The auto version from what I read is 4.11 however how are the axles from that diff to the axles on a 97 outback? Do the axles need to be swapped?

I dont know about the axles but the flange is different from yours. You could always swap flanges with your old one though.

Should be the same. I swapped in an 05LGT diff carrier assembly on my 98GT and required no axle swap

The axles should be the same. I'm changing mine from a 4.11 to a 3.9 out of a 99 OBS.
