At the moment, I have two readily available suspension options. One is a brand new set of KYB GR-2s which would be matched to my 200k mile stock Outback springs. The other option is a set of 110k mile Forester XT struts and springs. What would you do?

My struts are beyond blown at the moment, but I'm curious if the springs tend to wear in a similar fashion as the dampers do? Would matching new struts with old springs make any sense or would I be better off with the whole Fozzy set up even if the springs are half as old as my current ones?

Forester XT was basically a raised 2004 sti in terms of suspension. It would offer you both a 1"-1 1/2" lift, as well as increased spring and damping rates. I have regular forester suspension on my legacy, and I love it for daily driving, but I sometimes wish I had something just a little bit stiffer in the corners to resist the body roll.

That being said, price becomes a factor in these decisions, so what are you looking to spend?

I just installed KYB GR-2's on the rear of my car with stock springs. And wow, did they make a difference over the 180k stock struts. Much less body roll, quicker rebound response, and a generally much stiffer rear end. I can't wait to put the fronts on.

The FXT option would be very good as well, and it's something I looked into. The benefit there is that you gain the ability to run aftermarket Forester springs that will keep the Outback's ride height. Swift Sport springs are a good one that I know of.
