Ok, so I get a call tonight at 11:30pm, tonight from my brother. Hes camping and he never calls that late and my ass just feel asleep watching the Borne Identity. His wife who is at work got a flat tire...

So reluctantly I go to fix it... I get there and what do you know, it flat as hell with a nail in it. Ok, toss the spare on.... Yeah, nice thought... It had 14psi... Not even enough to get their mini van to the gas station...

Long story short, my ass takes it back to my shop from her work (the tire), I fill it and then fix it for her. I dont mind helping my sister in law, but WTF bro?! Why cant you make sure the spare has air!!!!!!!

So, for those of you that own a car, I'm assuming that's 99.99% of you on here, make sure you have a spare tire filled with air! :smt021

No joke guys, I feel no simpathy for people, even more so car guys that dont have a spare tire thats usable. If your soooo busy stripping your interior to make your car 'light wight" you cant put a spare it, your a dumb ass...

Now if you take it out at the track, yeah that makes sense or you have a hot rod and you dont even have rome for one, ok that is passable. however, 95% of the cars on this forum are street driven cars and there is no reason to make sure it's in good shape.

I yelled at my brother today for it and he said he's gonna take care of it. To all you guys that are married and your wife drives without a good spare, that is about the most stupid thing I have heard! Every man should do what ever they can to make sure their wife is safe! That includes a spare tire that works!

Every car I have has a spare... Even the JDM Pulsar has one in the trunk... Working on fitting one to my flatbed trailer also...

My wife has a full size spare underneath her Grand Cherokee, and it gets filled up every so often. Easy to do since it's outside of the car.

If you're driving the car to the track, pull the spare out in the pits and go do your race car thing. :razz: It's not likely that the weight savings from ditching the spare are going to make you whip someone's ass on the street, and you're ****ed if you puncture a tire or nail a pothole.

It takes what, two minutes to check your tires and fluids? Yet a ton of people can't be bothered to do that, let alone attempt the monumental task of lifting up a hinged panel in the trunk to check the spare. Washing the car and vacuuming the interior? Take a second to check things. Filling up your tank? Check your tire pressure so you're not pissing away fuel money due to decreased fuel economy.

Grafton, I did sense a little sarcasm, but this is no joke, something people just dont even think about. I have had 3 flates on my BD in the last 5 years with one being a random blow out at 70mph. I had 3 flats on my Silvia in the 3 years I had that car. As well as a number of others on other cars.

I once had a flat on my 67 Chevy and had no spare. I now have 2 for that truck when hauling a big load. The big thing is to make sure your lady's are safe and know how to change it if needed. AAA might not be an option....

Make sure you drop it down and oil the mechanism too. Because it's outside, that drop bolt likes to seize up and that's no fun.

Now this is good advise! My Toyota came from Main. Even though it was only there 2 years before the guy moved here, a few things got rusty. That crank thing for the spare tire was one of them. I had to use a cutting torch to get the spare out. now the spare in is the bed... One of the things on the 'to do' list.

I have one that came with my Subaru from the dealership. It can pump up basketballs, bicycles, etc too!

My '82 Dodge Ram had the spare underneath the bed and had a rusted frame on it. Thankfully I never had to use it, but I did pull the tire out because my grandpa gave me a set of 5 rims for a birthday present, that way the spare tire matched the rest. I know it doesn't apply to this time of year, but depending on where you live a set of snow tires would be a good idea to have stored in the garage, too. I picked up a set for that truck for $50 a pop (with rims). Saved my ass more than once driving icy roads in Montana.

Which brings you to the next question.. why the hell doesnt EVERYONE has a special 'tool kit' in their car with a ghetto 12v pump, and some other basic necessities. Glad i do!

I love how 99% of cars have spares mounted UPSIDE DOWN. Yeah, who is going to remove it to check the air. Out of all the auto places I've worked, no one has EVER checked the spare on a customer's car unless its a truck, and its dangling under the vehicle with the valve stem pointed down. Hell, half the techs don't even have the correct tool to check and fill air on inside dually tires.

That said I always check my (full size) spare when I check the rest.

And I have two space saver donuts that are doing me no good sitting in storage. Never had a flat in ANY car I've owned until I lifted my Legacy. Glad I did the right thing and got a 5th wheel/tire to match.

It's always a good idea to pull the spare out and check it over. The '99 Outback we use for a shuttle at the shop I work for had the tire separate. Only noticed it when it was pulled out to be used :eek:
