Hi, Today i was in my spare parts bin and came across a spare Hazzard light switch couldn't help but notice that the button is only painted so i tried something :P

So heres to my First DIY!

Step 1 : Remove cup holders and the two Screws that hold them in.
Step 2: Carefully Remove HVAC bezel by lightly prying careful not to break it (Note first time i did this i got a Flat head screw driver and a old shirt and pried on each side.
Step 3: Unplug the hazard button
Step 4: Then remove the Two Phillips screws on the back of the HVAC Bezel that hold the button in place
Step 5: tape off what you want to Leave the Black color ( I'm a fan of how i did mine but be creative try something new!
Step 6: Use a Scotch brite Scour Pad for what you want red
Step 7: Place the button module back in bezel, install two screw to fasten it back in place, Plug it back in, then snap the Bezel Assembly back in the dash, and put the cup hold holders back in and screw that back with the two Phillips screws.

Also anything and everthing you do is at your own risk, Beware!

Enjoy! I'll try to get some photos of it installed here soon

What exact product did you use to do this?
You mention Scotch Brite but they make several products.

EDIT...I now see it...I understand...lol...Its pre painted black...

I'm pretty sure it will, I haven't felt like taking My car apart yet to install it haha.

Thats the only part about doing this that I am worried about.
And I can't find my spare one which is kind of annoying.

Great little DIY. I would probably use a glossy red for mine.

As matty said, All your doing is Taking off the black paint. It's red with a coat of black on top so all you do is is taking off the black But you could do a clear coat or something like that actually now that was mentioned i might try that if i get a Little bit of time this week.

Looking good everbody, If anyone needs a spare buttons i could try to get some :D

I'll to double check mine to see if I can do that. What about taking all the paint off and putting a bio-hazard sticker on it? Would definatly be different, maybe even keep friends from pushing it when you are driving.

how much scuffing did it take to remove the black? looking at mine and it seems to be black plastic

I used a sanding sponge, and it started coming off immediately. When I tried what the OP used, it took quite a while to see any of the "red."

So....What all lights up on these sanded units?

Everything red lights up. the button is made out of a "thin" red plastic that allows light to pass through/illuminate it. The manufacturer paints it black with the exception of what they want to light up/glow. I don't see scraping off all the black as a problem or an issue with night driving since the red is pretty light and easy on your eyes for night driving. I had a Pontiac Sunfire that they did something similar with the HVAC knobs - they had a rubber cover on them that could be removed to have clear knobs.

Same with the 98. I got a button from a 95 that had the red plastic. My 98 had black plastic.

I put a red LED in my button and it glows like a red hot coal at night.

I just did this, myself. I was taking my console apart to paint the trim, and the hazard switch had to come out. I remembered that it had gotten all scraped up when I hit it with my key to turn it on in my first Legacy, so I figured, "what the hell?" So, I grabbed the brillo pad I use for doing the dishes, and started in. three minutes later, BAM! I got a sweet-looking hazard switch.
