Back in the housing bubble my family lost our home and had to live in a one room place for a while. Well, we finally got a loan from a generous aunt of mine and it got us into an apartment, the problem for me being is that my job was suddenly 10 miles away rather than the 3 which I was walking from the temporary house. I had been saving up money as much as I could during this time without a real home and went to go see about half a dozen cars.

I saw a mid 90's Chevy Cavelier for $600 bucks. Well, I sat in the driver's seat and ended up in the back seat (the seat was held onto the floor with cable ties which broke with my body weight). Then I went to see a mid 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee which the junk yard would not part with for less than $2000 and I could not secure a loan because the car was more than 5 years old. I kept looking on craigslist, because the newspaper and the AutoFocus magazines were out of my price range. I ended up looking at a mid 90's F150 Extended Cab with dual gas tanks, but the ownder refused to go down $100 which would have allowed me to purchase that. Next came this 1996 Subaru Legacy Wagon L that was posted on Craigslist for $1250 and I had about $1400 saved up by that time.

I took the Subaru for a test drive, I had never heard of Subaru before, but I liked the AWD which I was looking for in the F150 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I also found out the mileage was great too, which is what I was looking for in the Cavalier. The car needed a headlight so the dealer dropped off $20 and sent me on my way to get insurance and a light bulb. When I got back the car didn't start! My heart sank, because I had just signed the paperwork and given them my cash... luckily they came out and cleaned the battery terminals and I was on my way.

Within a couple months my battery died, and I replaced it only to have the new battery die as well. I got a new alternator because I found out that was what had killed the old battery, then exchanged the newly dead battery for a newly charged one and was on my way again. The only real mod needed from the alternator was to file the hole on the ground connection gromet to make it big enough to fit the screw through it. Next came the realization that although I had good bulbs in the tail light boot, the brake lights were not coming on when I stopped! Well, luckily someone who knows a lot about working on cars was able to jump 2 of my fuses together to make the ground work on that (pulled 2 fuses and put a wire between them to connect the circuits), that 'temporary fix' has been there for about 2 years now. I would like to get new wiring for this, but I'm guessing the easiest way to go about this is to find someone who is parting out a 94-99 SUbaru Wagon so I can pick the wiring harnesses up off of them from the tail light bar all the way up to the battery. I also noticed that my radio and blower motor were connected to this 'dead circuit' that was jumped to make the circuit work. I may need harnesses for that as well?

While at the gym my car got blindsided and I didn't see it until I got out, and here is a current picture of that (the gym actually closed down within the past couple of years, so that ended up being the last time I ever went there). Ended up having to drill holes in the door to pull it out so I could roll my window up and down. I still have yet to replace this.
--pic yet to be uploaded--

While exiting a freeway ramp I ended up drifting around a dog which had run out in front of me unexpectedly, and I drifted safely to the side of it, however a nice wall and curb combination appeared so I had to drift back the other way before I could finish my original drift and then just barely missed pulling off the drift in the other direction, however I ended up nailing the curb at 60-70 mph and jumping the curb, which instantly blew both of my left tires, and ended up rolling another couple hundred yards, turning once to avoid a tree, and eventually stopping against the fence that prevented me from falling about 100 feet back onto the freeway. That is about the time I began to truly love my Subaru, because I came to the realization that any of the other cars I had owned up to that point would have rolled under those circumstances. Also, after a moment (and I saw my car steaming which startled me a little bit) I was able to reverse the car and limp it to the other curb where I ended up having it towed because I could not get a tow truck there before the police came (which ran me a couple hundred for the towing and another $500 for the undercar work to get the wheels to sit normally again).

Another random thing that happened was that my front right headlight stopped working. I replaced the bulb, still nothing... so a friend of mine ended up finding out that some of my wiring looked like it had been eaten through under the car and spliced some wiring from a Manza he had laying around in his backyard from the headlight assembly back to the part of the wiring that had beat eaten through. Later I started losing antifreeze in large quanities which lead to me getting a new radiator. While I had the radiator out we painted the fans and fan shrounds on the radiator.

We also painted the serpentine belt guards a nice blue (outside of car is currently blue and rust, so it matches). Then when installing the new radiator came the realization that the original bracket would no longer hold the radiator since the new one was taller than the old one, which caused the custom fabrication (from sheet metal) of the black metal flake bracket shown here.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/96LegacyWagon/257051_10150211049733616_502073615_7332860_7010896_o.jpg

The car started 'pissing oil' every time I started it or let it run, so I asked my friend to take a look underhood with the car on a jack while I started and turned it off. She noticed that it was coming from the valve cover and so began the journey of what was a valve cover gasket replacement. On the way home from her place I had trouble with my steering, being as if I had my foot on the accelerator I needed to take my foot off the gas whenever I needed to turn (which meant coasting around corners, luckily there was like 2-3 inches of snow and it was late at night so the roads were baren). Turns out it was both tie rod ends AND ball joints! I got replacement parts for both of those and now I am waiting for my day off (which ha ppens to be Friday this week) so I can get to work and replace those and be on the road again.

I also am having a few other issues with the car (one being the trunk not opening yet again, because the thing at the bottom on the inside appears to be bent or warped).

My current goal with the car is to restore it and/or mod it to my liking... and that is how I landed upon this wonderful forum. :)

PS-- I am from the metro Detroit area. Does anyone else live out this way (or at least visit from time to time)?

What a long and sad story..

I don't even know where to begin....

I have a 1995 Legacy Brighton I am going to junk next week so if you would like some wiring let me know.. I doubt you need a large portion of the harness so just send me some pics of the damage so I can help you out :-D

A common problem with these old wagons is the hatch release gets very rusted over the last decade or so.. Most of the time its as easy as making sure the handle is pushed to its resting position (usually it stays in the release position when open it) Lock your doors.. Then unlock your doors and then open the hatch..

I feel for you..

Welcome to SLi buddy.

I will be working on the driver's wheel today (its 230am, so not for another 8-10 hrs probably), but as I am out there I will take a ton of pics and upload them to the photo bucket account in my tagline. As you will see, if you have a lot of no rust parts I would go as far as to ponder what it would cost me in shipping to have that thing sent over to my gf's house (I live in an apartment, so the landlord would have a fit lol), and just take it apart one piece at a time a couple times a week (and of course upload pics for people in the forum to enjoy/learn from/etc). I definitely think she needs some TLC, but she is indeed my baby (only 2 of my cars ever made that distinction -- the 87 Buick Electra T-Type, and now my 96 Lego).

Thank you in advance for all of the help you give me (whether it be information, or parts, or camaraderie, or whatever else). :smt023

Here a couple photos from under the driver's side wheel compartment.

That purple wire is the one 'borrowed' from the Manza.

Hmmm.. I can probably pull the engine bay fusebox harness and most of the cabin fusebox harness. I'll take some pics this weekend.

Try to get me more pics from the inside.

I just stumbled across this thread. The "MI" in the title caught my attention as I am also in Michigan, but the UP. I have to say your painted rad fans look sweet, I have never seen that before. I may have to paint mine too now.
I hope you get your car working again.

I got a few pictures of the driver's side earlier today just before my ride took me to work. It's not pretty, but this is my 'starting point' for whatever gets done to it. Going inside the driver's door...

As you might be able to see, the door sags a little bit and the carpet is a bit stained from being waterlogged at one point (bad seal on door maybe?)

The seat is a bit ripped on the back and my cushion (came with car when I bought it because they previous owner left it there) is spitting filling out onto the floor every time I sit on it.

The stock radio was M.I.A. when I got the car, so after a few months I put this nice thing in (USB, SD, MP3CD, sub outputs) only bad part being 160 watts instead of the 200 I usually go for, but for $90 I can't really complain, right?
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w413/96LegacyWagon/030412132338_01.jpg
And of course I have to have my car smell good, so this $1.50 clearanced set (seen in other pic as well) make that happen...

Would you like to see more when I get the chance to upload more from other angles (like from passenger front, the backseat, the trunk, etc??)?

at the driver side foot well you can remove the panelling around the dash and expose the fuse box assembly. Check that section for wiring damage.. take pics..

P.S. clean your car. :-p

Yes, have been working 40 hrs a week for the past month or so now, so this week dropping down to 27 hrs will give me a few extra hours to attempt to clean the car out. :-p This week I get Tuesday and Wednesday off which is nice since it is two back-2-back days instead of having to do a little and then wait a week, like is has been lately. :)

As for fuses, do you want a picture of the fuse box itself, or what exactly am I pulling out?

My heart goes out to you and your family. Times are tough and I think a lot of people take for granite the ownership of a vehicle. Glad that you chose a Subaru. It looks like it saved you a couple of times. I had an incident where I was driving at night and a car pulled out in front of me. If I didn't react how I did (swerved off to the right side of the road and blared my horn), I would of t-boned the car in front of me and would of totaled my legacy. I know that Chuck and a couple other people will do as much as possible to help you out.

Oh man that rust is painful to look at. The use of salt on the road is FTL imo.

Yes, part of the rebuild will be to get new doors and fenders all the way around. I am hoping many people have spare parts laying around because that will help the project a long more efficiently. I dislike the rusting part of living in Michigan, but alas I guess the way to prevent it in the future will be to keep the new doors cleaned and in good working order so water/salt can't do it's thing on them.

My subs stopped working after work today, not sure if it is because of the headlights issue or not, but I will need to look into that because they were working on the way to work. I just got a copy of the service manual online, so going to read the fuse panel to see what I can do to it in the morning before work again. It looks like I might need the wiring harness section from the fuse box to the passenger headlight.

Stuff I am thinking about (not in order)....
- Horns (want them in blue) http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/hel ... de=FROOGLE (http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/hella+horns.do?code=FROOGLE)
- Driver's seat
- Windshield
- Exhaust system from engine back to muffler
- all 4 new doors
- new front fenders
- tint other side of truck and back window
- fix trunk latch
- replace window switches that are missing
- replace center console piece for radio area
- Hidden Windshielf Antenna http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Am-Fm ... 077wt_1270 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Am-Fm-Hidden-Windshield-Antenna-Car-Radio-New-/170713650034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27bf539372#ht_2077wt_1270)
- new floor mats
- new carpets
- new seals around doors and windows
- sound material in doors (and in roof?)

Wow man, what a story! Well welcome to the forum dude, hope you can get some help here!!

And Chuck,
Clean your car?? Really......lol.

Huffer

Holy smokes... I honestly would not fix any of that... I would clean it up as much as possible, and then just save save save until you can find a better vehicle. Keep it clean (throw your trash in a trashbin, not the car!). Weld some metal onto the outside of the doors to stop water getting in...

A clean car means it's easier to identify and fix problems when they appear.

The issues you are having with the wiring are bad... my guess is that even if you track down the problems things will not be 100% solved if the harnesses have been hacked up.

Keep it alive, but put your money into something in better shape. I guarantee you have frame rust.

Okay, so the right headlight went out again. Hmm... this time the fuses are getting power, but the socket is not.

frayed 12v wires or bad ground... or the socket is just dead.

I just sent pair of front seats to the dump last weekend, too bad you're not nearby.

I ended up fixing the wiring temporarily by splicing the boot wires into new 14ga wires and running them across the front of the car (under the radiator shroud) down under the car to where there was a big rotted area in my wiring harness. Also grounded the black wire to the battery (so reg lights work, brights act weird, but at least it is legal to drive at night again). I will upload pics (probably to the 'what did you do to your car today' thread) when I get the chance to, hopefully later today or tomorrow sometime. Anyone know where I can get the wiring harness to replace the frayed one by the driver's side wheel well?

chuckthefuk

FYI the black wire (ground) can be attached to any part of the body. The battery " - " terminal has a strap that attaches to the body.
