so that little harmless rapping my engine kept making turned into a horrible metal on metal screech the other weekend i guess by the time i turned my car off it was to late pulled apart the block and the connecting rod bearing for cylinder #1 was shot/ gouged a nice mess into the crankshaft as well. ive been going over the options and it is possible to regrind it and put in .75mm oversized(undersized?) then replace the #1 connecting rod and all bearings, but that seems too easy. ive read that people use the phase 2 ej25 crank which has a +4mm stroke compared to the 22 i know the main and rod bearing journals are the same specs im just unsure about which connecting rods i would need to use and possibly custom pistons. i would like to use all subaru parts instead of just buying a brian crower stroker kit or something similar. so if you have stroked out your 2.2 please tell me which engines you sourced your parts from

You can do pretty much whatever you want - it's a matter of money, machinework, and time. The n/a 2.5 cranks would make it a stroker build, but then you'd need custom pistons. Here's what I'd recommend, so long as your cylinder walls are ok:
Used ej18 or phase I 2.2 crank that needs no grinding but maybe a polish
(assuming the other 3 rods are ok) 1 rod from an ej18, 2.0, 2.2, or turbo 2.5.
All new bearings in standard size.
all the gaskets, etc.
And you're done.
The other methods you mention get expensive with all the machine work needed. For example, my crank needed a grind and the most reputable shop near me wanted $135 for grinding it. So I picked up a mint used one for $60. Got 4 rods for $40 in great shape. They wanted like $100 to grind the case if I wanted to go with a phase II crank, but the one I got for $60 was a phase I so I saved there too.
For the ej25 crank idea (which needs 2.5 n/a rods to work), wiseco makes some off the shelf pistons for this build (they'd lower your CR to 8.5 from 9.7 or 10:1 or whatever yours is right now), since they are for a turbo application. Oh and they're only available over sized so you'd need your cylinders bored out too. $$$. Don't misunderstand me, you could make a totally badass block, but the cost is too damn high (to misquote that newyorker politician), lol.

My crank has the thrust bearing on number 5 I know the crank either needs a grind to get rid of the marrig or a new one so I'm just toying with the idea of turning it into a stroker build. Looking Moore for an inventory of parts, known rod lengths that work with the 2.5 crank and known pistons. I was on the wiseco site earlier and to be honest I couldn't make sense of the charts in their catalog.
So to simplify it need to know:
Proper rod lengths and whih engines to find them in so pistons don't bottom out on crank counterweights or crash into the head
Which wiseco pistons to look for on their site
Also some confirmation on someone running this setup that hasn't had any issues, how long you've had it, reliability.
I understand it's gunna cost a bit but as long as final cost isn't to much over 2000 it will keep me interested enough to follow it:D

possible update in plans, just yesterday i was talking to my friend who is possibly thinking of selling me his sti motor, at most it would include turbo, exhaust and intake, no drivetrain/trans. not wanting to go through the headache of car downtime (saving money then sourcing parts, meshing harnesses..) i was thinking of swapping crank and rods, (for that extra stroke of course) oil pump leaving me to buy wisecos .020" oversized pistons with the shorter compression height, i know all this will work and bolt right back up no problem with the 2.2 heads, compression ratio affected a little
later down the road when i have a bit more money to throw into it i would like to throw on the sti 2.5 heads, intake, turbo, exhaust
what i need to know:
i assume the 2.5 heads bolt up no issues? what headgasket should i use?
when it gets time to turbo i am planning on upping to a walbro 255 and using the sti injectors, is there anything im missing on the fuel part of this?
if i get a piggyback ecu will that handle boost control or will i also need to buy a boost controller? sorry im a turbo newb..
any recommended tuners out there?
does anyone know the cc difference in the ej22 single port heads compared to the ej257
sorry for being all over the map with my questions i was originally going to rebuild the engine back to stock but then all these options started popping up. all your help is very much appreciated
