 After a friend of mine kept pushing me to make a member's ride page, I finally gave in. This is my daily driver subie of about 2 years. I've been through some good times and bad times. I've tried mods I've found on here and created my own custom parts that I wanted to try from thought. I've seen some pretty sick rides on here that have given me a ton of ideas, but I haven't seen too many people use the RS hood scoop and vents on a Legacy on here so I though I might add a bit of variety :smt023
She currently is manual swapped with bew headgaskets.
Bought it with nothing done to it. All stock with 89k miles on everything and no rust or dents (I flipped out when I saw it first detailed :smt007 ). this is "Rubie" just getting her and detailed:

Wow same exact as mine, but my paint is not nearly as good. Lovin the front end. I was once thinking about the hood vents, but prob never going to happen.
Also details on how this was done!----- Bugeye WRX grill cut and fitted with 3rd gen GT badge?

I had absolute ZERO trunk space with that monster in there lol had to make "some" room.
The hood vents and scoop was seriously easy to do. I rear ended someone with the first hood i made. Then a couple days later, went to the junkyard to get another hood, cut the holes for the hood/vents again, painted the hood, put it together, and had it on my car in a day :smt023
But the grill was a last minute thing I did when 98legwag brought it over. He alread started cutting it for his and guess add settled in (like it does with all people trying something that takes too long to do).
I finished it:
You can kind of see the cold air intake we fashioned with parking lot signs found in the garbage lol keeps the air 20 degrees cooler (measured with a digital thermometer)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/DSCN0121-1.jpg
Pretty much cut the edges to fit my headlights (the projectors stick out farther into the grill than the stock headlights apparently). Then to mount it to the car, took a stock legacy grill and cut the top panels off that hold it to the car. Screwed those to the wrx grill and bingo!

What roof rack is that?
Rubie_25GT
02-06-2012, 09:41 PM
Its a $50 walmart roof rack I modified with home depot square metal rods (another $15).
I cut and welded the side rails to shorten the basket height. Then I just screwed straps down under the gutter strip a typical roof rack would latch onto (because the latch was in the way of the window when shutting the door :smt011 ). When I take the roof rack off, I tuck the straps under the rubber waterproofing around the windows.
It was all measure to fit only a legacy sedan roof.
I've hauled 10ft long PVC pipes, snowboards, and bags without a problem

Nice. It looks good. I was browsing Yakima for roof racks and it appears that its impossible to spend less than 500$ for one :smt012
Rubie_25GT
02-06-2012, 10:00 PM
yeah I was doing the same thing until I just gave up and wanted to make a fun project out of it. Next move will be to make thule or yakima towers and latches permanently attached to the basket and spaced to fit just a lgt sedan. But I've wondered how the latches clear our windows without us shutting the door and SMASSHH. The walmart ones were generally the same idea.

Here is another shoot I did with my uncle (the 1988 944s Porsche) and my friend (the 1991 Acura Legend) after he fitted acura TL rims and an aftermarket suspension we pulled at a junkyard on another legend for $80 (is an $800 setup  )

Now that I have taken a second glance at my old snowflakes, I'm feeling they could use some love. Thinking of trying out a new style. I figure if I don't like it, I'll just paint them silver again. Here are just some ideas. The original color is the top. Let me know what you guys think would look good.

Update:
Just got my Replica UEL headers in today FINALLY. Got wrap and high temp header paint ready to go tomorrow hopefully.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/DSCN0176-1.jpg
Also helped Hinyo start with his Stromung high flow cat installation. Of course we ran into just a single stubborn O2 sensor that is about to get it's face ripped right off the stock cat's tomorrow :smt018 Had to also widen the diameter of the plug he got from Advance Auto to fit the O2 sensor. Bought two of them to double stack and give some distance for the sensor.

We've been going to the Rt 1 Crazy Rays near Columbia and the Mt Airy Crazy Rays most of the time. Been to some others around Baltimore and have picked up some cool stuff here and there. Got my exhaust, some intake pipes, hoods, RS hood scoop and vents around those yards :smt023

Had a pretty productive weekend with my UEL header install.

You were not at my house... better fix that next time looks like.
oh yeah clip and pics will be up tmrw hopefully. Just fought with a head stud that did not want to go in and won the fight. Still the clip won't do it justice. Sounds so clean until you get on it. Thats when it turns into a SUBARU.
I vote 98legwag digs up some single port UEL headers somehow. Who's with me so we can make him do it? :smt016

Update:
Just replaced my knock sensor after the car decided to go into limp mode :smt018 10 minute fix.. wish everything was like that.
going to possibly redo the hood a bit. might get the whole car painted black instead of the black granite pearl it already is (and get the hood painted to match if I dont decide to get it matte black again).
Any thoughts on the hood? My original plan was to just go with matte black again with a slight clear coat while the hood scoop and vents are gloss black to match the car.

Was just goofing off this afternoon and decided to mess with an intake and drive around hoodless in my friend Hinyo's 1998 legacy GT :smt023 We shot a video of his Forester Weapon R Intake pipe on with a Spectre filter. He had his Borla catback off of an impreza on at one point but took it off because of daily driving noise. Otherwise it would have been LOOUUDD in the video :smt020

I got some ideas for just getting the snow flakes to look good for the time being. Going to go for a clear coated bright white with black lug buts. Also considering 6 mm spacers to pad out the wheels a bit. Might do less if I will find the wheels will rub when I do measurements.
I had PVC pipe I had just hauled home from home depot for an art project when I decided to take some pictures :smt023

White flakes with black lugs look really good.. its the lugs that help the overall appeal.
That rear stance is very nice... Thats a big muffler tip!

Yeah the tip is borderline melon shooter size almost haha I might cut it off and put a different tip on with a rounded end. Plus I will go through with the paint on the snowflakes in may.

but UPDATE! I recently just wired up power mode for Rubie. DEFINITELY an improvement!! I wired up a switch to turn on power mode when I want to use it. It holds gears way longer and doesn't take forever searching through gears when I want to get up and go. I WOULD suggest this mod to ANYONE with a legacy 99 and under with the 4eat! Makes it bearable to have an auto-tragic. An absolutely easy mod to perform and is harmless to the car :smt023

Got an MSD coil for a Dodge Neon running my spark now after seeing 98legwag's success with it

...And last but not least, my 17" MB Seven X wheels I just bought. Waiting to get some rubber wrapped on these bad boys.

Still waiting on pics of your new goodies! Including your freaking amazing junkyard find!
Rubie_25GT
06-13-2012, 02:58 AM
Alright so 98legwag is right. I have more goodies!
Decided to go with Goodyear Eagle GT's for the MB Seven X rims. Awesome tires so far! grip like crazy in the rain!
I however had some substantial wheel rub in the back since the tires (which are 225-45/R17's) have mad tire wall on the wheels, making them go from 7" wide to 9" wide  Got the rear fenders trimmed and pulled just a hair. Now they clear pretty good but still will rub a tad if I go too fast over bumps with about 2 full grown people in the back
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/greatfrontviewcopy-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/greatbackviewcopy-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/06/nicewheelscopy-1.jpg
The best part of the goodies I mentioned, however, started with a little blue 2003 wrx I found in the junkyard. Whole thing had been rolled and stripped....
except for a bundle of goodness, a complete Perrin rear sway bar set up for roughly $40
It included a Perrin 22mm 3 hole adjustable rear sway bar, Perrin mounts, Perrin endlinks (with only 4 bushings so I crafted 4 more out of shop mat I had lying around), and some hardware. Then I purchased Energy Suspension bushings from a local auto parts shop.
Now as you all know, impreza sway bars don't swap over to legacy's right? Well I begged to differ when I saw how close it was to fitting. Sooo, got a hold of a saw and cut a section of the tire well away that was just merely for "support" or whatever... :smt023 Front sway bar is still stock, so Now the rear sway is larger than the front, giving it over-steer instead of under-steer. Also, the back end will break loose on wet ground if whipped pretty good, even with new tires.. teeheehee

Thanks man! I'm still debating whether I should get a bigger front sway bar or not now since I kind of like the back end whip when it rains out haha
I would definitely suggest messing with the rear sway bar first. Even a 20mm stock wrx sway bar would be crazy over the 17.5mm outback rear sway bar

Thats what I was wondering too!! But im not sure if it would add rumble or rasp?
Rubie_25GT
08-31-2012, 04:39 PM
Definitely added rumble and some nice little popping from high rev's. "becauseracecar"
It did improve the torque quite a bit in higher rpm's. Off the line is slightly noticeable, but on the high way or open road you can feel way more pull and grumble. The Power Mode switch is more effective with getting on the high way now. got to 100mph the other day quicker and with ease which is a feat with a 2nd ten legacy gt haha Definitely worth it to do this mod. Just hollow out the stock second cat you have on chrish8r, if you have my same O2 sensor set up. Peek under there one day and look for the sensors. The second cat on my car was literally worthless...

I think its because you used the wrx rear sway bar mount so all you had to do was cut a piece of that section. When I installed the wrx perrin rear anti sway on mine, I used the stock legacy bar mount and I had to bang the shit out of the rear tire well section.

So It has been a while since I have updated anything on here so I will do so now! This will pretty picture heavy.
First, I got a GC strut brace from Huffer and painted it.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/120928_0002_zps0199a4f6-1.jpg
Then I went ahead and got some Hella 500FF's to replace my cheap yellow fogs. Got some KC yellow covers which actually helped out with shooting through fog. I went to The Agile Automotive toys For Tots meet recently with 98legwag, Hinyo, and few other members and friends. Some pictures out of the butt loads I have on my camera and need to go through.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_0118_zps0e3dae83-1.jpg
Also got a Tsudo N1 cutback after fighting with my stock crappy rusted mid pipe. Did some welding and chopping with the help of my uncle. Sounds like a WRX! Will get a sound clip up soon enough. Now I have UEL headers, 1 cat/ the other is hollowed out, and a 2.75 inch catback (actually has a bit more power and a bit better MPG from what I've been noticing so far. Power mode pulls harder than it used to also).

Ended up getting 98legwag's old fogs when he put on his JDM ones. I then decided they needed to be molested and chopped up for another project I have thought about for a while. Making some homemade GT-B style fogs! Projectors and side fogs!
started off by sticking them in the oven for a little bit on 210 degrees F

Alright alright, once again it's been a while. I have an update on my interior, brakes, and some special goodies I hope to put on my car come spring.
I got all leather seats from both 98legwag and the junkyard.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/backseatleather_zps90cc3db1-1.jpg
Also, got an entire '02 WRX braking system (front and rear calipers, pads, rotors, lines) for $70 with about 60,000 miles on it. Stops on a dime!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/Brakesontallshot_zps4415e71e-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/wrxfrontbrakes_zpsf1972065-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/Rubiebrakejob_zpsb7fdb01d-1.jpg
One of the front caliper brackets had two bolt splines that had been stripped and they put in standard inserts instead of metric (changed it to a 7/16). So I had to go out and get bolts from pep boys. Got them cut and the edges shaved by my uncle, who I trusted to do because his craft skills surpass mine by a good bit :smt023

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/boltshavedbrakes_zps89b47d1c-1.jpg
I also have already had this for a while, but forgot to post it. I have speakers in the rear doors as well as the fronts thanks to grabbing the plastic speaker covers from a wagon. Cut the whole for the speaker and put the covers on. Looks almost factory and the sound distribution in the car sounds like a concert.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/reardoorspeakers_zpsb44f0bc0-1.jpg
Finally my special bit that I can't wait to put on my car came in the mail today from New Jersey. Got Eibach pro kit springs for a 2004 WRX brand new in the box for $180 shipped  I've been having wheel rubbing issues in the wheel well and the front fender edges since I put on 225/45 17 tires paired with my 13 year old stock GT suspension and really want to keep the tires. SO, I will be doing some fender rolling and some cutting come spring time or even before depending on if I have time. Also, planning on converting my old snowflakes to winter wheels when I can poop out another gold brick to get tires for them

Yeah at first I thought the brakes would be crappy, but so far they work great! first time feather the brakes a little bit I nearly hit my head on the steering wheel. Though now I'm running estimations on how low the car will go from the 04-07 WRX Eibach springs paired with 04-07 WRX KYB GR2's. I photoshopped a before and after prediction.
Before:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/stock_zps95d92806-1.jpg
After (from what I've seen on other legacies...):
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/01/LowerEibach_zps6e7905c4-1.jpg
This is mostly an estimation based on httrdd's setup since it was the same as what I'm doing.
Plus might be getting wagon top hats so the back might be different.

I've been busy for a while and going through a lot of debate on what would come next for Rubie. Got the suspension on finally and discovered that the 225/45r17 Goodyear Eagle GT tires rub on the fenders. I am going to down grade to 205/45r17 and hopefully end up keeping my MB Seven X rims in the end. They have a 42mm offset so the rim themselves tuck, but I need the tires to do so as well :smt011 I bought rear camber bolts and got it aligned since the WRX KYB GR2's and Eibach's gave me more positive rear camber.
It dropped about 1.2 in the front and 1.17 in the back. It is a smooth ride and turns like a demon even on snowflakes with bald Michelins

So looking at Yokohama AVID ENVigor tires in 205/45-17. Hopefully it will clear with my 17x7 +42mm offset rims. Tested out 205/50-17 michelins and they were just barely hugged by the rear fender lip. Will have pictures up soon.

So I threw on the test tire on one of my rims. MB Seven X (17x7 +42mm offset) with my friend's old Michelin 205/50-17 tires (tread width 7.5 inches). They just BARELY tucked in there. My left fender is rolled out a bit more than the right I discovered... Also that little ding is not from rolling the fenders... not sure where it came from.

Let me know if you still have problems with the 205/45 set up. I'm currently doing 225/50's and I need to throw something else at it. My neighbor has some 205/45 Pirelli's that are basically brand new that I can get pretty darn cheap...hopefully that is enough to not rub!

Alright finally got to a point where I think it is appropriate to post again. I bought Kumho Ecsta 4X all season tires for my 17x7 42mm offset MB Seven X wheels of which I have just primed and plastidipped white. Just went on a trip to Otis, MA and the car ran great going up there and all around there. Had just replaced inner/outer steering tie rods, changed the oil, put on some homemade mud flaps and more... Then on the way back, Rubie decided to blow a radiator (or atleast thats what it looks like). I got stuck in New Jersey for 5 hours before I could something out with getting my car back to Maryland. I got a tow to a random shop, then my insurance covered a tow to a Firestone where I left her for the night. Just picked her up today from New Jersey and brought her home. The Battery had suddenly died sitting up there so we are investigating that, as well as the overheating and shooting coolant around issue, currently. Not showing signs of a headgasket and it has full compression.

Update!
I only broke a radiator hose. It was such a small hole that created a huge problem. Got new upper and lower hoses and it runs great now.
Rubie_25GT
07-08-2013, 04:47 PM
After replacing the upper radiator hose, the car was back to normal. Sadly, "Normal" in my case is having strange hesitations after starting the car and moving. I would start to go up the street and it would bog down mostly while in second and sometimes firsts gear for about 5 seconds. Then, it will start to haul beans like it just hit some kind of imaginary boost...The car bogs down to around 100 rpm and just bounces, but refuses to stall out. It doesn't matter if the car was driven 5 minutes before starting it back up again. I've noticed it happen a bunch of times while just coasting in reverse, too. It feels like the computer is re-learning to compensate for something, but there is not check engine light and I just did a knock sensor, fuel filter, and cleaned the MAF.
I'm down to looking at replacing the MAF, cleaning the throttle body, and possibly replacing an O2 sensor or something... I will try to read for any codes regardless and see if there is any clues... Other than that, the car still moves and drives normal, aside from it's spastic hesitation moments, which don't happen any farther than 100 feet at most from where I drive from.
On the lighter side, the car looks great after my New Jersey issue and Managed to get a great night shot with a friend:

I have been sick of having to use a prop rod since I have almost had the hood break my neck a few times. So, the solution is a Porsche 944 aftermarket Hood Strut (Just one) and a custom made bracket from Aluminum. I will post a DIY if enough people really want the specs on how to make it. I have to take it off and paint it anyways so I will take measurements. This whole thing should be at most $50 or less.
You may have to trim the rubber along the front of the car that channels water around the engine bay just a tad to get the hood to close far enough because the metal bracket pushes against it. Either way it works perfectly.

So it has been a while since I have posted anything up. Rubie was throwing her little Legacy fits with overheating and stuff. I found my radiator bleeder cap messed up, bought a new one, and so far it seems to be holding up fine and she runs great. I came across a 91 Integra at the junkyard with a stock lip on the front and decided to test fit it to my bumper. It doesn't look too bad for a chin extension.

She has 125,000 miles and needs a new front bumper because it is cracks. Other than that, she runs like a hovercraft, nice and quiet. Love this car and will be sad when it goes.

Alright so here is an update on my car for a change since I've been busy. I recently started having overheating problems and had to replace the water pump about 50k miles early because it was leaking. After replacing it, I still have had overheating problems with water getting forced out of the over flow. Bubbles are seen in the over flow with a slight smell of exhaust gases in the radiator too. So I believe I may have a head gasket issue. Engine may be pulled and taken to a shop to do it for me while I fix other stuff on the car in the meantime since there will be no engine in it :smt023
Also, I sold "Fat Stacey" the 1996 SVX because of a large offer of money made for her. Miss that car still to this day, but it had to be done.

Buy the Cometic gasket kit for the EJ25D and take the heads to a good machine shop. There is a good one local to me that does a good bit of headwork for the local Subaru dealership. The repair itself is not hard if you take your time and do it right. The minimum that should be done to the heads is to get them pressure tested for cracks and checked to see if they are warped. If they are not warped have them surfaced so you have a good mating surface for the HGs. Price wise, the gasket set will run you anywhere from 200-350 bucks and the timing belt kit will run about 200 bucks if you don't get a water pump. I would suggest a Gates kit just because the make the oem timing parts for Subaru. It cost around 180-200 bucks iirc for my heads to be done at the machine shop.

Good man! I will never put anything but a Gates timing kit on the Subies I work on. Just make sure to mark the timing marks and line everything up before you tear it down. The original markings on the belt wear off rather quickly. Also, for taking the cam gears off you will need an old timing belt and a pair of vice grips to lock the gear in place. If you need one I have a couple lying around.

Yeah I have a gates belt on Subaru original everything else for the timing and water pump. Just replaced the advance auto radiator cap in hopes it was the problem, pushing coolant out into the overflow excessively. So now I am driving her around and so far so good. Compression is fine on her and finally got to hand wash her after 4 months. Probably one of the best feelings for a car enthusiast :smt023
Tough now I have to fix a leaking hella foglight that fills with water, my broken hood strut mount, the stained white plastidipped wheels, and some other little things here and there. Spring time will be a busy time.

The wiring part looks way more intimidating in writing than it actually is when you get into it. I seriously spend twice as much time looking at the wiring diagrams than I did actually looking at the car the day I was doing the wiring part.

Ah that's even better news. Though I have to ask is the wiring the same between the 99 GT automatic and the 99 L manual? Will the plugs on the trans plug in?

I am pretty sure that the trans you got is a phase 2 5 speed and it has the 3 pin speedo sensor. Check to make sure that you have a 3 pin VSS before you but the trans in the car cause its a really pain to get the new style vss out because its plastic.

It has been a long time, but now I feel I must update this build. I have successfully swapped in a 1999 Legacy L Manual 5 speed w/ cable clutch into my 1999 GT. It has driven to MA from MD and back successfully and got great gas mileage. It runs strong and pulls like a beast compared to the 4EAT lump it had in it before :smt023
Here are some pics of Hinyo, 98legwag, my uncle, and I putting the engine and everything back in before test day:

Thanks all! She has been running good and getting me everywhere I need to go. Now I have to figure out how to get rid of this CEL for a Neutral Safety Switch that doesn't exist. Some wiring I did from referencing other people that did the 5-speed swap did work in wiring up the switch.
In other news, I recently installed JDM side marker lights! They are wired up as running lights for now, but I will make them into turn signals with a relay later on.Here are some pictures:

So it has been a long time since I posted on my build. I have been busy fixing things on the car after this winter and still am.
List of things done over the past 2-3 months:
Kartboy Short throw shifter
black crown royal shift boot
new Borla Unequal Length headers
repaired my hood strut
put my stock LGT fogs back on while I fix the custom ones
Grimmspeed Brake Master Cylinder Brace

Also, installed a Porsche Script seat for the driver's seat:

and a short instagram video of some fun in the snow. Didn't get much filming in this year because I did a lot of driving instead haha. But the rear LSD really enhanced the driving experience this past winter:

Well quite a few things have happened since my last post. I had to clean up my rims and painted them white (instead of re-plastidipping them). Also, I got my hands on a 1998 Acura Integra BYS front bumper lip. With some coaxing, it went right on. Looks almost like a stock lip for the car. I also fixed up my hood strut.

However, on Sunday night (a week before Boxerfest), I hit some strange chunk of metal while driving home on the highway. it tore up my under carriage and punctures a hole in my gas tank. I had to take the car to a shop to get the tank replaced under my insurance.

Also there is a video I took of the damage... hopefully all of you can see it on Facebook:

Thank you sir! It has had a lot done with it since then for sure! Truth be told, if it wasn't for the last Maryland SL-i meet it never would have been manual swapped.

I have repaired and put the roof basket back on! Added a tool box onto it as well. (better pics will come)

Just another shot of my car lately:

I recently filmed the first Canned Food Drive hosted by the Maryland Subaru Club at Used JDM Engines, Inc. We ended up raising more than double what was hoped for. Also, the JDM importing place we were at had a new Forester Turbo Diesel front clip with engine and trans! I drooled pretty hard.

The Corvette Club of America hosted the AutoX event I was at. I think their last one was a few weekends ago. The BMW club have one at the Bowie Bay Sox stadium lot, idk when their's is.
