I'm looking at this B&M knock off and I have a 97 Outback Wagon so I was looking at this one here but was unsure if it fits?

That should fit fine.
Look in this link:http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=24714
If your shifter looks like the first picture in my post, it'll work. If it looks like the second, it won't.
But I'm 99.9999% sure all 97s in stock form are the first one.

Yeah I can't remember and it's getting a bit dark to pull the whole cover off to check but I will check in the morning but I'm pretty sure it's the first one.
having said that do you know where I can find some decent shift boots?

redlinegoods (http://redlinegoods.com/), I have not seen or felt their product personally but they seem to have some pretty good reviews. They are also a vendor on here.

If found the throws on this particular shifter to be a bit too short for my tastes. I much prefer the stock lever than I shortened with a grinder and die.

I don't know part of me feels the stock one is fine and part of me wants to see how the short throw is.. but seeing how notchy Subaru shifters are it seems like it would be more effort with the short shifter?
having said that I was looking at the link that 02 legacy posted and I did not know you could put a shift boot on the E-brake.
Also I forgot to say you know the plate that holds the shift boot on the underside? I think one of the pins or whatever that holds it to the underside broke so the whole shifter plate sags.. might be in part of my floppy shifter. It's been awhile since I last looked but is that a replaceable part?

The plate that holds the bottom of your shift boot is made of plastic and attaches to the underside of the missing trim panel. It isn't in that picture as far as I can tell.
Also - that's a crazy looking shifter, I've never seen one like that before.

yeah I did not take a picture of that part but i saw at least one of the little pegs are broke which will explain why the whole part sag over when you do a 1-2 shift. When I replace the boot i'm just going to use some plastic adhesive to hold it in place.
I was talking to a person on Legacy GT and he has a 97 GT and he says his shifter looks the same way.
