I have a 99 legacy brighton with some crazy issue. The AT Oil light comes on flashing and it is followed by the service engine light. I started by changing the tranny fliud and also the tranny oil filter. Followed this up by pulling the tranny pan and cleaning the seliniods(sp). this fixed the problem for maybe 200 miles. The lights came on again. So I took it to a transmission shop and they told me it was a ground wire not grounding. They cleaned up a couple fo grounds and I got maybe 500 miles this time before it happened again. I got the codes cleared again and I cleaned up more grounds... all the grounds that I could find. This time again only about 500 miles before I hit a large bump and set the lights off again.

Has anyone had this prblem or heard of it. I am scared that the dealer is going to rape me on labor... but it is the only option I have left...

SO does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Michael

How many times does it flash? the amount of flashes corresponds to the error. It should flash between 11 and 36 times.
Edit: I may be incorrect about the ATF light flashing. the older system has a long and short flash. Long = 10 and short = 1. Add them together to get the appropriate code

Try disconnecting the battery for a few hours. That will reset the ECU and TCU and maybe clear this up.

If the CEL is on, what's the code?

Also - mine flashes intermittently on random occasions - cold/hot starts, up/down hills etc. Never affects how the car drives though.

As an aside, for the good health of your transmission, please add some LubeGard ATF Protectant. Seriously.

well it seems that the throttle position sensor is reading backwords.... this could be my issue. I love subaru parts....

and the code is a 1700 code i believe. I can't remember off the top of my head

Thanks a buch for you help so far.
