I thought it depended on production date? A lot of 99 models were a bit mixed as they transitioned into the new EJ25 design.

Somebody with more firsthand knowledge on the issue might be able to tell you how to tell the heads apart.

There were late 99's with phase II shortblocks, but the heads were still ej25d.

^ I have heard of SOHC 99's as well but in anycase, the pictures above are clearly a DOHC

Sure, Forester and 2.5RS got the sohc 2.5's in 99. Now a 2nd gen Legacy with that engine, I've never seen one put there by the factory.

I guess with everyone posting, if they wouldn't mind answering a question as well.

Trying to save my sisters car from being sold to car max. It's a 1999 Legacy GT with a DOHC EJ25 that has a blown head gasket.

I would normally just go ahead with the head gasket replacement, but these motors typically aren't all that expensive and she's put about 162k on it...with not the best maintenance over the course of her owning it.

Just thought I'd see whats out there as a possible alternative to fixing the head gasket and driving it up - replacing the motor with something lower mileage might be a better bet I was thinking.

I found a SOHC w/ 112k but from the sounds of it that would be way too much of a hassle for the worth.

Anyone know of a DOHC 2.5L in SOCAL or have a recommendation?

Not necessarily, GrayGuy swapped one in. You'd rewire the engine with your old harness and sensors.

I'd PM him for any tips (and if you go that route, please document the swap!)

One thing to note is the 2.5 SOHC's had headgasket issues in the early years as well. A more common swap on this board is swapping in a 2.2 sohc. Sure you lose about 30hp but you gain reliability and a little fuel economy.
