Someone let me know... ASAP...

Engine has 195k on it... said that he tried to install a new tranny/torque converter but the flexplate is spinning around in the bellhousing and not holding ATF (correct me if this is wrong)

Dude isnt even a Subaru guy... he just bought the car for temp transportation but has been throwing money at it and now his primary car is fixed.

No paperwork so the shell would have to be cut in two and sold as scrap metal or sold as a track/offroad project shell.

The engine alone isn't worth that, so if you want it, swap in a different auto or a 5-speed and drive the dang thing.

I was looking to get the whole thing for $650... and there is no title so I wouldnt be driving it anywhere... it would just be for the motor.

Do it!

That seems a bit steep. But if you're really willing to undertake it, by all means, it'd be a cool project.

Dude, there is a thing called "lost title" you can file for. I'm not sure how it works in CA, but here in WA you can do that.

Also, if it's in his name, all you have to do is go to the DMV and get the work done there.

Seems like a good deal for $650! I would deff try to get a lost title for it at that price and then you can drive it to your heart content!

I have been talking to the tuner that I am switching too and he isnt thrilled about the EJ22t as he seems to think that aftermarket options are limited.

Correct me if I am wrong... but I would essentially be looking at a WRX 2.2 stroker kit for internals correct?

I didnt have enough time to get into all the questions I had but:

Obviously this is an OBD1 car... Obviously the full long block cannot go into an OBD2 car and pass smog in CA... But could I build up an EJ22t short block/internals and swap BLOCKS in the 04 wrx OR my 99 legacy 2.2L keeping the upper half engine and wiring the same as the WRX or 99 legacy?

If I did that, could I put the EJ22t heads either on my current motor (Non turbo phase 2 2.2L) OR ontop of the 2.5 high compression motor that I have been looking for over the last few months?

What about both cars having a phase 2 4eat... would that mate to a EJ22t? (I am doubtful)

I am hoping that this block could somehow make it into BOTH the legacy and the WRX if needed. Obviously

Sorry for not searching but I am heading out there tomorrow morning to take a look at it.

So the ej22t would work in between WRX heads just fine, and bolt to the phase II tranny (you only use the topmost bolts and lower studs). But what I'm saying is you can get an ej22t for about $350-400 if you look around for a bit. That and the hood/bumper are the only things unique about that wagon. Electronically as your tuner said isn't tunable without huge hassles or a $$$tandalone. Since you don't think you could apply for a title my feeling is you're paying $$ for a cool but obsolete shortblock.

You do know that you can use just about any JDM motor in it if you wanted to right? If I remember right, all motors till about 98 in Japan are OBDI... But I could be wrong... I know where a JDM Forester STI half cut is... LOL...

Good info here. I think I am better off to wait for a clean title turbo wagon... I have seen them pop up for less than $2000 all the time.

price is a little steep if all you want is the worn out closed deck block. If you were thinking about just strait swapping the 2.2t motor, i would just tell you that you are wasting time and energy. the 2.2t heads flow like poo.

do you have an actual plan? what do you want other than the coveted 2.2 block that always seems to lead to more problems than solutions...

This was focused around building an engine for the legacy which I decided would be to keep my phase 2 2.2 heads and get a EJ251 for cheap and do a high compression build.

I have been looking for that engine over the last few months but now I am wondering if there would be an option that would be verisital between both my Legacy and the WRX... which I dont know if that is even conceivable.

Like COULD I get an EJ255 or EJ257 instead of a the EJ251, make sure the internals are solid and put it in my NA legacy under my 2.2 heads IF NEEDED? I mean yea it would be overly built considering it is a Turbo block in an NA car... but would it work?

I ultimately want to have a spare engine (lower half) in my garage that I could put into the 04 WRX or the legacy if needed.

Legacy has almost 250k miles on it and the WRX has 155k... it is a coin flip as to which one might go out if either.

Edit: I just reread Garrison's post in the thread I linked above.

If my 99 2.2L with rod knock has WRX forged internals... maybe I just find my EJ251, and swap it for my 2.2L then rebuild the 99 2.2L as a possible backup in case the WRX motor goes out.
