View Full Version : Horrible radio reception??

If the car is running I get a horrible noise blocking out any radio stations.
It changes tone depending on what the RPMs are at.
This happened with the stock radio and with a new headunit I just installed.
Is it a bad ground? Bad plug wires? Aliens? :alien:
Any help would be great.

You installed the aftermarket deck yourself? Sounds like a bad ground, or maybe a speaker wire is shorting.

Double check the antenna cable too.

Yeah I put the headunit in (it came out of my old car), but it did the same thing with the stock unit.
I do get good reception as long as the engine isn't running.

hmmm...that's interesting. I'm thinking something in the car is grounding out to the body BADLY and it's messing with your antenna.

When I bought my '98 Outback I had horrible reception the first time I drove it. Then I noticed that the manual antenna had been pushed in. I pulled it out and the reception is great!

It's got an auto-antenna and that's working fine.
Actually I get FM stations normally, it's AM that's whacked.

Yes I know: "Why even listen to AM?"
I listen to the news stations on when I'm driving to work at 6am.
Well I did anyway, now I can't.
Can't stand listening to FM, same bloody songs over and over and over.
And I'm NOT paying a monthly fee to listen to the radio

hmmm, I've heard of 2 cycle engines creating interference, but never a car engine. Strange.

And AM doesn't use the antenna on the car.
