Subaru Debuts FA Turbo engine

Looks like there's a turbo coming back to the Legacy after all. I doubt it will only be mated to the CVT like the article suggests though. There's not much of a market for that.

Holy shit...96HP over the normal FA20.

Cant wait to see what they do with the Legacy and the new WRX(in 2015).

The current Legacy now runs on the FB engine. Wonder if they are gonna swap that over to the FA or maybe just FA for the GT model when its reintroduced.

FA engines make 100 HP per liter. So that is 160HP and if the turbo system has that big of a change on a 2L, should put it near 230-250 range stock.
STi will get something like this or maybe something with a bigger displacement/better tuning.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Maybe 2.0 or 2.2L with a bigger (more CFM) turbo.

The future is small displacement turbocharged engines. They never have really been a "big displacement" company.

No, they're preserving their future. Governments all over the world (and especially the US) are passing laws that will require the average mileage of an automaker to rise significantly over the next 30 years. Subaru is being on the ball.

Besides, if they can do what they did with the Impreza and make the WRX/STi lighter, a few less HP won't matter and it'll be more fun to drive!

Mark has a good point also, Japan has an edge on small motors then the USA. Everyone wants a 572 BB in their hotrod, but you can make crazy power with any good engine, even if it's smaller.

I'm still waiting to see if Subaru is ever going to do a Hybrid or an Electric car. The only NEW car I'm planing to buy will be the Ecno box Tesla when they come out in 4-6 years... So Subaru I think is gearing up for this type of sales.

The most optimum Subaru hybrid would be the Diesel Boxer plus two PMAC motors supplementing the AWD setup. May be heavy but it can be lightened through composites. Or could run the rear with Elecric motors and the front with the boxer diesel. Batteries can be ran down the middle or in a flat "Tesla" style like its done on the Model S.

Subaru can do it. Just gotta do it right. (Plus Tesla is technically working with Toyota so...)

97-98 was 137HP
99-01 was 145 HP

Unless you're talking whp, which the 2.5L didn't put 165 to the wheels.

More recently, the 2.5L was putting out 172 HP and had a much better power curve than the phase I engine.

My point was more comparing them to the 2.5L engine. I've driven a few 2.5s and they don't feel that much stronger, except at high RPMs where the 2.2 heads really restrict the engine.

Besides, peak numbers only tell a small part of the story. Everyone thinks the Prius is completely underpowered because of the paltry peak HP number, but it has tons of torque and very good throttle response, so it feels a lot peppier than the numbers look on paper.

All this hybrid AWD talk has me thinking. Copy what Porsche doing. A hybrid AWD system that has no batteries and feeds power to the front wheels (electric motors).

Subaru could do this in the BRZ (and maybe future cars) and not totally ruin it. FA engine sitting nice and low and pushing power to the rear. Electric motors pull the front along and not getting in the engines way.

haha... I had a 97 L and it was peppy, but not as fast as my GT thats for sure! However, they are not that bad...
