I imagine it they'll come out with a FB Turbo at some point, but I'm not a huge fan of the update. The headlights look WAY to busy and the grill looks like it'll slice your throat, maybe I just need to see it on the road?

Nothing about the styling of this car sets it apart from a Ford Taurus

I don't see it at all honestly. And the front end is a big upgrade from how it used to look. Way more aggressive looking than the 2011 Legacy:

Must be the blue oval

Edit: Also, just noticed the sunroof, fogs, and alloys; more than likely a higher end model.

Double Edit: The grill is made to resemble the 2012 Impreza. And it looks more square in the front.

OMG TRIPLE EDIT: Let's just hope that the DOHC FB25 isn't a reincarnation of the DOHC EJ25 lol

The Legacy (with the exception of the BD GT, IMO) has always looked pretty similar to other "bland sedans."

It's like the Impreza - it's always looked fairly similar to the Toyota Corolla...

With all the safety and gas mileage regulations, it's surprising that cars don't look even more similar than they do. There are only so many ways to make a car practical, safe for pedestrians and passengers, and aerodynamic at the same time.

Of course, I was always of the belief that Subaru owners never cared that much about 'good looking cars.'

Just to be clear here, is this a redesigned 5th gen, or the 6th gen?

geckoboy86
03-30-2012, 10:54 PM
Still 5th...You go by chassis codes for generations...
New face, totally new engine...

It's almost a 5.5 gen due to the new engine options in my opinion.

Kind of like the difference between the 3rd gen models A-C and model D?

I'm still not a fan. It looks more agressive, but its like.... a stupid kind of agressive.

I know I will come back to regret saying this, but I can't wait for the 6th gen.

I looked around on the japanese site and saw that the new model has a lot of customizable options that i'm sure will make their way over to the US in due time.

Personal opinion, I would never by one to keep. I think they look like crap, even more so now. Looks just like everything else. Makes me want to buy a Tesla Model S even more... The wheel arches look like hell, as in look like an SUV, and this is a CAR, NOT an SUV. Newest Legacy I'll own to keep with be a 2009... These cars are just not something I would want to look at every day.

Thats my 2 cents...

I'd be OK with no GT if they offered the 3.6L with a manual.

Wiscon_Mark
03-31-2012, 08:54 AM
I'm guessing that they just need time to come up with an FB series turbo engine and haven't "officially announced anything yet."

The GT wasn't exactly a sales flop, and it can't have costed Subaru that much money to make since it was nothing unique (Legacy chassis, WRX engine, upgraded suspension basically). So I'm guessing this won't last long. Especially since a lot of people are probably going to petition SoA to change the decision.

Dead91silvia

Not having a GT is a bad move. People were customizing and up grading the turbo GT's like crazy, at least over here.

Alos, if they would just kill the massive un-flowing wheel arches and gave it a new grill that didnt look like a Kenworth, it would be a good looking car.

I do like the looks of my Legacy (minus the rust). However, when I first got it, I didn't at all. I would have rather had my mother's Honda Civic *gasp* (I was 15 at the time). Subarus have always, and will always grow on their owners. Nobody like any of the new Impreza designs when they first came out, and now everyone is fiercely defending each and every one of them because they've owned them and they love the cars, and it looks beautiful to them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and our perceptions change when we drive them.

Alfa Romeos are ugly as hell and people who have driven them (see Top Gear episodes about Alfas to really get the gist) think they're the most wonderful things in the world. Same idea.

Am I saying this Legacy looks good? I think it's an improvement over the 2011/12 models, but no, I don't personally think its that great. Am I saying it matters? No, not that either.

Dead91silvia

Well, I have always liked the 2nd gen Legacy. It didnt have to grow on me at all. Nether did the 3rd or 4th gens.

However, I am a different type of person. I tend to like cars that people think are boring or ugly. I love the Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro), but most dont see the way the car flows. On the flip side, I absolutely hate and detest the look of the Subaru Tribecca. I would never onw an older one, they did change them a little to be more appealing. I also hate the big oval grill they had on the Impreza's for a while.

The thing about beauty is its all in the eyes of the beholder. Personally I like Honda's. Would I own one to keep, most likely not, unless it was a Type-R. I never liked the 1st gen Legacy, but then again I love the older boxy Volvos.

The big thing with car companies now is that they dont listen to the buyers. Perfect example is GM. Subaru has done well for the most part but they could also do better. Subaru has so many different cars in Japan that we dont get. Forget the motors we dont get, it's the cars!

What I find funny is that Subaru made the Legacy (Outback) an SUV. Why? We have the Tribecca and that IS an SUV, why mess with the configuration of a car that sells well? Well, they do that and then we loss the sport version of our beloved Legacy and to me that makes no sense. I have been looking at getting a Spec B Legacy because the car looks awesome, has balls, and is still a classy car! I look at the new car and I see a Ford, not a Subaru. I see a car company thats starting to conform to the rest of the world and thats not the way Subaru has been.

Ok, I'll get off my soap box now...

The new Outback is not a SUV.. its a CUV... just like the Forester..

Its still a Legacy with raised suspension and a bigger roof..

It still handles like a Legacy 3.6R.. just higher up..

Its gotten to the point that the Legacy is so large and heavy that it doesn't make sense producing them with a H4.. Its like a Maxima with a 2.5 i4.. brutal to drive..

Framed windows.. Maxima body lines.. Lack of GT.. these are all things that Subaru should not of done.. How well did Japan accept the new body style? Space is scarce and rolling in a larger Legacy is not functional ..

Arg!! Subaru is turning into Toyota.. boring cars that are great on gas..

Chuk, the Outback is being advertized as an SUV here in WA. It's even won awards in the US in the SUV category, so it might just depend of location as to what the class is now. It's been placed in the same class as a Forester and that I dont like at all! no reason for it.

I do agree that it is large and is basically a full size car now. I took my dad to look at the new ones a year or 2 ago and he doesnt like they way they look and hes an old dude.

I also wonder how Japan feels about it also. I wonder if they have different drivetrain also. I would assume so... I even see the Impreza getting big. So is the BRZ to replace the Impreza in the compact category?

I believe it's always been in the SUV category in most people's eyes. And I agree - bigger & heavier is not the way to go. I won't argue you guys on those points. But they have little to do with looks.

To the point Robin had earlier - The Outback & Tribeca are still in a different class - price. The Outback starts at $23,000 and the Tribeca at almost $31,000. The Tribeca is much more luxurious and has the 7 seat capability. The thing is, I don't see why anyone would buy it, despite the rave reviews about its off road prowress (not that it's a Wrangler or anything, but it supposedly does well on the wilderness trails). It's not big enough, it's too heavy, and it's underpowered. The Outback is a much better choice because it's less expensive and less ungainly.

I bought a Tribeca, and this is why.

I wanted a 3.6L (whether it be an Outback or Tribeca). We have a turbo Legacy wagon and two V8 vehicles in our fleet, there is no way I could buy a big new Outback with only 170 hp and not even a limited slip rear diff. My wife wanted leather, so that means I was looking at an Outback 3.6R Limited, which is over $32k. On the other hand, the Tribeca Limited is only $33k.

The dealer was trying to move Tribecas and offered a huge discount, so I ended up getting it for way less than a BASE Outback 3.6. Plus I hate the new Legacy/Outbacks push-button e-brake, and the big Outback still comes with skinny 225/60/17 tires. It was a no brainer to go with the 4th-gen Legacy-derived Tribeca with the beefy 255/55/18 setup. The rear seats slide back (when you're not using the 3rd row) to provide tons more passenger room than an Outback. I would only use it as a 7-seater in an emergency (we have other bigger cars) but at least it could do the job, whereas 2 people would be rolling around in the hatch if I was driving an Outback. Also, my wife likes the Tribeca's big mirrors lol.

The higher Outback trims are close to the Tribeca in price (Outback 3.6R STARTS at $29k) and I think the Tribeca makes a lot more sense than the Outback even as a 5-seater car. Obviously if I had a lower budget I wouldn't be able to buy the Tribeca, but I wouldn't buy the Outback either. I'd take the Forester.

Anyway, more on topic, RIP turbo Legacy for 2013. But then again, I never liked the 5th gen. I agree that Subaru went a different route with the 5th gen - big, mainstream car. It sells well, and that's good for Subaru, even if it seems to be a duplication of the role the Forester and Tribeca play in the lineup. They'll probably drop the Tribeca instead of updating it though (it's the last car left in the lineup without Bluetooth audio and the new steering wheel controls) - glad I picked it up before it goes away!

Plus I hate the new Legacy/Outbacks push-button e-brake

I took my dad to look at the 2010's when they first came out and besides them looking like ass, this was the final straw! I told the sale man, "Wow... No hand or foot brake for the E-brake? Never gonna own one of these!" He asked way and I just said, only more problems down the road.

I should have asked what would happen if the battery died and the e-brake was on or if it could be set if the batt was dead...

I used to hate the Tribecca, but the later ones are not that bad and a whole lot better looking then the 5th gen Leggy...

There is a special tool that comes with the car and you insert it into the ebrake access hole and turn the bolt like 400 times to release the e-brake completely if the battery is dead.

Show me proof of that claim.. Toyota needs to own 55% or more of FHI/subarus shares to acquire them.

A joint effort BRZ/FRS is just that. A joint effort.

We're definitely getting it, they said somewhere (I wish I could remember where to add credibility) that the turbo'd engine will come first to the Legacy, then be passed around to other models. I assume that means the 2014 Legacy.

I just hate being a year behind Japan. Especially when they do something cool in their final year of a chassis, such as the D type front end for 3rd gens.

The answer isn't "Subaru screwed us over." At least, it wasn't all their fault. In 1995 (actually, 96, but Subaru cut their losses with the new chassis in 95) when the US went to OBDII and emissions regulations changed, turbo Subarus didn't meet DOT spec. Subaru wasn't able to manufacture or get ahold of catalytic converters in a cost effective way that would allow them to successfully make money on turbo models in the US. That changed with the WRX in 02 after GM had bought shares of Subaru and opened up new supply lines for less expensive parts for them. I would also argue that the late 90s wasn't exactly the heyday for sports cars in general. The Supra died, the Eclipse was watered down, and quite a few other models either were eliminated or changed because the market was changing to SUVs & other such vehicles.

Subaru is going through a similar change now. With their partnership with Toyota, they're gaining access to direct injection tech & electronic turbos, which has brought about the FA series engines and now they're moving that tech into models step by step. I suspect we'll see a Turbo Legacy when they know it's good & ready. I don't blame Subaru for moving a little more slowly than some companies because they almost always get it right (EJ25 Headgaskets being the major exception).

Fun fact: The S401 doesn't have OBD II.... so it couldn't pass inspections here if it had to. I suspect that is the major problem with the rest of the Japanese models as well.
