This is my 98 Legacy GX:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/DSCF0292JPG-1.jpg
It's a manual 2.5L. The engine is a EJ25D if I'm right.
So far the only thing I changed on it is the fuel pump, for one with higher flow. Makes a lot of difference in higher revs.
Next thing probably is going to be an intake.

Nice clean start with a fresh start.
Didn't realize you have the same bumper, fogs, and similar grille size as the JDM market. Nice...

Looks like you kept your leather in pristine condition. Its a 98 but it you have folding mirrors (manual or power) not a fixed one? Looks like a hybrid of jdm/usdm. Does it come like that in brasil?
otaterli
03-25-2012, 11:42 AM
The mirrors fold manually. I'm not sure what Subaru did around here, I believe that my Legacy is all original on the exterior. So I guess they come like that here.

My dirty engine:

Also my hood has this foam:

I'm not sure what it is supposed to do but I think I'm going to take it out so the engine bay gets cooler.

Today I changed some fluids on the car. The brake fluid, the power steering and the clutch fluid.
Due to pedal play it took me a couple of hours to get the clutch fluid changed. I couldn't bleed it when just pressing the pedal so it took me some time to find it out.

The car now feels a lot better. The brake and clutch pedals feel better and the steering too.

So for an update: I hit my Legacy. =[
It was jump a bump on the front. I hit another car at traffic, my fault because I wasn't paying the necessary attention. Didn't damage the other car.
On my bumper it just cracked the paint a bit, nothing serious. But now I need to repaint the front bumper...

Long time no post. So here's whats up:
- I hit the car a while ago, nothing serious, 5km/h hit. I didn't pay the necessary attention to the car ahead. Cracked some paint off my front bumper but nothing serious.
- The engine is having some problems, the thing is I don't know how to explain it in english haha, anyway it's probably fuel or spark related. I'm going to check the ECU too look for any error code.
That's it. I might get a job soon so I'll put some mods on the Sub.

Took the car for alignment and camber today, the front is now set up. The car wasn't very bad off spec so my tire wear suspicion was wrong. Gotta find out why the front tires are wearing so much. The rear ones look like new.
Didn't charge the back because they charged extra. But the left wheel has toe in and the right has toe out so the car is always trying to to right, maybe that's why the tire wear. Next month I'll go fix it.
Huffer
08-23-2012, 03:19 PM
Alignment shop should have corrected toe - you want zero toe, and some slight negative camber.
admiral snackbar
08-23-2012, 08:40 PM
Huffer is right. Toe is the fastest wearing factor in an alignment. I can't imagine an alignment shop not correcting the toe.
otaterli
08-23-2012, 10:44 PM
Yeah I know about the tire wear, but the front ones are the ones that are worn out. The rear ones look new. So I don't know whats going on. haha
The thing is: alignment is quite expensive (like 80 bucks for the rear) so that's why I didn't correct it. Yeah price it's like that in Brasil. =/

Today took the spark plugs out and re-gaped them. They were like .8mm instead of the 1.1mm that's specified in the manual.
Engine is running more smoothly now but I only drove a little bit. Gonna drive more later.
otaterli
08-30-2012, 11:22 AM
The engine is running pretty well.
Here's a pic from another day where you can see the damage done to the front bumper:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/08/20120608_132535_403-1.jpg
Sorry about the quality and the mud. As you can see it's just a little bit of paint that cracked.
otaterli
09-06-2012, 08:59 AM
Even though I gapped the plugs I'm still having misfire issues. Can't figure out why.
I'm going to change the vacuum hoses because I know they are cracked and it was something I should have done a while ago, but aside from that I don't know anything else to look for to solve this problem...
otaterli
09-08-2012, 05:29 PM
So as I was checking the vacuum lines I found this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/air2520leak-1.jpg
That is the PVC hose, where it connects to the engine block. I wasn't connected so I plugged it in. Hopefully the misfiring will stop now.

Today I changed the valve cover gasket from the left side of the engine. It was leaking bad.
Also I started building an aluminium skid plate today, gonna post pics later.
otaterli
10-05-2012, 12:59 PM
So an update:
- the gasket isn't leaking anymore, I guess my job was good.
- bought iridium sparks for the car but didn't put them on yet.
- bought an aluminium tube for a custom made intake
I guess that's it.
otaterli
10-10-2012, 01:29 PM
Got the car aligned today. To 0 toe all around. Didn't do much drive it to see how it affects the dynamics.
Probably gonna work on the car over the weekend.
otaterli
10-12-2012, 09:07 PM
The car is driving awesome now! Feels so good around corners, a lot more stable.
Today I changed the valve cover gasket from the right side. My job on the left size didn't prove that good, there's a plastic half circle that probably is leaking, I should have checked it before putting the valve cover back.
Tomorrow I'll buy the screws for the new skid plate. Gonna post some pics soon.
otaterli
10-13-2012, 10:53 PM
The skid plate is done and installed in the car. Some pics:

Today my car failed me. :(
I was going to visit my grandparents in their farm and the car simply died and wouldn't start up anymore. No spark from the coilpack, don't know what caused it. Had to have the car towed. The road was full of mud and I didn't even get to have some fun there. Now the car is at the shop.

That sucks....hopefully it is nothing major and it gets sorted out
otaterli
11-13-2012, 07:19 AM
Thanks dude.
The problem was a unplugged connector....FML. The car is back at running again.
I discovered that one of my spark plug cables is broken(?), the tip of it was off. I put it back only but I'll try to do a better job of fixing it later.

11-13-2012, 12:32 PM
I hate when it is the little things like that which cause problems. haha
otaterli
11-22-2012, 06:18 AM
Yeah I hate it too. haha
My valve cover gasket job was bad. =[ It's leaking in the left side on top of the exhaust. I'm very concerned about fire.
Bought new tires: Kumho Solus KH17 195/65 15. Didn't mount them yet. I know the tires are supposed to be 195/60 but as I bought only 2 times and the previous owner put the wrong ones. =/
Also got iridium plugs that I'll put whenever the ones in the car go bad. I bought them and a friend shipped to me from the US so it was more like a test if it would get here.
otaterli
11-27-2012, 08:56 PM
Put the new tires today.
Finally I have grip in front of the car!! haha

12-19-2012, 08:48 AM
Lack of updates is because I neglected the car lately. Now I have vacation from college so I can start working on the car again. To do list is to fix all the oil leaks and find out the misfiring (which I think the knock sensor is causing).
For some reason I decided to take a pic of the car the other day:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/20121113_154228_591-1.jpg
The Kumhos have been working pretty good so far.
otaterli
12-22-2012, 06:49 PM
Changed the left valve cover gasket today. Put the old one there again. The older gasket is thinner than the one I had. That might have been causing the leak.
Also there were loads of oil in the intake system. And like 10L of oil in the oil pan, that might be why there was oil on the intake. Tomorrow I'll change the oil pan gasket.
otaterli
12-23-2012, 08:21 PM
Today I changed the oil pan gasket. NEVER AGAIN. haha. Spend the whole day working under the car.
otaterli
01-03-2013, 08:07 PM
Today I took out and fixed a bad spark plug wire, I think it came defective from factory but I only notice that a couple of weeks ago. So the warranty is probably gone. The idle is smoother now.
Misfiring that is happening is not over yet. I need to figure it out. Knock sensor might be it, it corrects the timing but just a little, like 2-3 degrees. Don't know how much it's supposed to do.
otaterli
01-21-2013, 07:19 AM
Yesterday I got a flat tire, right rear. Drove over a rock or something.
My spare is 195/60 and the tires are 195/65. I was worried that my diff would blow. I guess I was too worried haha
otaterli
02-12-2013, 09:14 PM
Today I tried to clean the IACV on the car. Didn't take it apart because I didn't had a gasket with me.
I think there are oil leaks on the cam seals. So gonna look into that. Also the valve stems might be bad.

I have been going to Brasil to visit my wifes family for the last 8 years and there are some different cars and trucks that we will never see here in the states including American cars. The one vehicle that blows me away while im there is a 99-2003 Dodge Dakota, They majority of them all come with a four cylinder diesel engine. That engine is not available here in the states and the idiots at the Dodge dealer told me i was dreaming so i had to pull up the Brasilian version of autotrader and prove it to them. I had six people standing around talking and in dissbelief at the dealership. There are also alot of Chevrolet suv's and cars that we don't have available here with weird names. Our version of the mini trailblazer is their police vehicle but it has a different name there, and they also have like five versions of fuel available Diesel, gas, ethanol, natural gas, propane that the cars come equiped with. Awesome place, people, food and culture. It is a must visit country for sure if you get a chance.
otaterli
02-16-2013, 11:36 AM
Thanks for the kind words for my country.
Yeah the diesel small trucks are something you can't find in the USA. The small SUV that the cops use is called Blazer, it's a S-10 SUV basically. The Dakota sounds way better with the V6 thought. haha

Que bom que voce gosta do Brasil cara.
I think my rear springs are bad. The rear gives too much when the car is loaded and it wont come back up quick. Better change these fast before the shocks are ruined too.
Also next month I think I'm going to get Group N engine mounts.

No work done on the car for a while.
I bought AC and alternator belts, gonna change them this week if it's possible.
Took the front wheels off to see why my brakes make noise and guess what? The screws that hold the brakes into the wheel hub (not sure if this is the right name) aren't there. Oh man how much I hate mechanics...

Got alignment done today. All wheels were good except the right rear toe. Corrected it and it's all good.
I'm ordering Group N engine mounts from Rallispec. Let's see how it affects the car. And gradually I'll be changing all the bushing for hardened stuff.
So, was it the springs or struts that were bad in the rear?
This is a real cool car.

What is the device above your stereo?
Whats it like for wrecking yards down there? You could make a lil money, pulling parts and sending them to the US! There are several parts the S. American countries got that didn't make it to the US, like the Shifter Console w/storage door, as well as the rear console with the cigarette holder & (2) coin slot/switch & the door handle loops!
Cars shaping up nicely!

Tomorrow I'll visit the machine shop, if they didn't do anything to the engine I'll take it back. I don't want anyone bullshiting me anymore.

Thanks dude, your car is cool too.
The machine shop is actually doing something!! I was surprised.
Bad news:
- my crank is bent (not sure if there's a proper term in english)
- one of the rods is bad too
So I'm gonna have to do some parts digging somewhere.

So the engine saga continues:
I picked up the engine from the machine shop because they said they couldn't do it and took to a mechanic that says he knows what he's doing. He will take the engine to a machine shop in Sao Paulo that's also cheaper.
My crank could be resurfaced if needed as a new crank is expensive as shit here.

I bought a polyurethane cylinder today. Gonna make myself some suspension bushings. If they are good I'll make to sell.

Thanks man.
Today I gave the guy the green light to work on the engine. He will do the heads and refurbish the crank. The block will be bored and I need to buy pistons, so that will wait.
Good luck. I hope you get it back soon. That being said, I hope your mechanic takes the time to do it right.

So after a while without updates:
Got my front bumper from the paint shop today, will post pics soon.
The engine is still at the machine shop because I'm a dumbass and broke the head bolts. So took then more time to get then out. Next week I'll have the engine probably.
Also I got a job so parts will be bought more often and this topic will be less boring. haha
Congrats on the job, man... I know how tough it can be without one.

I went to a shop today to talk about a clutch.
They said they can put ceramic plates on mine for not that expensive. I'm considering it. I know I do not own a race car but I want to mod it a bit and since the clutch is shit already why not put a better one?
Also there was a drift Nissan Silva there in for a new clutch. That thing sounded badass.

Check to see where your main thrust bearing is. Also check if its 48mm or 52mm rod bearing.
Check your old piston to see how many dot(s) are on top. I believe phase I has 1 dot and phase II has 2 dots

Coming back from the dead now.
I had some personal stuff along the way but now I can finally work on rebuilding the engine.
This "pro" machine shop I took the engine to tried to get the broken bolts out but by drilling it out and probably broke the bolt, instead of telling me that they simply welded new threads almost in the top of the block, threads those way smaller than original. So I didn't even took the block back there.
Fast forward some I had to machine that new thread and we put helicoils and fixed the shit.
Tomorrow I'll be going to a dealership to buy new bolts and probably in a couple of weeks the block will be together again.

Muse these are the headers that came with the car, look like turbo headers but I have no turbo. :( The primaries are probably equal length but they are like 3" long and the merge of the 2 banks is just terrible. Steering rack bushings and the pitch stop with poly bushings designed by me.

Of course the last pic I take is blurry...meh.
So over the weekend I put in the clutch and pressure plate and put the engine in the car.
This took more time than it should due to me being retarded and not centering the clutch and installing the right side engine mount backwards. After that everything was smooth.
I connected the wiring and guess what? IT STARTED!!!! YES!!! Since I didn't have time to install the radiator is was just a few seconds of running but it was such a good feeling.
So the to do list is getting smaller and smaller, soon I'll have my car back.

Thanks for the support guys.
Today I got some work done:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/20141122_195837-2.jpg
Radiator, AC, alternator, steering pump, some gas hoses, bled the clutch cylinder and probably more that I forgot.
I started it again today and it cranked very little to run so that's nice, still no water in the system so just a couple of seconds of noise.
The oil light came on while I started it but I thought it was no big deal since the car hasn't really run to get the oil moving, but it was a big deal. Somehow there's a big leak on top of the engine, I'll have to take out the intake manifold to really check it, it was 10 pm already and I didn't feel like working all night long, hopefully it's something simple like a missing seal or bolt or something like that. =/
otaterli
12-20-2014, 06:47 PM
Updates, or the lack of them:
The leak on top of the engine is solved but I installed the rear main seal wrong, so guess what?
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/12/20141220_194232-1.jpg
Engine is out and waiting for a new main seal, I think I have one somewhere so I don't need to buy a new one.
Took me less than 3 hours to pull the engine out, I'm getting good at this haha.
Hopefully this is the last problem with the engine I have.
otaterli
02-27-2015, 06:34 PM
So finally an update: the car is up and running!!!
The second main seal I put in was leaking as well because it was old, not used but old. Since it leaked I had to get another one and paid a mechanic to install instead of me doing the work because I don't have that much free time anymore.
We fired it up today and it ran fine until up to temp. When I was moving the car the mechanic noticed a leak under the car, the power steering line bursted and I went a had it redone.
So no more leaks and took it for a ride, I forgot how much I liked the car.
Tomorrow I'll get more stuff done but now the important part is that IT'S FINISHED!!! One year and a half of downtime.

Some stuff I added to the car during the rebuild:
- urethane bushings to the pitch stop
- group N engine mounts
- urethane steering rack bushings
Pic of the pitch stop and steering rack bushings:

Not sure about the rack bushings but the engine and pitch stop mounts do make a difference. I can hear a lot more of the car and a little bit more vibration than normal. One nice thing is that I can hear the gear whine from the transmission and that's a hella cool noise, might be annoying on long trips though.

My car is having some issues like high idle and misfiring at around 1500 to 3000 rpm, not sure what's going on. I'll check the PCV valve and vacuum hoses.
