View Full Version : Has anyone ever fitted twin turbos to a 2.2 block
I have a 2.2 block from a normally aspirated car. I have the heads, turbos and everything else from a 2.0L twin turbo. I recall reading somewhere that I can turn it into a 2.3L by fitting a crank from a 2.5. I.m also able to get the ecu mapped for fuelling so thats not an issue.
If I can build it, it will go into what was a 2.0L twin turbo ebgine bay so the loom is good.
Anyone see any obvious problems that I,ve not thought of? Or am I mad to consider it?

What are your power goals?
And as per the usual modus operandi, pick two and I'll be able to help you a little better.

The idea simply came up because, of all the spare components I have, I could make the above engine. (not the 2.3 though, just the 2.2).
I would just need to buy bearings and gaskets to assemble the engine, so expense is not really the issue, unless I have to buy new pistons/rods etc.
The only reason to do it was as a way to use some of the spares I have. I hadn't considered power outputs or longevity. It goes without saying that, the higher the power, the more fragile it will be, but could I get any power gains over a 2.0L twin turbo and still retain longevity?
As you can see, this is at the research stage at the moment, so any words of wisdom are more than welcome.

Ah, okay then.
I would recommend keeping the larger of the two turbos, ditching the smaller one, and custom fabbing some parts for the actual build (up-pipe/down-pipe). The real benefit of your idea comes from the extra .2L of displacement, which will give you more power than a 2.0 *duh*.
Now, as for the parts that are required, I would recommend:
OEM main bearings
ACL Rod bearings (very important. if you're going to build something do it correctly the first time)
And OEM seals all around.
If you refresh and hone the 2.2 block you're looking at starting with a fresh block, which will hold upwards of 300hp; but that's more than enough to grenade your transmission, should you choose to drive it aggressively or recklessly. I'm not sure as to the heads you should use: I'm a huge proponent of using 2.5DOHC heads because of their flow capacity, but USDM WRX heads offer similar flow as well. Since you have neither of those, I would do a little research here on the forums *(I recommend searching the user: lordflashheart, who builds these engines for a living; he posted a LONG write-up on the intricacies of soobie motors and head volume (in CC's)).
In general, it's best to stay away from stroking the 2.2 unless you want to spend $$$. I found kits on ebay for $1400-2000 that include forged pistons, crank, bearings, etc. But you seem to be looking for the less expensive option. In this particular case, you happen to have a good block, but your heads are far from the best. If you have the extra coin, try to have the heads from the ECU/manifold you plan to use, ported and polished to help the flow and reduce choking of the engine.

I was always going to get new main and big end bearings anyway. Good advice on refreshing the block.
If I persist on using the 2.0L heads, (so I can go twin turbo), would I use 2.2L head gaskets rather than the 2.0L ones?
If I go single turbo, I have a wrx head that I could use on the non turbo bank but having never worked on a WRX, I.m not too sure on the vacuum system or wiring differences from the twin turbo set up.

Tommy Kaira made a TT 2.2 but I'm not sure of the specifics, which bottom end.
I,ve always assumed that was a 22B bottom end but I could be wrong, plus, they are as rare as.....

I can't tell you for certain about the headgasket, but your second sentence confuses me. I'm almost positive that you cannot mix heads like that. You need to use the (matching) heads from the manifold you are going to use, which needs to be from the ECU you're going to use. No matter what, this is pretty much necessary; otherwise you're looking at going around your arsehole to scratch your elbow in terms of tuning and running headaches.

Headgasket needs to match the bore size of the block, not the heads.

Visually, the heads from a twin turbo are the same as a WRX model except for the oil outlets on the twin turbo version for the turbo. The inlet and outlet manifolds fit without issue. Thats not the route I would opt to take ideally. I would like to stick to the twins.

The wrx heads have similar cfm properties to the 2.5L DOHC engines, higher than the 2.2T heads.
But, it sounds like what you want is to use the TT setup? I would search around the internet and try to find a way to ditch the preliminary turbo from the setup. I have never been convinced that twin turbos are better than one properly sized turbo. Btw, when I say "properly sized" I'm referring to what Corky Bell (author of "Maximum Boost", which I suggest you snag a copy of) would call properly sized. Look at your final goals, what you want to have as a final product, and start with that as your foundation.
Does that make sense?

Umm, changing out a crankshaft doesn't change the volume of the 4 cylinders. You have to bore the cylinder out, or dish the piston heads, or create space on the head of the cylinder to up the volume.

I think I remember reading about it being a bored 2L, or maybe that was a different one.
