..

Now that SOPA and PIPA have been shelved, a new proposed bill that is even more agressive is in the works, I guess it has been for a few years now in secret. It's called ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement)

RIP Internet...
