I have a bunch of subarus manuals on my computer where I got this information.

Phase 1 4eat were used on 1990-1998 Legacys
Phase 2 4eat were used on 1999+ legacys

1990-1994 used 'up shift logic' which would shift the transmission up a gear no matter where you had the lever located. 1995 + legacys and 1993+ imprezas used a fuel cut to stay in gear and protect the engine.

phase 1 actually had a duty B solenoid which controlled the torque converter, and the duty C solenoid controlls the power to the rear wheels. 95% power would lock it up. With air conditioning off, it should only take 1.2 seconds the the transmission to engage from N to D, and 1.5 to engage from D to R.

phase 2 is basically like the phase one but with a few redesigns.

Which trannies had external spin-on filters?

that was one of the changes in the phase 2 (1999). It requires no scheduled maintenance.

A few other thigns I found...
The phase 2 will not shift up into 4th if the ATF is below 12*C. When ABS is engaged it will forcefully shift into 3rd. It will not allow a shift into reverse above 6mph.

Phase 1 will not shift into 4th until 40-45F.

Phase 1 and 2 are mostly the same operations wise, and 12*C is about 50*F

I'd make a split between the 90-94 and 95-99 Legacy 4EAT's as well. The 95-99 4EAT's do not have power mode, whereas the 90-94 ones do. The 90-94's also have a manual button to make the tranny hold in gear which the 95-99's don't.

Also, after '91, there are no 4.11 geared 4EAT's I believe. They're 3.900 I think (I may be mistaken about this).

All the phase 1 transmissions do the same thing, they just have a different way of doing it with a manual button, hold button, or physical location.

The legacy final drive seemed to be 4.11 for AWD and 3.9 for FWD

That is incorrect because the TLegs from 92-94 are 3.900 geared (they also happen to be AWD).

It's even weirder because the SVXi have AWD 4EAT's and are geared at a crazy 3.545.

Youre probably right as this document doesnt really specify what years and such.

There's a lot of good information here.

If GatorGT sees this, he should send it to the SLi101 section after it dies down.

we don't kill n00bs here ;)

Anyways, EAT stands for the Subaru automatic Transmission, I'm not sure what the actual acronym denotes though.

EAT = E + AT. AT < MT. this thread helps explain why my AT acts like a little bitch sometimes. oh well, cant expect much out of an 11-year old computer, i guess.
