Reverse Lights Inoperative- I have a 1996 Legacy Wagon (Brighton) with Manual Transmission. When I put the car into reverse, fuse #1 (15A) blows instantly and I also lose the use of the turn signals which share that circuit. When I disconnect the reverse switch at the transmission (unplug the connector B24) and replace the fuse I can regain the use of the turn signals, but of course still have no reverse lights. If I jumper out the connector with a wire to simulate the reverse switch, then the fuse blows again, also I can ohm out the R-switch and the switch works, so I know the switch itself is not the problem. There must be a short circuit downstream of the switch (towards the lights). I removed both bulbs from the two reverse lights and tried again- the fuse still blows. So I figure the short must be +12V supply leg of the circuit. Does anyone know where this wire gets routed from the engine compartment to get back to the hatchback? I have a schematic which shows a connector in this circuit, but I can't find it. One diagram has it labeled as connector B77-R3, another has B99-R3, and yet another shows B98-R2. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Has anyone else had this problem? TSW in Oregon

All of the rear wiring for the hatch goes through the left side of the car - along the left side floor, up behind the strut tower and then up the D pillar into the hatch.

It's worth noting that a vast majority of electrical systems in Subarus use a switched ground system, although I don't know the specifics of this particular one.
