I have noticed the oil consumption going up lately, over the last 2 5K changes. During the last 2500mi I have put 2.5 qts in it.
Up until yesterday I haven't noticed any visible smoke out the back, and the motor is tight, no leaks.
Yesterday when I fired it up I got smoke for about the first 3-5min of operation.
So I figure its either rings or valve guides, It still makes good power so I'm kinda leaning towards valve guides.
Is there a way to tell with out pulling the heads? Im pretty broke at the moment, and the Outback is my primary transportation so if I could get away with refurbing the heads vs a total rebuild that would be best.
I plan on pulling the plugs this weekend to look for signs of oil in a specific cylinder.
Its at 153K right now and had head gaskets and a timing set at 83K when I bought it.
Any advice on how to narrow down the issue would be greatly appreciated.
