Subaru Legacy 96 2.2 Swap to a 1996 legacy 2.5?

Hi, I'm very very interested in this 1996 legacy near me it has a blown rod 2.2, Would my 1996 2.5 out of my Outback swap in? what would need to be done? It's looks to be in great shape. And If it works out i so can't wait! And if that was to work out, I'll be parting out my Outback!

I understand my ECU, May need to be swaped in. Are all the plugs and wiring the same?

Both are auto, Both 96's. Need anymore info to let me know if this will work.

don't need to change anything, everything just plugs in. You want a 25d ecu from a 97-98 (99 prob works also).

You also want a 2.5 from 97 to 99, They have a bit more power.

Are they both automatic?
If so, then nothing needs to be changed except the ECU, which is needed as it has a higher redline & more aggressive fuel map than the 2.2 ECU.
However, the 96 25D is an oddball as it needs to be run on 91 or better octane & delivers it's peak TQ a lot lower than the 97-99 variants.
You will want to avoid the 96 25D unless you want high octane & nice low-end TQ.

If the replacement engine is from a manual car & it's going into another manual car, it will swap in & plug up with no problems.

If you want low-end TQ (like 140ft-lbs @ 2800rpm), install a 96 25D as it will make being in traffic a lot easier.
If you want a smoother midrange pull, install 97-99 25D.
At this point, it's all about what you really want since the engine will swap right in.

Yes. Use your 99 wiring harness if the 96 harness doesn't cut it. It will literally just drop right in and bolt up. It will also be able to run in 87 octane because of the 99 ECU being advanced enough to compensate for any slight changes from it's original '99 25D.

I was following you up to the last part. You know way more than me and I've read alot of your posts. Thank you for the time you take to share. I should have been more clear. I have a 99BK L. So the phase 2 ej22. Will that wiring harness work with the 9625D? And if I set it up to run on less than 91 will it lose the low end torque or actually keep torque and be more efficient? Thank you. Ill be asking you lots of questions I see your the motor guy. I want to keep the stock ej22 in there as long as possible. Stock other than ignition and breathing. Just for efficiency. It only has around 550 miles on a brand new rebuild. When its time for like 180 hp I want to go with the 9625D. Or build one of those Sohc 2.5 you detailed in the motor section. Thank you.
