My clutch fork went out. So, I guess it's time for me to stop procrastinating and start my turbo build that I've been slowly gathering for about a year now. Pulled out my motor and start to add more stuff into it.

Yes its hard to find 1st gen SS turbo x-member. There's alot of wrx's but I don't want a wider track since I'm on the edge on my wheel setup. Used 3/16 L and flat bar, shouldn't be a problem.
Could of went with the N/A headers and make my own up and downpipe but I want to be able to use this

IIRC the x-member is the same size just the overal height so the motor sits a bit higher.. lots of guys try to find the version 5 x-member since it sits lower.
The Control arms are what extend the track.. I had this issue when I had GC Aluminum LCA and had to switch to GD Aluminum LCA... for my 04 sti swap.

Hmmm... Thought I read it somewhere that the x-member widens the track.
Glad you brought up the aluminum control arms because I'm planning to go buy a set tomorrow. Not sure what year it came off from but he's selling it for 100 a pair. I need to do a little more research to see which aluminum LCA keeps the track the same place.
Anyways, I got the transmission in today. It was pain to install it back on with the megan mounts. A little tricky since it has less play.

my car has a GD cross member and it is normal track width. As for sitting higher, if it does, I sure can't tell, but it might. Although my hood bracing is cut for clearance...don't all legacy enthusiasts have 3 SS cross memebers squirreled away like me? haha
Also, I'm confused by your FMIC mounting, it seem to be basically sitting on the ground?
chuckthefuk
03-14-2012, 09:59 AM
FMIC looks like the brackets are going to be attached to the rebar/bumper support. As in it lifts almost a foot off the ground ...
Also if you choose the Aluminum LCA then you are going to have to switch your end links to the _|- style
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/front_end_link_removal-1.jpg
FYI make sure you get the collars or BOSS cones when you get your LCA's... the ball joint will bounce around without it.

Must of misread about the x-member then. Ha I wish I have at least one SS x-member, I can't seem to find them anywhere on my area. Its like bigfoot sighting if I do.
I havent bolted the FMIC yet, I used to see where I needed to cut the beam and such. Worst part is trying to make the piping work with the jdm fogs. Have to cut, shortened/extend all the piping and then find someone that welds aluminum.

I got the muffler installed today. Had to relocated the mounting rods from the wrx to fit the legacy. I still need to weld the midpipe with flex and converter with it.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/jdmtrunkinstalled-1.jpg
Also changed plan. I got a t3/t4 turbonetics from a friend who was gonna put it on his mr2. He ended up needing money real bad to finish up his widebody/ferarri conversion.

So it looks like I'm heading to the rotated turbo setup. Going to have to make an uppipe and downpipe and have a more intercooler piping to make it work with the turbonetics. Ordered the flanges already :smt024

What's the trim on the t3/t4?
r3v_v3ng3
03-19-2012, 05:05 PM
Its stamped .63 stage 3 on the exhaust housing
According to turbonectics http://turboneticsinc.com/forum/tech-su ... -unit.html (http://turboneticsinc.com/forum/tech-support/803-how-identify-measure-your-turbonetics-unit.html)
Its 4 inch inlet/2.5 outlet
its either a T/HP or 60 series but the minor is about 2.27 inch and 3 inch major. According to the website the closest one to my measurement 60 trim TO4E
Garrison
03-20-2012, 08:52 AM
That's going to be nice man, I know the inlet looks huge ('cause well, it is) but the cfm that thing is going to move will be sexy. And, bonus, that smaller hotside should put you into positive boost around 2200-2700rpm depending how much the headers are going to effect spool time.
I think that's going to be an awesome street turbo! Are you looking to do port work to take advantage of the increased flow potential?
r3v_v3ng3
03-22-2012, 05:18 AM
Yeah I love t3/t4's. I've put them on honda's, 240 and now the legacy. You have a spool of a t3 and power of a t4. The motor has a higher compression than stock turbo motors plus its a 2.5 so it shouldn't have that much lag. Btw I read your turbo setup awhile back and gave me idea on how to mount the turbo :smt023
Unfortunately I didn't have the money to get the head ported when I rebuilt the motor except for the gasket port match on the intake. I will probably in the future to extract more hp. I'm trying to sell the gc8 intercooler setup so that i can just make my own setup. My plan is to have the intercooler flip upside down and have the inlets more by the headlight. While means I need a taller intercooler so it can reach down and cover the bumper opening. Then use a hole saw and have the piping running though there (I'm going to reinforced the rad support). This should cut the piping down to 4-5 ft.
As for my build, I'm still waiting on my clutch components and timing cover to come so I can put the motor in and start mocking stuff. Slow progress

Broke the timing inner cover and the right exhaust cam gear when the motor slipped from my hand as me and my helper was trying to bring down the motor. so I had to wait for them to come in. Luckily Reason had a set of cam gears and shipped it right away :smt023 . Finally got it back all together. So here's my little update

Tapped oil pan and the megan motor mounts
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/tappedoilpan-1.jpg
I'm hoping to drop the motor in tomorrow so I can finally start mocking the pipings. I also dropped the oil strainer bolt in the engine as I was bolting it back :smt021 . Luckily I had this little pick to grab it out. Then I dropped it again :smt013 . But I had it out and bolted back together.
Other problem was I messed up the threads on the heads on where the EGR tube goes. I tried heating up the tube and bend it while I tighten it up but all it did was messed up the thread :smt011 . So I'll just cut the tube and extend it just like the one on the DIY section.

Finally got off my lazy ass and mounted the intercooler and piping. The challenge was to route the piping and still maintain my jdm fogs while also shorting the intercooler piping originally came for the impreza kit. I flipped the intercooler upside down and route it through the radiator support (cutting is required).
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/intercooler-1.jpg
Luckily it worked out perfect since I previously installed the wrx radiator, which is taller while the legacy is wider. So you must have a wrx radiator to route it this way.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/intercoolerdone-2.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/intercoolerleftover-2.jpg
Next stop is to create the uppipe for the downpipe for the turbo
Garrison

I think that if I ever do another turbo build with anything other than an oem turbo, I'm going to rotate it and cut even more piping out of the mix. LOVE the clean look of the install, sir. Keep it up!
r3v_v3ng3
04-12-2012, 01:07 AM
Thanks, I'll do my best. You can shorten the piping more if you flip the intake manifold. You'll loose the a/c and also have to reroute the egr or just cap it off.
I'll probably have to run on FMU for awhile to see if everything is ok. Worst part of putting all this stuff at once is trying to diagnose a problem if something goes wrong
r3v_v3ng3

FWIW, you can add the FMU before you do anything else. The only time it adds fuel is under boost, so an NA engine would never even disturb it.

So i'm guessing if I use the jdm e20g (i think, for the 25d) manifold, I would be able to do the same setup the sti's posted above. Only if the hood permits :smt017
I changed the uppipe piping to 2.5" instead of 2" and also was able to make the downpipe. I just have to make the external wastegate routing. I will update on the pics hopefully tomorrow

Ooooh, now on that I am unable to help. You should pm anothernord or lordflashheart about the manifold question, there will likely be various problems concerning the attachments (iacv, egr, etc.).
May I ask why you changed the piping diameter? Larger pipe = slower turbo spool.

Not going to go thru it, I was just wondering about the manifold.
I figured since the t3 flange is about 2.5" and the turbo manifold had a 2.5" flange shortened to 2" to the uppipe, why not make everything to 2.5" uppipe. I googled sti rotated turbo and it seems like all the manufacturer are running 2 inch uppipe. Guess I need to redo the uppipe. Thanks for pointing that out :smt023

My tuner friend told me that the intercooler I have now will only support around 250-275 hp. I want to get the slightly bigger and thicker core that supports 400-500hp but what I have is sufficient for now(tight budget). I doubt I want that kind of power on a street car. It would be nice for a future upgrade for better cooling.

Fired her up last night and checked for leaks. Had fuel leak on the fpr and fixed it. Started and surprisingly quite.
Here's still what I need to do before I can drive it.
-install walbro fuel pump
-install gauges (waiting for the gauge pod)
-wideband installed, just need to route the wires to the gauge
-I'm gonna make another cold pipe out of aluminized steel because I need 3 ports (2 for catch can and 1 for iacv). I have the big one for the bov recirc with the aluminum piping but I didn't have the two 1/2 for the catch can and 3/4 for the iacv. I still have some mendrel bend 3 inch piping to use. That way I can weld it instead of keep going over my friends shop (sort of far).
-and paint pretty much the left over aluminum high temp black
So she runs but won't be able to drive until I have the gauges hooked up to see the readings.

My guess is: Boost threshold 2500, full boost by 3200.

No sir, my turbo was waaaay too big to make any sense for the level of boost I was running. I'll be down(up?)grading to a Td05 18g

I'm guessing full boost by 3500-3600. We'll see though!
My build runs great! I miss the low end of the 2.5, but only until the VF34 spins up. ;)

Sorry haven't really updated for awhile. Been busy moving and helping family members move and get settle in the new place. My iphone home button don't work (only once in a great while). I basically troll on this site when i'm at the bathroom  lol. Also something happen to my phone to where I can't send the pics i took to my email. Damn craigslist spams must of got something from it.
Anyways the turbo was short live. Found out that the turbo needs a rebuild, it's leaking oil (bad oil seal) to the housing. Basically smokes all the time :smt011 . Can't complain since it was only 100. It will be next thing I do after I fix the 98 audi a4 (install new front struts, complete front aluminum arm kit and tie rods, also braze the oil pan since it has a small crack). I'm basically my friends/family mechanic and paint on the side. Yes my legacy has been neglected :smt022 but I'll get her back and running soon  I don't like my new neighbors (old peeps) who's accusing us of having illegal things going on since there so much cars coming in to the house. Guess they're videotaping us and taking all the plates and turning it to the police ugggghhhhh miss my old neighbors lol.
I did install the gauges and will take pics and post it up. I still have to install the walbro fuel pump

I only took a pic which was the one on the first page. I bought some L metal and just welded it. Just look at a pic of the turbo cross member and you'll get the idea on where do notch and reweld metal to it. If you have the money, I would just buy a turbo xmember. I actually made it deep enough to accommodate a 2.5 inch uppipe

Still in town (modesto not tracy). Yeah I want to meet other legacy enthusiast. I went to a local subie meet awhile back but it was mostly wrx/sti's. I don't even think they know what a legacy is lol. Actually the old neighbors were actually cool. They knew whats up and actually ask me to work on they're cars. Its the new neighbor that were having problem with.
I actually got back on this project. I'm in a process of rebuilding the turbo. Tore it down today and ordered a major turbo rebuild kit. Will post pic later. I took pics but cant send it from my phone, have to send it to my bro to send it to my email :smt013

Woah! That gauge cluster is awesome! How did you move your HVAC controls down to the spot above the radio? I was looking at it a while back so I could mount some gauges but I couldn't figure it out...

Just dismount the hvac control and reroute the cable. Took out din pocket and cut out where it mounts. I'll take a pic of it next time i remove it. Easier to explain with pics

So after I got the t3 rebuild kit, I found out that it won't fit. I guess turbonetics uses big shaft and everything is much larger than your normal t3/t4 (shaft/bearings etc.) So I have to source out the rebuild kit for that.
I think I ended up messing up the turbo its because the way I mounted it. I was just researching about how they should be mounted and they are suppose to be no more than 15 degrees. If you look on how I mounted it it was on an extreme angle (around 45 degrees). BIG F@CK!NG FAIL :smt011 :smt021
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/sidebysideuppipe-1.jpg
Side by side of the aftermarket uppipe to the one i made :smt013
You can go back a page and see how extreme the angle is. Thats why the car was smoking really bad. It probably had some oil starvation and messed up the turbo bearings and the turbonetics rebuild kit is not cheap :smt021

So back to the drawing table. Have to redo the uppipe/downpipe.
Took me hrs on how should I have the turbo mounted but eventually settled with this. I made it as flat as possible this time.

I was trying to route it just like I did before so that I can reuse the intercooler pippings but there is no way possible without removing the a/c lines which I want to keep. The turbo is also big, like almost twice as big as the stock turbos.
Bad news is I have to also re-route the intercooler piping. The cold side will be flipped to the driver side and also move the bov on that side.
The good news is that it will save me a 1.5 feet of intercooler pipe.
So pissed...........

Sweet build - makes sense the turbo got nuked, the angle will do it in no time if you see the way the channels run inside them. Least it was a cheap enough thing to break!
Love the colour, love the front winglet / canard things, never seen them on a legacy before. Good job on the FMIC install too - everyone here jams the biggest thing possible on first, and hacks the bumper to fit afterwards - this looks really smooth, paint it black and noone would know either.

Nothing really since its been my daily. I ordered the turbo rebuild kit but turns out that the turbonetics uses the big shaft and have to wait on that to buy it. I returned it back to n/a to pass smog and so far is my daily driver. My girl been driving the outback since her audi A4 is acting up. So until I get the outback for daily, I won't be able to work on turboing it.
Here is how I had the valve covers done and also put in wrx turbo subframe
had to cut a lil bit of the subframe to make room for the n/a header

Why use an N/A header (and a UEL at that)?
Wrx header = quicker spool
r3v_v3ng3
01-21-2014, 04:31 AM
I installed the turbo subframe and about a month later i had to smog it. The stock cast iron header don't work with the turbo subframe without alot of cutting so I opted of the uel which only required a bit of cutting. The car is N/A right now (my daily), until I get the outback as my daily then I won't be able to get it back to turbo. Still have to buy the big shaft turbonetics rebuild kit (waiting for my tax return  )
