View Full Version : Speedometer sensor or gear difference?

Okay, long story short when I put my '97 2.5GT MT trans into my '98 L automatic car my speedo was off a little bit because of the tire size from 14" L tires to 16" GT tires.
Then I went bigger on tire size, causing an 8.5% difference to the tire size native to the GT trans.
NOW, I swapped in a trans SUPPOSEDLY from a '97 Outback, but it was cable clutch equipped. So it's a '96, correct? It IS a 4.11 trans otherwise I would not be able to drive it given my stock AT L rear diff (4.11), but my question has to do with speedo gear.
According to http://opposedforces.com/parts the part numbers are different for gears but not sensors across the 2nd gen MT Legacys, so which one do I have? Is there a list of different gears for different vehicles/tire sizes?
Reason I ask is, my speedo is pretty much accurate now, even with my 215/65R16 tires.

If it's a 96 Outback, it's a 3.9FD, IIRC. Perhaps there was some weird crossover with the hydraulic clutch in 96 or 97...

What's the tranny code for the "outback" tranny? I really don't think it is a 97 if it's cable clutch. You could only get cable clutches in an outback in 95 (the 'fake' outback) and 96, with the 2.2.

Lol. Don't feel bad, the USDM 94 LGT looked just like the foreign turbo wagons, in almost every way but the engine.

Code is this one (actually ABCA but I've heard that might be a typo on the site):
US Legacy Outback MY95-96 TY752VABBA 3.545 2.111 1.448 1.088 0.780 N/A 3.416 1.000 4.111 Viscous (4kgf) Open
Just a silly thought.... if it WAS a 3.90 trans, and seeing I have a 4.11 rear diff.... wouldn't I have noticed an issue by now since I've been driving it for two weeks?

I would think you'd have noticed an issue right away, and then shortly after, no power to the rear wheels.

If it's the wrong ratio, you need to swap that rear diff ASAP! Your center diff is taking up the slack for now, but it'll be overheating while doing so...Anyone's guess to how long it'll last.

Hmm after doing a little digging, I found this:

Looks to me like your transmission code was available in the MY1996 Legacy Outback w/ 2200cc engine produced between June, 1995, and May, 1996.
MY1996 FSM says Outback model ( * ) w/ 2200cc engine and manual transmission, has Front and Rear reduction gear (differential) ratios of 4.111.
Now we all know."
Hmm a 4.11FD tranny attached to an EJ22 from the factory. Cool!

Interesting. I wonder what that was like...
Of course it probably was necessary with all the extra rotating mass on the bigger outback tires.

yours is a 4eat? Cus the 95 Outback 5mt is supposed to be the same, based on the build dates I reposted.

No, but my 95 was built in 94. And the 95 FSM makes no mention of any 4.11FD tranny in any Legacy model. I'm guessing June of 95 was the earliest build date of MY96.
Also, my vehicle is not raised roof. It's only really talking about the raised roof models.

I didn't catch the stepped roof part initially.

AWESOME, thanks guys. So I should be calculating my tire size difference from a '96 Outback. THAT'S why its a lot closer now.
Now, just gotta worry about that whining I hear through the firewall in 4th and 5th gear..... Thought it was my Group-N pitch stop so I swapped that out for a stock one, but the noise is still there, just not as loud. Main shaft front bearing I'm guessing.... but at least everything else has been cured, noise and shifting-wise.
