Well it looks like it's time for my old LGT to get new trans. I got a 98 wagon with just about 170,000 on it. The center diff is starting to bind after long trips and it's getting super notchy. It's got brand new tires, new-ish synthetic gear lube, and an aliment in the last 6 months. I do use the thing more like a 3/4 ton truck and I tend to drive a bit on the "spirited" side.

I've diggin around the web but I can't find much info, but I'd like to swap in a new (to me) trans. BUT everything I can find around here (St. Cloud, MN) in a phase 1 has the same if not more miles on it. I don't really wanna go through all that work just to have the same issues again. So I'm thinking about going with something out of a phase 2.

Questions...
1: Is there any phase 2's with the same 4.11 final drive?

B: I know the front axles will interchange, but is there any that won't (rear drive shaft, shifter linkage, ect.)?

Now I only have about $500 to spend. What do you think? Junk yard phase 2, junk yard phase 1, or just deal with the notchyness and put a center diff it what it have?

Thanks for looking

When I'm not posting from my phone I can go inoto more detail but just swap sensors and tap threads for one of the starter bolts

Ok back to my office, I thought I did a write up on this one but not finding it. I do have pics on my computer at home. Anyways I had to tap threads into the trans since the newer 5mt has the eight bolt holes there is one stud on the trans for the starter and the second starter bolt on a pahse I threads into the trans but that second bolt threads into the block on a phase II engine. I can get some pics later and that will will reduce confusion alot. Here's some charts on final drives for manual trans, one thing is charts say '01 & '02 Outbacks are 3.9 final drive but I believe they are actually 4.11, I have a BH and googled the trans code and came up 4.11.

I guess I only have one good pic, this is a 5mt from a '00 rs. Don't pay attention to the thread tap, I was cleaning out the threads for the slave cylinder. I'll get some more pics of it in my car and that will jog my memory of what all I had to do, then I'll write a diy so all can see.

Good info Bookem.

So lets sum this up:

1) Phase 2 from a 00-04' LGT will bolt in.
2) Everything in this thread applies to going forward and back Phase I / II viewtopic.php?f=70&t=22075 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=22075)

That being said I personally do not like the Phase II 5MT's except for the sweet linkage update (BE/GD)

That being said its a gamble with any used transmission... Replacing the center diff is no easy task and further inspection could lead to a major overhaul.

Sweet Thanks! that PDF came in super handy! I found a 04 Forester 5mt with only 58K on it! It's alittle of my budget but I'm gonna see if I can haggle a bit.

Are you looking to get rid of your old trans ? My brother lives in Clearwater so I'm over by you once in a while.
