View Full Version : Will Extra-S hurt anything??

I have a 99LGT with close to 150K, and I'm beginning to have a little difficulty shifting into some gears, getting a bit of whine from the gearbox, and I'm sure the gear oil could stand a change anyways.
So, I went to my local Subaru dealer to buy 6 qts of Extra-S when the parts guys told me I'd probably end up making the problems worse because "those old 5MT's don't like Extra-S, it's too slippery."
Sounds like BS...is there any validity to this, or should I just go buy the stuff anyways??
Thanks in advance.

There is some validity to this since the Extra-S is less slippery then other Synthetics (Mobile 1, Valvoline)
There are many examples of older 5MT's from the Gen 1 Legacy non-turbo and turbo to Version 3/4/5/6 Sti (pre 2000) all using extra-s
In some cases many online users reported using extra-s in their old 98 RS 5MT.
Most online claims state that regular Dino Gear Oil 75w90 is all you need.. I can tell you from personal experience I've been using Lucas synthetic 75w90 for 2 years in my 96' L-OB @ 405,000km currently with no issue and all syncros are top notch.
I cant tell you 100% that yes or no Extra-S is perfect for you.. But what I can tell you is STAY AWAY from Uncle Scotty's Cocktails (any cocktail that has "Redline LW Shockproof")
That cocktail will kill your 5MT!

I recommend Redline 75w90. used it in all my 5spd Subies and never had a problem that wasnt age-related
