View Full Version : Next project?

So I have a couple ideas about my next project... This will be after the Volvo is painted, the Pulsar is on the road, and some other lose ends are tied up... but these are my ideas...

Idea #1
Lifted BG/BK/BD....

When I mean lifted, I mean lifted! Looking at 4-6 inches. I'm thinking an Outback since they already have the spacer setup, so that might make it easier.
Would have:
-over sized tires
-built for flex
-steel built bumpers front and rear
-possible winch

Idea #2
2 door BD...

I know, this will be a crazy hard thing to do, but maybe not as hard as it sounds. The idea is to make it like a 2 door Impreza RS/WRX.

-Use 2 door Impreza glass and interior trim
-Cut two 2nd second gen doors to make them longer
-weld the rear doors shut and shorten them
-move B-pillar
-use front drive spendles and Rack for RWD conversion
-Motor swap of some sort... SR20DET, KA24DE, something with a RWD platform.... Maybe stick with a 2.5 n/a...

So what do you guys think? I know the lifted one would be much easier and most likely more fun, but the 2 door idea I have had in my head for a long time and I think it would be cool for sure!

I personally don't see enough lifted subies, which I think are awesome.
The 2 door would be a cool idea but why spend so much effort to make a car that practically already exists. I could see starting with a 2 door RS and doing a motor swap and RWD conversion I just don't get why go through all the work.

I vote for the lifted subie. (bonus points for a H6 swap and plow  )

Lifted BG/BK?BD has been done before, I vote 2 door BD, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Do a convertible BD! I gaurantee that's never been done (to a BD anyway).

I at one point seriously contemplated doing the 2-door BD coupe. It would be A LOT of work, but i think it is doable, and would be awesome. I've also seriously considered an SR20 swap, so you could totally combine those 2 ideas into awesomeness.

as for idea 1; you've had a real true offroad rig, and I don't think you'd ever be fully satisfied with a lifted Outback, subarus built for "serious" offroad use are a bit stupid to me, because you know full well no matter how much effort you put into it, an XJ with like 2-3" of lift and 31's will out perform is all day long.

Yamazaki, your crazy! but I like it! Only problem is I live in Seattle... only about 3 months of the year that would be nice enough to really enjoy it... That is another good idea though!

This is a valad point... After having a rock crawling Toyota truck, a Subaru would be like having a stock truck, just enough to have a little fun, but just not enough to go to the places I was used to going...

I'm still working it out in my head... I was going to build a 2 door Volvo Wagon back in the day and them I got into S13's and that idea vanished.

The lifted one would be a fun build, but the 2 door would be a challenge for sure! I know it's kinda pointless, but I still like the idea of a 2 door...

But why don't you sort of combine both your ideas and make an off-road, lifted ute?!

Awesome.

I completely agree. I thought about lifting my bk but it just would ever have the ground clearance. So I vote the two door Sr20 coversion.

Do the 2 door. But:

Take rear wagon doors and make those the front doors
Shorten the wagon chassis
flare the wheel arches

Lifted BG! Less R & D.

if you do lift it I will buy whatever you use.. i would like to lift my Outback aswell.

The body spacers wont help you out that much.. If you do change these spacers you will have to extend the steering column u-joint :-(

Have you seen a 2 door BD?
I owned 2 BD's, sexiest car ever, but when I saw a 2 door version it looked like puke.

I wanna say I saw it on this site like 5 years ago, maybe I found it on google images though. edit -CAR DOMAIN! definatly where it was

I have it saved on my facebook pics.

I love your projects dead but seriously look for this other 2 door BD, it wasnt as nice as I'd imagined... im sure you could do it better though :)

Dead91silvia
03-19-2012, 12:25 PM
Yeah, but I would be building '2door' doors. Using 2 front doors to make then the length of an Impreza 2 door. So it would still be a real 2 door conversion.... ;-)

chuckthefuk
03-19-2012, 12:39 PM
Why not use 2.5rs coupe doors? Graft the legacy handles / moldings and use the coupe rear quarter glass. The hardest part is moving the B pillar.

Dead91silvia
03-19-2012, 12:47 PM
Only problem with that is the contours are different so the fenders and the rear door/quater would be off so just extending the 2 front doors would be easier....

Or... I could used the shell of a coupe door and the skins from a Legacy.... Hmmm.... Got me thinking! That way the windows would be no problem... That could work...

i know what you guys are getting at with the doors and what not (coupe doors are typically longer than sedan front doors), but i also feel like you are opening a can of worms. i would be curious to see a chop of a legacy that was only shortened between the B and C pillars, then all you would have to do is get a custom piece of glass/lexan and you would be done.

in any case, you may want to start with a legacy that doesn't have a sunroof, it wont live through the shortening anyway...

Trust me, I've been trying to get it to work but for some reason I just cant get past log in... It's kinda pissing me off! :smt013

If they only made a 1/24th scale model car of a BD I would so do this! I might be able to do it with a BE and still get the same result though. Just the kits are damn spendy to be cutting up! haha

But yeah, If I do this, it will be to an "L" or a freaking super cheap GT. I know how it would work in my head, it's kinda like how I did my Pulsar. I knew how to do it in my head, but everything changes when you get the car in front of you, but I still figured it out.

This would be a perfect car other then I want a Manual if I do this...

BD Legacy Coupe
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9521/legacy2doorcopy.jpg

So lets sum this up:
- BD front clip
- BD A Pillar
- BD C Pillar merged with GC C Pillar
- GC B Pillar
- BD roof line
- BD (fender -> door) door merged with GC ends (door -> quarter panel)
- BD quarter panel
- BD rear clip
-
What would be needed:
- Impreza driveshaft
- Shorten brake lines / fuel lines
-

Looks pretty cool.. but then it looks like a Civic Si.. but then it looks like a bad ass Legacy! On the fence..

Hmm... This is getting really tempting...

I like that idea, that might work better then I thought. I wonder though, I wonder what it would look like with the end door line still being that of the BD? I wonder if that would be odd...?

Why would you need the Impreza driveline? I'm not thinking of making the chassis shorter, that WOULD be way too much work. If you shorten the wheel base, then the back seat would really suck balls!

chuckthefuk
03-19-2012, 09:05 PM
back seat? ..... I see we have different ideas on this subject. If you don't shorten it the overall look is weird..

hansvonaxion
03-19-2012, 09:12 PM
That looks pretty good.

Edit: misunderstood... yeah I'd like to see the BD doorline. Chuck is that shortened? Do you have an unshortened version for reference?

How about chopping the roof a little, or increasing the rake of the C-pillar? Too much work?

grayguy
03-19-2012, 10:24 PM
Don't the CG coupe and GC sedan have the exact same roof skin and wheel base? I thought the major difference was door length, and B and C pillar.

chuckthefuk
03-19-2012, 10:30 PM
Yes they do.. however the legacy is longer... so if u use the gc long doors on the legacy wheel base it will still look strange.

Yes they do.. however the legacy is longer... so if u use the gc long doors on the legacy wheel base it will still look strange.

This is why I would extend the outer skins of the BD. If I shortened the whee base, I fee that the sprite of the Legacy would be changed to a sports car instead of a luxury car.

It's like the G35... They are the same car, 2 door or 4 door, but one is a little more sporty, just with 2 less doors... See where I'm going with this...?

Ahh... but the GT's are classed as luxury cars in the insurance industry... :smt023

My point being with the G35 is the car is still the same, for the most part. It's like Civic's, Camry's, Accord's, Volvo's and others that have 2 door and 4 door versions. The wheels base is the same, but everything in the middle is a bit different. I woulnt be completely turned off to making a shorter wheel base Legacy, but that makes the work that much harder and my skill is not yet that high.
