96 EJ22 Valve Adjustment

Hey guys! I'm still alive and kicking and so is my Lego but I've been super busy with life and I just haven't had much time to post any more :(

Anyway... I was changing the valve covers on her the other day and noticed that a few of the lifters/valves (what ever they are under there) are loose. I was just checking everything out before putting it back together and noticed one or two on the front PS side of the motor are able to be moved enough to click when pushed back and forth. Is this something easily fixed or ???? From what I understand pre 97 SOHC had different style valves then then my 96 which might make things tricky but I need to get it fixed before any more damage happens. Any suggestions??

Yes, the 97+ models had solid lifters, rather than ones that were adjusted by a hydraulic lash adjusting system. I don't know about a DIY tuning job on them though. That may be something you'd have to have a pro do.

But I'd wait for Mike-Tracy or Chuck to respond to that.

I haven't actually done a valve adjustment on an ej22, just on ej25d's. The procedure involves: finding the specs when the valves are closed, and getting the right sized disc/shim (that goes on top of the lifter), onto the lifter that brings that valve into spec. That's what you are talking about, your shims are loose? The dealership will be able to order any size you'll likely need.

If we're talking about the same thing, it's possible the shim(s) partially slipped off the bucket some how, and when you remove the cam you can put them back into place.

Oh and I should have clarified, my car is a 97 GT but the motor is a 2.2l from a 96 L

That looks like an old style HLA. Here's a link with the description on how to "bleed" the lifters.

I'm not too familiar with ej22's, but what you're describing sounds like a common problem on the HLA heads.
