So I'm 99% sure I need to get a new oil pump in addition to all the timing belt stuff I just picked up. Seems like its making noise right from that area around the crankshaft pulley.

So what oil pump should I get/will work on a stock ej25d / '97 legacy gt? I looked on some threads, and saw that people were bickering about the different rotor sizes on the STI pumps.

What are you guys running? Part numbers would be awesome, btw.

Thanks,
-Jon

There's no need for a larger pump, but since the WRX pumps are easy to find; grab a 10mm pump from any EJ207 motor. Make sure to clean it out before you install and check the rotor clearances.

There was a link somewhere that Wisconsin_Mark posted about the excess oiling in a high-power, turbocharged application could actually cause detriment; but other than that, I know of no reason why you couldn't go with a 10mm pump.

How do I check rotor clearances? I've got a set of feeler gauges

You want a RCM modified pump as the std Subaru pump has a flaw in the design where the surge valve sticks open so the pump only pumps around it's self . . . Bottom end killer. They also do uprated 11 or 12mm if you want a bit more pumping ability (good idea if you plan a bit of track time or to fit a oil cooler)

Is that really necessary? Does the problem come up even at stock power levels, and stock RPMs? Is there a relief valve on it that has too much spring tension on it or something?

don't go to the 12mm pump on any non avcs motor, compared to the 10mm they havea stupid flow rate and because the oiling system wont let that much through it will sit in the pump and go through the overflow valve heating up the oil...

A regular 10mm pump it is then. I just took my timing belt off and Im praying to god nothing got bent... How easy is it to bend the valves, really? The passenger cams are unloaded and spin freely, the drivers cams do not spin like that. Is that normal? Sweet Jesus please say yes.

Totally normal.
