no...i'm not complaning about gas mileage, it's been steady 17.5 since i bought the car even after i put big tires on it.
my question is, however, my car runs rich. i can smell the gas when the car is idling.
ideas on that?
Also, my #4 cyl. is leaking oil and burning on the plug. i go through about 1.5 - 2 qts of oil in 3000K miles. no MAJOR smoke (dissapates within 3 feet of exhaust when heavily accelorating) and no major external leaks. i've never seen a drip on the ground.
Ideas?

hmm, you may want to check and clean your mass airflow sensor, and um maybe replace you o2 sensors
are there any check engine lights?
There are lots of things that can contribute to this. bad coolant temp sensor will leave the car in closed loop also dumping excess fuel down. Also if your getting oil in the sparkplug then that is probably why you smell gas, it is probably someone fouling your plug so its not burning all of the gas in that cylinder also causing your decreased fuel mileage.
pull the valve cover and replace the gasket. can probably get one faily cheap and its not all that hard to do. How does your coolant look? milky at all? could also be a failing head gasket.
Need mroe information about it really to give an accurate diagnosis.
My car runs rich because I have the rear o2 sensor disconected and I still average 22mpg city and 28-30 on the highway
heck I was doin 90mph all the way to philly to the SEMA show and I still got 29 mpg

17 is horrible. 21 is the lowest I've ever gotten.
As far as the richness...is this when the car is cold? Because it's supposed to run rich when cold. That's when most people notice it.

Is 17 the corrected value after your tires? The bigger tires will make it look like you've traveled less miles over all, when you in fact have gone a good distance.

17 is horrible??? Thats my average.. although I drive it kinda "hard" I guess, to make up for lack of power.

i thought it was bad to touch the mass air sensor...how should i go about cleaning it?
no CEL...never has been
the thermostat has been replaced...probably about 2 years ago
is there a step-by-step on the gasket replacement?
the coolant looks like coolant. the only leaks are oil. no tranny, no coolant.

Heck, i get upset when I get under 25mpg...
As for cleaning the MAF, take it out, fill a ziplock bag with brake cleaner and immerse the MAF in said cleaner.

ok, i just talked to my buddy thats a certified mechanic (one of the best in the area) and he said that if the gaskets leaking then the oil can't reach the head. to replacing a gasket won't fix anything.. maybe i'll take a picture of my plug and see so you what it looks like...maybe it's not oil at all

For your MAF look here:

I don't know about the brake cleaner. I'm not sure how that stuff affects plastic.

If you find out what the problem is let me know I have a similar problem my car runs a little rich and I still get good mileage like about 22 or 23 but no check lights and no oil leak

UPDATE::
ok, just filled the tank with 220 miles on the trip-odo
adjusted for tires at 12% is about 246 miles
at 11.5 gallons of fuel
i got about 21.4 mpg.
HOWEVER - the majority (over half) was highway driving.)
i shouldn't have any need for (abnormal) highway driving this week so we'll see what my "city" driving mpg is.
