so finaly my rwd wagon drift project has begun. i will keep this project simple to go drifting with it. i will keep everything mostly stock engine wise for this year.

1998 brighton 5spd
engine and mecanic: 2.2L stock
RWD center diff convertion
vlsd rear diff
suspension: stock
exterior: stock for now
interior: stock a/c and cruise. crank windows and manual locks basic
wheels: none yet lol. got a few sets posting pics in the futur as it goes

just got one exterior pic for now.

removed exhaust, drive shaft and shifter taking off to access removel of rear cover to remove center diff
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/subirwdproject7-1.jpg

center diff with rear cover
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/subirwdproject2-1.jpg

center diff welded up. the section comes apart with ring clip. viscous coupler for front diff removed. rear drive gear and spider gear put back in and welded up. then front part put back on with snap ring.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/subirwdproject5-1.jpg

welded a beed all around the gear at the back forgot to take a pic of that side

painted blue crossmember

so i had such a hard to remove shift link onto tranny i had to cut it. i had a first gen tranny so i wanted to take the link. but as you can see completely different. shorter and everything is oposite.
first gen bottom and second gen up
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/Photo0346-1.jpg

so took the end piece and welded it
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/Photo0347-1.jpg

little blue paint
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/Photo0348-1.jpg

removed rear diff and put in this vlsd from a 2000 legacy outback winter package
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/Photo0359-1.jpg

swap out axle from original diff. because of drum brakes and no abs. the wouldnt go in properly.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/03/Photo0360-1.jpg

thats it for now ill keep working on it. now to do. fixe drum brakes. put new bearing and put back front suspension and knucles.

Welding the rear diff might be best. If left unwelded, it could cause something similar to this, http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47241.

Points for backyard mechanics!
More points for welding stuff, and even more points for building a drift wagon.

You should ditch the rear glass and rivet in some lexan plastic - it'll dramatically change the weight of the tail making it even easier to rotate around. And you can weld in some x-bracing from the roof to the floorpan. At least with a wagon you can put your race wheels in the back and still drive it on the road.

Props for not just removing the front axles and calling it a day. This thing will be legit.

country side drifter
05-16-2012, 09:28 PM
the front wheels are XXR 006 17x7 plus 40ish offset. they were black and copper lip. but were scratch like crazy so painted them gold with white lip

so finaly went out drifting on the track. everything went well without a hitch. the only thing is the shifter link under the car came out of the bushing quick fix with a new washer that was it. everything held up strong no wierd noise all good. so i am very happy with how it turned out so far. tricky a first to get back on the saddle but all good after a while. very happy with this platform hows it feels drifting. i like it better then my mk3 supra. the vlsd did its job, a couple of time it unlocks but understandeble on some corners when you miss and you get to much grip because of that. but when properly sideways it worked like a charm. and this way i like it better when it grips too much at least your wheel stops turning so its should less hard on braking something.

Do you have any e-brake mods or just clutch kicking?

LeggyxPower
06-27-2012, 04:16 PM
im from ottawa too! where do you go drifting?

country side drifter
06-27-2012, 08:21 PM
no e-brake mods i have rear drum brakes and works very good compare to to the disc with the e-brake drum brake style inside. and i do not do any clutch kicking i find its to hard on everything and i want this too last. i never clutch on any of my previous cars too to dam hard on things. and hey cool somebody from ottawa i went drifting at st-eustache. i live closer to there then ottawa. but i do want to hit capital speedway in ottawa this year too a couple of times.

Wow this is awesome!! Im very impressed by how well it does with stock motor. I would love to do this to my bk. But I would have to do a 5mt swap.
So a "RWD center diff convertion" is just removing the front drive shafts and welding up the front diff?

country side drifter
12-30-2012, 09:56 AM
yes i love the car in rwd i had a few rwd cars before this station im in love with love the feeling. the 2.2 will do the work just for fun but is very underpowered theres lots of times i just dosent have the power the keep em spinning so it would just stop drifting.as for rwd convertion yes its not that hard just i little bit of time and effort and a good welder. you coulds just weld the center diff. but removing the front axle helps for understeer. just have the keeps the ends so wheels wont fly off lol
