While I think it's great that we have safe cars, that is the main reason our cars are so heavy. Imagine the fuel economy savings and performance gains if all of the safety equipment was removed.

I would happily accept the trade-off. Hell, I used to daily drive a Suzuki Cappuccino in the winter. I am clearly not concerned about automotive safety.

Subaru is moving in that direction - the new Impreza has a lighter frame & more rigidity. Admittedly, the article was a bit old.

What would really help is if carbon nanotube tech became cheap/plentiful. Super strong, ultralight car frames that don't rust!

Laws of physics. If all vehicles made were lighter, they would need less powerful engines, and people would probably drive slower.

I blame the industrial revolution for the steel worker unions. Instead of investing in tech research, money was poured into building cheap fabrication tools and heavy weight materials.
Of course, I'm not wishing we DIDN'T have high rise buildings and wonderful architecture, but when I see that 4500lb Caddy being driven 80mph down the highway...well.

Subaru started to do this stuff in the 90's. They were trying to get into that "safe" car model and market that Volvo was in. Volvo has always been safety minded from the start, not as much when Ford took over.

My 97 Outback I cut up had some crazy pain in the ass B-pillars to cut through com paring to what I was used to. Volvo started to develop this kinda of stuff in the late 60's. some crazy facts about Volvo, they had 3 point seat belts in the 50's, drop away engines, padded dash's, and brake away steering columns. All this started in the 50's.

I have seen a large amount of killed Subies with all the J/Y hounding I do and also being a body man. The one thing I can say, they have the same feeling for the owner/passengers that Volvo did, save our customers lifes and they will buy another one.

I never noticed the white BK on the crusher in the beginning of that commercial! And then another white BK one right in front of the camera on a stack of cars.

I love that fact that these cars are safe and fun to drive!

Sadly I have been rear ended twice in the last year and a half ,first a 2007 fozy hit waiting for a light ,wrote it off but no broken bones. I found a 2002 legacy l se absolutely mint met all required points 104228 klm and every recipt for any work done including timeing belt head gaskets and all other belts all this work was done at subaru dealer at 104100 klm! Was in love oh and yea it was black and tinted .Anyway coming home last Thursday got hit on the highway ,slowed down for traffic congestion and a rental Ford focus hit and shot me off the highway into the ditch and a foot of mud ( no broken bones) its Sunday and I can walk stiff as f@*k. Thats why I drive Subaru
