A colleague of mine at work and I were reminiscing about "the old days" of computer gaming. You know - where you played games with 4, 16, or a whopping 256 colors in VGA mode on a DOS pc.

What are some of your stories? What are some of the fond memories you have playing old pc games? (Mac users, feel free to chime in if you played games on an old Apple IIc or similar legacy computers.)

I remember going to the Software Etc. store at the Cross County Mall in Yonkers when I was growing up and buying pc games there. If I remember correctly, I wanted to have an Amiga to play the really cool games, but I had a Tandy 1000HX, so I only had a few options that were compatible or playable enough. Still, I can almost remember exactly what the store looked like, the smell of shrink-wrapped pc game boxes, floppy disks, and air conditioning (yeah, those stores were kept cool). It was a different environment, and honestly a different time back then.

...and then there's playing the old games. Honestly, I don't know if some of the new titles can touch the amazing qualities of the old.

Confession: I have a shrink-wrapped copy of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (5.25-inch floppy). Haven't dared to open it yet.

The big spider always killed me in Castle unless I died in a water trap.

Never did beat that game.

Never really played Runescape much, but if it was from the mid-to-late 90s then we'll let it slip in too. I was thinking more like the old-school videogame days... when you had to go to a computer game store like Software ETC or WaldenSoftware to find computer games for an Atari ST or Commodore 64, or a Tandy (or dare I say it, Amiga )

Sheesh, the Amiga was the old-school multimedia pc and arcade gaming pc. Who here owned one?

I remember playing Mines of Titan, Starflight, Wing Commander (all of them), and the old Sierra RPG games.

I had an Amiga, but not when they were new.. I bought my first Amiga 500 in 97 or 98.. At the time, I had a TI99-4/A and a Panasonic FX-1650, which was basically the same as the Tandy 1000TL since Panasonic made the computers for Tandy at the time.
