Just wondering... Clear timing covers

Ok, so before you all think I'm joking or just crazy, I really am curious about these. I have seen them for Toyota motors like the 4AGE, 7M, and 2J motors along with Honda's and others. I know it would being kinda ricer, but thought I would see what you guys thought...

Maybe they have them and I just have never seen them, I just thought it might be kinda cool... The ricer in me coming out I guess... haha

I don't consider them ricer, in fact it would be nice just so one can check on the condition of the belt and pulleys from time to time. I just think subarus always manage to leak way to much stuff on the inside and outside of the timing belt covers which would render them useless and ugly on anything but a freshly built engine.

if one existed for my integra, i would probably get it. but if you want them for your subaru, go strait to Zaklee and see if they will make them! worse thing they could say is no...

Good points all around... I just think it would be kinda cool... I would think about having them made, but I would like to know if they interchange with the Turbo motors or not. If they did, they could maybe be marketable... The N/A motors not o much.... LOL...

I painted my cam sprockets with the idea to modify the stock covers with a clear sheet of some sort of plastic.
The idea of clear replacement covers (however cool) just wont happen because of the cost to get the molds made, it's in the ten's of thousands. I've looked into it

^ depends on how your making them, i would bet the bank that Zaklee did not need $10K+ molds to make any of the ones they have available. they just wouldn't be able to recoupe any of their costs considering the market for clear timing belt covers. I don't know how they did theirs, but i would be very interested to find out.

Get a sheet of clear Kydex and have fun. Thermomoldable plastic with crazy flame, chemical and impact resistances.

Grafton is right, there is a thread over on nasioc about this. Found it a while back when I was wondering the same thing. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1884549

Actually after looking at that thread, they already tried talking to Zaklee. Problem is that the covers do change for the different enignes like 2.2L, 2.5L, SOHC, DOHC, etc... Also they would have to make 3 separate molds, one for each part of our timing belt covers. The cost goes up quick, and there's not enough of a market for anyone to make them because it's just way too specific.

The nasioc thread does give some pictures of alternatives, or DIY options. Otherwise you can be as cool as Reason and just go without them! :grin:

We have to modify our stock cover on Toyota 5Ms. Carefully trim and then attach the clear bit on the inside with epoxy.

I don't beat my car up nearly as bad as used to. I could probably take my covers off and live like that and be perfectly happy. Hell.. probably give me peace of mind being able to see the belt and pulleys easily since I get more worried as the car gets older.

You could take the existing covers, cut out a window, and screw+epoxy a clear sheet in place. It's not as slick as properly molded covers, but it does the trick.

thats why you gotta do a good mold and a few of the covers to sell to offset the cost. nothing good and unique is cheap
