I don't know if there are any laws, as long as it's readable. Don't hold me to that though.

It may be that the colors reserved for emergency vehicles (mainly red and blue) are illegal, but cool white (with a bluish tint) should be fine.

I wanted to get red to match the rest of my interior lighting but the emergency vehicles thing is making me second guess...

Uh I have been pulled over in CA for my license plate illumination light being off white instead of bright white.

I am pretty sure this was just an excuse to pull me over but the reason why I was pulled over nonetheless.

I need to find in the law book if it says anything because siting where my stuff is legal is the biggest F you to a cop.

I have the exact list of laws in my glove box in case cops every pull me over for my fogs on the front. I can prove they are completely legal. I use that book for all of my mods. I didn't print the entire thing because it's the ridiculous amount of pages, but I printed the relevant stuff. That's how I know the basic laws off the top of my head.

If you want to be a real smart ass, also print out a cover sheet with a QR code that goes right to the DOT website. They love that.

Stick with white. Anything else will probably not look all that good and get you hassled.

As cool as having other color would be, leave those lights alone...

The legal colors change depending on where you live, but I got some "white" LED license plate lights when one of my old ones burnt out off ebay. They are much bluer than white but I've had no trouble with the law. Looks Euro yO!

Google "(Your State) vehicle code". I got to the DMV website and then eventually got to a "forms and publications" part that led me to the vehicle code. In my state:

321.388 Illuminating plates.
Either the rear lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from blah, blah, blah...

White is the color for IA!
