I love my new turbo, but I cant stay in 24/7 rally mode.

I just got a 99 legacy gt swapped with a 03 wrx and exhaust. It is quite loud at idle it sounds awesome, i used my phone db meter its like 88 at idle so quite loud. I really want to just tone it down a little bit. the Car is tuned so my worry is that If i modify the exhaust with a resonator or alternate midpipe or something I risk blowing something up. I am new to turbo's and I want to keep it pulling strong. I did not perform any modifications this is my 2nd day of owning the vehicle. It runs really well, pulls hard when you want it to it is just to loud for me.

Just change your muffler to a stock STI muffler and throw a resonator in their post cat.
It will change the sound very nicely and won't affect the flow characteristics of the turbo because it's a 2.5" outlet as well. Resonators don't effect the flow characteristics either, just helps to knock the bark out of the exhaust.

what year sti exhaust should I be looking for? my car has the front 2 cats deleted. So i am unsure if the third and final cat is in the magnaflow catback, but I know it is after the last 02.

I haven't even had a chance to jack the car up to change the oil yet so I don't know how much room I have available I have no experience with exhaust myself I was hoping I could possibly drop the midpipe and take it to an exhaust shop to have a resonator put in.

from a local subie forum. I realize magnaflow is made to be loud should this quiet it down a lot? I may go for this and pay to have the mufflers swapped

Hmmm.... Usually you put the last O2 after the converter. Having a resonator welded on the midpipe would also solve the problem. You probably have the cylindrical muffler, I prefer the oval ones better because they are more quiter.

Also your exhaust have a bottle neck with 3" downpipe but 2.5 catback. Just saying, In the future you should match it with 3" piping and have more power.

yea I know that it is a bottleneck unfortunately my next muffler may most likely cause more of a bottleneck, unless I go with a resonator in the mid pipe. my decision will come after i actually see what type of piping I have because it sounds sweet but it does give alot of rasp when you get on it. there may be a cat in my midpipe before the o2 I haven't ever had or modified my exhausts before so I will feel better once I actually look at it and see what's going on.


... I currently drive my 99 tercel after midnight in respect to roommates. I want to retain power but I wouldn't mind having a quieter exhaust that way my 99 swap would actually be a sleeper, as it looks stock.

I am reading up and the ultimate would I am finding is a Borla hush or a maddad whisper, but that's dropping alot more then I would like to spend but would give me the full 3" remove the bottleneck, will see what I can find locally lightly used
