I would check to make sure that someone didnt put some baseball cards in your wheel spokes...

You are going to need to be slightly more specific as to what conditions are present when the tick happens; the speed, location ect. It would be best if you posted a small video clip.

It ticks whenever it runs basically. Def consistently during travel on the highway. Not a noticible increase at anytime per sea. maybe slightly upon acceleration.

Lifters? When ever someone tells me their car is "ticking" I instantly think of valve lash.

I'm thinking that your engine has hydraulic lifters, which means you don't have to adjust them, but they can go bad or become stuck.

It seems like a lifter to me its only one cylindar on the drivers side. Louder on a cold start. This is my first subi so its all "foriegn" to me. Whatcan i do to fix the lifter if its gone bad?? Is there any way for me to make a more definate diagnosis?

So... I just did some reading and it looks like you don't have hydraulic lifters, 97 was the first year that they didn't use them. So if it is a valve lash problem you are going to have to pull the rocker covers and adjust them. The 2.5's have a shim bucket type and the 2.2's have solid lifters.
Once again though, don't take my word on it.

so if it is that what type of adjustment is needed?? is it ticking because of gap or because it needs to be backed off?

Do you have any oil leaks? I know it's not lash adjusters, but poor oil pressure to the valves can cause noise.

See if it's persists as bad once you have everything tightened up. My ticking was dramatically better once the car stopped leaking oil.
