I just got a set a 96 gt foglights (from Gator GT) and Im looking for some bulbs, a thread on NASIOC said they take H3's? I have no idea what that means.

Are H3s universal? Can I walk into Pep Boys and just buy a set of "H3" bulbs or am I better off going to the dealer? I guess this is more of a lighting question than a foglight question.

Pretty much any fog light will take an H3 bulb, it is very universal.

are all H3s the same? or am I looking for a specific wattage or volts?

Im pretty sure theyre all the same. 12V55W. Take a look at the current bulbs (if you have them)

this is what all H3's Ive ever seen look like

just a question... Why'd you get GT fog lamps when they won't fit in your bumper?

Superu264
04-19-2006, 11:13 PM
96 gt

95-96 were the same

edit: maybe they're not gt what do I know.. GatorGT said they were gt, so I believed him

Wiscon_Mark
04-19-2006, 11:18 PM
the 96 GT did have those fogs, there weren't many 96 GTs though. The 97 GTs had the bumpers with the wider fog openings. I have the same fogs as you do though.

Superu264
04-19-2006, 11:20 PM
Yeah I cant wait to put them in.. well once I buy some bulbs

a little OT but are the wires for the switch in the dash already or will I have some work to do?

Wiscon_Mark
04-19-2006, 11:22 PM
you have work to do. If there wasn't already a switch, there will be no pre-existing wiring.

Superu264

crap

and of course its going to rain all weekend :cussing:

does this mean there are no wires in the bumper/fender as well for the foglights?

Wiscon_Mark

correct-o.

You may want to pickup a relay from Radio shack as well as a decent amount of wiring.

Marks thread has useful info on wiring up a stock switch
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=2217

A relay has 4 connectors on it. there should be something on the packaging saying which connector does what (each connector has a number) and if not thres probably something on the web.

The relay can go anywhere, I have mine sitting by my fuse box
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/486000-486999/486027_8_full.jpg

Probably the easiest way would be to cut it off, but with mine I'd like to try and keep it.

Your switch has relay built in, I thought. No need for a seperate one. You'll just have to find a wire diagram for what each of those wires are for (ground, power, power from a seperate circuit, etc...)

phi11
04-20-2006, 06:29 PM
um......I don't think that the relay is built in,
I just took apart a switch, and all it is, is a switch,

I think that I have the pin read out, one sec.

shazapple
04-21-2006, 04:02 PM
I just put it on the bolt hold the fusebox down (picture above). its not the best place but its good enough. You could also try putting it on the firewall. Anywheres good really as long as its not flopping around excessivly.

Plays_with_Toys
04-21-2006, 07:24 PM
there's also some holes right behind the headlight. It looks like something for a horn to mount to... maybe there is supposed to be a horn there? Anyway, thats where I mounted my relay. By the way, the small holes look threaded, but they are not. A 5mm bolt does go in nicely and might wiggle out over time, but is a decent fit. So maybe something a hair larger, or and expanding screw, like for dry wall could work or something. Atleast then the relay is hidden.

fog lights don't help with foreward visibility that much if you have them adjusted correctly :-? The only time they really helped me was when I adjusted my fog lights as high beams for the HIDs

badbasser98

so you could run it to your parking lights or something and that way you could double the fog lights as both better night visability and DRLs?

Wiscon_Mark

For anyones reference. This is how you can wire the fogs and use them whenever you want.

http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/2605/fogdiagrammy5.th.jpg (http://img366.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fogdiagrammy5.jpg)

Required:
- Red insulated wire, probably can get away with 12-14ga.
- Black insulated wire same gauge as Red.
- 30 Amp Relay (Autozone)
- Battery connection with inline fuse (Autozone)
- 30 Amp fuse for between battery and relay.
- Dash switch (I used an OEM switch)
- Wire Strippers.
- Soldering iron and solder.
- Electrical tape.

I did this on a L sedan. I didn't have cruise, but the plug for it was still back there and it had a switched 12v lead on it. I used this to power the switch so that the fogs would turn off with the ignition like the headlamps do.

If you want me to clairify anything, let me know.

I bought a "foglight wiring kit" at pep boys for $5 and a 30amp relay for $4 and it has everything but the wire cutters/strippers (already have a a real nice set) So I will be digging into this tonight. The fogs came with the switch, so I'll have to wire that up too. Half tempted to tie them into the parking lights instead, and eliminate the switch? Too bad I am wiring retarded. :-?

Do you have an OEM switch?

If so, just use a volt/ohm meter and measure which two pairs go from infinitre resistance to zero resistance when you push the switch. Then those will be the two leads you want to use

DONE!!!!

Finally had a few moments and wired these all together today. decided to forgo the whole "hook up OEM switch" step and got a nifty wiring diagram off of RallyLights.com to hook them straight into the corner lights (with 30 amp relay and inline fuse) Of course, my wife is out with the memory card for the camera so I cannot post any pics yet.

Awwwww. Sorry to hear that man, let me know when it gets there and do a write up with pics.

Impressions with the foglights:

Installing - a complete bitch and a half, I took the short cut of trimming the bumper cover while it was still on the car. The previous owner was in a "slight fender bender" and tweaked the front end and I was concerned about reattaching the cover. Then you have to order th inserts and might as well get the bolts too. The inserts went in with no hassles, then it was 10 minutes on each side of removing fender liners so you could position the lights once they were in the openings (since you can't really reach them from the top) Make sure that you have a good length of wire lead on the ends of each pigtail, because once they are in, you won't have any room to work in there (noticed this before I mounted so I saved myself the headache) Wiring was a pain, because I had originally wanted to use the stock switch, and ran wires accordingly, then changed my mind so that the lights come on with the parking lights. Just creating more work for myself  Once I had a plan it took about 15 minutes of running, cutting and splicing wires to get them all hooked up.

Driving - wow, are my headlights that crappy?
Yes, yes they are. The fogs are push out a nice wide blanket of light, but not that far of a distance (need to adjust them out after I soak the adjusting screws in PB Blaster) but man, they definately make a differance. Very pleased with the outcome, and they look pretty cool too.

Hey guys. This is where it said to post fog questions so here I go......

I was thinking about doing the JDM Foglight conversion on my '99 BK. I know there is going to be some cutting, and a lot of TIME! lol Just to be clear though, I am talking about the JDM foglights with the projector AND the turn lights. Also, the car does NOT currently have fogs, so there is no factory switch or wire.

1.) I have looked over the wiring diagrams that have been posted, and found them VERY helpful. However, I was looking to have the fogs operate just like the factory units. That is, they turn off when the ignition is turned off, and they automatically turn off when the high beams are selected. Pictures/crude drawings would be AMAZING. lol

2.) Is it possible to wire both the JDM fog and the turn light to come on as the collective "foglight." I see a lot of guys avatars have both on at the same time. I am sure this can be done, and I imagine that it would be as simple as a splice.

Thanks for all the help.

jonklein611
11-02-2008, 09:10 PM
I can def answer question #1).

Trick to make them turn off when the car is off is to use a relay. To make them turn off when the high beams come on, you need to find the ground for the low and high beams. A few min with a volt meter and you'll find the one that goes from 0V to 12V when the high beams are on. Simply ground it to that point and the relay will turn off when the high beams are on. I can go into more detail if needed.

2.)

You could def wire the turn light into there, but... I don't think it would be road legal as you would not have any turn signals. Typically the mod that you're referring to is the opposite. Most wire their fogs into the parking light, so they can have them on either with the highs or just have them without the headlights.

I added JDM fogs to my legacy using an OEM switch and OEM relay.

Let me know if you need more help.

Hey thanks for the help Jonklein611. That solves question one. As to question two I don't think I explained it right. Here is a picture, and I will see if I can make it clearer. lol
http://img394.imageshack.us/img394/3924/10fu.jpg

If the light look like this, the projector is the fog, and the reflector light is the turn light i was talking about. I am sure that I can wire them together, I was just looking for some guidance. lol thanks again.

I guess I just need to get a set of JDM fogs, and OEM switch, some wires, and a relay! lol Maybe a new battery too, just to make sure that there is a fresh power supply, and not to over tax the alternater. lol

The picture was just one that I found on the internet, not trying to promo anything.

jonklein611

Oh..... that side marker. The JDM fogs for my car (96) look like the outback ones:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/11/IMG_7740-2.jpg

So I'm sure you could wire the foglight side marker into the parking light switch. I thought you were talking about the JDM turn signal thingy.

OK. I used a OEM relay which has diff pin numbering than most relays (thanks subaru). Heres what i have:

"Looks like this from bottom of relay:

__|_|__
[ 5 2 ]
[ 3 1 ]

Note: 2 and 1, im not sure which is which... because hella does theres for voltage switch, ours change ground, so they might be backwards, eeek.

Pin 2 is Power from the Battery (via 15Amp fuse coming from under dash (Fuse 6, called Fog))
Pin 1 is connected to the Hi Beam Power Supply (via wire from 15A Fuse under hood (Fuse 26, which is powered by the H/L Right Relay))
Pin 3 is connected to your Fog Light Switch (pin 5 or 6 depending on the switch)
Pin 5 is Power to your Device (Fog lights)

I simply grounded the lights to the frame.

Nice thing about using a relay is that it will behave the same as your headlights, turn the key off and the lights go out.

OEM Switch Wiring:

looking from the back of the switch:

1 3
--4
--5
2 6

Pin 1: Goes to Low Beam ground (this connection breaks when you move the lights to Hi Beam, so the fogs will go out) (if you dont like that, then ground the switch to the chassis)

Pin 2: ground for the illumination bulb (one that dims with rest of dash, tie it into another switch on your dash)

Pin 3: Goes to the same point as RELAY Pin 1.

Pin 4: +12 volts for illumination bulb when dash is illuminated (tie into another switch in dash)

Pin 5: Connects to RELAY Pin 3

Pin 6: Connects to RELAY Pin 3

Note: Pin 5 and 6 are interchangeable, some switches have one or the other or both."

I'm about 90% sure that's what i actually ended up doing. I'd recommend having a multi meter to check voltages and such.

I used suitcase connectors because I don't like soldering in tight quarters. Took me a slow paced evening to get everything working the way it should.

Simple steps:

1. check fogs direct from battery to make sure they work (if they don't work, replace bulbs and so on till they do).

2. wire up relay with switch. Make sure relay is getting power (you'll hear it click when you turn on the switch. Check relay loses power when the hi beams are on. This way your fogs will go out when the highs are on.

3. wire fogs into relay, ground fogs to chassis.

4. Enjoy your new lights.

Everything should be working. If you do it right with the OEM switch the power light will be on when the fogs are on, and the green illum will dim with the rest of the dash.

(i haven't perfected that yet as my dash light stays on when the hi beams are on and the green illum light on the button don't come on) I've been too lazy to rip apart the dash and find what i grounded wrong.

Heres mine at full power with Silverstar bulbs:

Yeah, that was what I was looking for! I am going to start collecting the parts. Cutting the bumper is going to suck, but the finished product is going to be GREAT!

Anyone with the JDM Projector/Turn Light style fogs. What do you folks think? How do they look at night?

And the multimeter is my friend! lol

jonklein611
11-03-2008, 09:20 AM
since your car does not have OEM fogs, there will be zero wiring for you to use behind the dash, def get like 3 or 4 colors of wiring (so you don't go insane).
Only thing with wiring into the parking light switch is that is would be possible to leave them on when the car is off (which im not a fan of cause it can possibly kill a battery)

LunchBox04V
11-04-2008, 11:43 PM
ok, now it gets interesting.......

I was going to change the color of my dash lights, as per HeresMyMind, and Reason's posts. Well, I did not get that squared away, I just didn't like how it looked (had an extra set donated for mock up).

Here is the kicker.....when I took off the decorative ring around the guages, I found an interesting thing. The foglight switch had a blank there, but there was wiring running to the back of the blank. It matched the pictured connector above in this post. I then checked in the interior fuse box and there was a fuse in the Fog Light spot (could just be a spare). I looked under the hood, in the Main Fuse / Relay box. I did not see a relay for the fogs, but I looked at the wiring diagram, and I THINK that the relay is located somewhere else (other than the MF/R Box).

So, where would I find the fog light plugs under the hood? Where could I find the Fog Light Relay? I know that on my '93 Infiniti G20 (with no fogs), but it had everything installed. It was only missing the switch in the cabin, and the Fog Light bumper cover, with the fog lights (duh, lol).

What do you folks think? Help! lol

jonklein611
11-05-2008, 12:33 PM
If there's wiring there, the relay is prob under the dash panel. Fog light connectors would be attached somewhere nearby the turns / headlights. Sounds like you might have gotten lucky. Mine didn't have a switch, no relay, and no fuse.

The relay is mounted under the dash panel along with the illum module and such, it is not under the hood.

Ok. I will go have a look. I did the JDM headlight mod, and never found the Foglight connectors. Who knows! lol

jonklein611
11-05-2008, 04:55 PM
Easier to run you're own then. It's one wire to the fogs, and one wire from the fogs to the chassis.

jonklein611
12-01-2008, 09:12 AM
I also grounded the fog lights separately, this way I can know if just one goes out it's the bulb. If both go out, it's prob a power supply issue. Let me know how it goes for ya.

Sorry to revive a dead thread but I've got an unusual case involving fog lights.

When i bought my car (a little over two years ago) the fog light switch on the dash didn't work (doesn't illuminate or anything) but my fogs worked somehow by plugging a connector into the cigarette lighter (there was also a 15 amp fuse connected to that wiring in case that helps). I'm guessing the previous owner did some rewiring which i have no idea how to fix, so I'm just wondering:
where should I start to get the fogs working as they are supposed to? (ie press the switch on the dash to power the fogs)
also, to replace the switch (which i am assuming needs to be done) do i need to take the dash out? or is there (*hopefully*) a simpler/easy way to do it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Question #1:
Are they stock fogs?

Assuming this is a 95-99 Leg, the switch is 4 screws away from being loose. There's 2 above the steering wheel, 2 below, drop the wheel to it's lowest position, slide the plastic thingy out, unclip the switches from the harness. Then the switch can be popped out of the plastic thingy. It might just be the lights inside the switch are burnt out, so it looks like it is broken.

This sounds like a non stock install (maybe wal mart fogs?). 15A is typically what fogs are rated for. Let me know some more info, and we'll go from there.

Thanks for the info on getting the switch swapped
As far as i know, fogs were standard on 95 LS. Unfortunately, i don't have access to my car (UVA doesn't allow first years to have cars :smt013 ) so i'll have to get back to you with more info.
I'm pretty certain the physical button to turn on the fogs is disabled or unusable because it doesn't even click when you press it, but then again, it may be the crummy job the previous owner did.

There's an internal catch that captures the switch to lock it into the "ON" position. Sounds like the PO either broke / messed with it and didn't know how to put it back right. You can find them easily @ junkyards / someones always selling them on here or eBay / or the stealership. I'd say go for the junkyard, gives you practice getting that dash thingy out on another car. It's also possible the PO just didn't re assemble it correctly, so that would be even easier.

Ok so switch should be taken care of now.

I'm assuming you're familiar with the function of a multi meter and how to use one properly (if not, learn, it helps. )

First step would be to trace where the heck the cig. adapter wire goes. It's possible that it's just spliced into the regular harness to give it power. If that's the case, then it could be removed, and the stock wiring should work. Might take some time and effort but assuming all the components are there, then it should work. Fuse for fogs is under the dash along with cig adapter fuses and so on...

If it's NOT tied into stock wiring, that means the PO detached the fogs from the stock system and re wired them, then you'd have to find where they made the cut / splice. Then you could reverse what they did back to stock and get the stock switch working again.

Basic Trouble shooting:

"Jump start" the fogs direct from 12V (battery) to check that they do work. (Make a tester lead to give you a 12V jumper).
If they don't work then, it's either a bulb or ground issue. Fiddle / swear / fix until working. :smt014

Check the Fog fuse to make sure it's good
If busted / discolored, replace

check to make sure you're getting proper voltages @ the switch.
if not, you've got either bad wiring or a bad relay

Check the relay when you turn on the working switch. (you should hear a click coming from near the fuse box when you turn off the switch)
I'm not 100% which relay is the right one, as I just have one that I "installed" (it's wedged in the under dash panel). But they are cheap and easy to replace on the stock harness. Pop old one out, pop new one in. Consult your manual for which relay it is.

If that all works, then you should be good to go!

Shouldn't be too bad, esp since your had the fogs from the factory.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
