Definitely worth reading all the way through.

Wow what an incredible article!! The ej motor is amazing!! It makes me want to build one now.
But I'm still a little confused on the differences between the ej20 and the ej205, ej255 and ej257?

The heads (and accompanying hardware/electronics) are different between them and the 1st two numbers refer to the displacement in liters of course.

EJ20 isnt a complete code. It could be ej20d, ej208, ej205 depending on the heads & accessories as I mentioned.

So what displacement is the ej255 and 257

2.5L. The "25" part of it is the displacement, as Mike Tracy said, the last letter or number refers to the properties of the engine block & heads.

The EJ255 is what is found in the 06+ WRXs and Legacy GT/Outback XT and the EJ257 is the STi motor.

EJ255 is also in the Forester STI (SG, not SF) and the S402....

I subscribe to import tuner and read that article many times. You usually see honda/nissan/mitsubishi and even mazda's engine getting covered and was happy to see the subie engine in there and what the pro's recommend on the power level you want.

Really there is only a few issues with the aging subaru EJ platform; emissions, power, and fuel economy.

Fix those, and I'd be a soob fan for life....

(Like I'm not already  )

I think with the new engines they're using in the Impreza and BRZ (direct injection at last!) that may be a reality.

yea just read up on the BRZ. Sexy but a little let down to hear it only has 200 hp. Why so little from a car that looks like it should be a 350z killer.

The BRZ isn't designed to compete with the 350/370Z. It's more like a Miata, S2000, MR2, or Lotus Elise. Pure handling, lower power. It's power to weight ratio is still on par with a 2002-2007 WRX, FWIW.

That being said, this thread isn't about the BRZ, it's about tuning the EJ turbo motors.

Ha ok your right. And what you said makes sense and if that's what their after I bet they achieved their goal.
Any way so the ej205, 255, and 257 are the usdm model wrx and sti motor?

The EJ205, 255, and 257 are all used in Japan too.

ok! In the article then they are only talking about the usdm motors?

I would think so, but cannot say definitively.

Well if any one knows where I could get one of those ej motors for my bk let me know

The dealership will sell you a complete shortblock. Used to be around $1900 for the sti block with no heads. Otherwise check here on the classifieds, craigslist or nasioc or local subaru forums to find one.

Hhmn I didn't know you could buy them from the dealership. I've been looking on copart.com for salvaged one with a good motor

I just read the IT article... it's the same as any other really; at the end there are 3 tuning shops that differ quite a bit on what needs to be changed to achieve a specific HPatw level... Crawford Perf. is the only shop that doesn't suggest changing internals until you're past 400whp.

Yea true. The most helpful part for me was just getting profesional opinion on how much the motor can actually handle. I want to build a 300 whp ej20 in my bk and its nice to know that with the right ecu tune, good lubricants, and smart driving the car can be fun but also reliable
It was an extremely helpful article for me, but I'm only three weeks into being a subaru owner
