View Full Version : I messed up my timing today

Im kinda (really) in a bad position here. I was changing out my timing pullys in a ej22 from an engine with only the one right side back timing cover. this gave me one correct place to line up timing. but the others i marked on the metal and lined up the marks on the belt. I have done this before and it worked with no problems. this time it didnt

It will turn, but not fire at all. Now im unsure what exactly to do. I dont have a compression gage to see cyl 1 to get to top dead center. I really dont know which marks to go with or how to get everything back in timing. I hoping that there is a process to get both cams back in order.

also mayb notable.. when i tested it, i had the radiator pulled.. dont know if that might throw something off somwhere.

Umm... I'm not understanding what you did? You changed one pulley, on one side, without doing the rest? I dont see how you could do that without doing the whole thing...

Subaru's have timing mark on the pulleys and the backing plate covers. If those are aligned right, you should not have a problem. Post a pic if you can so we can see whats really going on...

Redo it and see what happens. When I changed my timing belt for the first time I screwed the timing up and had some sort of piston valve contact. After I put it into time it ran like a top.

yeah i was kind of trippin out at the moment. Thats exactly what i did and it was fine. Im still having a high pitched whining noise that is consistant with speed.. this was the problem i was trying to tackle in the first place.

Remove the timing covers and go buy a mechanics stethoscope and listen to idle idler and find out where it's coming from. Also listen to your alt and power steering and AC. Could be anything. Stethoscope is cheap and easy to use. Could be a belt that's loose if it's a whining noise.

+1 a stethoscope will help a ton. In a pinch you can use a screw driver touching the part you want to listen to android the other end to your ear.
