i havent decided yet if i want to get coilovers or legacy struts with lowering springs for my outback
has anyone done struts and lowering springs, good or bad outcome. i live in NE ohio so i'll have to deal with snow so i dont want to go stupid low but i still want to look good

I spent months on this forum thinking the same question...search it out.
I choose struts and H&R for quality of ride. I still have more ground clearance than my coilover'd WRX.

ok did u change/swap anything else like gearbox crossmember, other crossmembers,or a steering uni/knuckle?
im also on subyclub they were telling me to change/swap to lower it properly these and many more things that sound like a pain in the arse lol so i was just wondering if u did any of that or just struts and springs.

I have a '99 Legacy Outback, and I just picked up some KYB struts, and some B&G lowering springs, i'll let you know how it works out

to lower it properly.
You do have to change all those parts.
If not, just get springs and struts to suit a Legacy - or coilovers and dump it.

Just did the legacy struts w/ lowering springs on it, and it is slammed, it even rubs a bit in the rears, but it is easily remedied w/ a lil hammering on the inner fender lip to fold it back up

Nice, I swapped my tires/rims for 225/45/17s 45mm offset and have zero rubbing. I plan to do some of the "geometry" corrections. First will be the Rear Camber Bushings from Whiteline http://www.whiteline.com.au/product_detail4.php?part_number=KCA399 as my alignment numbers were only off there.
I've bookmarked the other items for when I do my Tranny Swap....hopefully.

well, given that we have AWD, and that our cars are still higher than a lowered Honda, i don't see it being that big of a deal....but you never know

yeah i know what you mean. and last winter wasnt bad at all so maybe nxt winter wont be bad idk
ive always said the best car to lower in NE Ohio (or where ever theres snow) is a subaru because AWD lol

ran in to a problem today.the steering took a sh$t on me when got on the highway changed lanes and almost hit a car then the median before i could correct it an pull over. anyone have an idea on what could be rong? steering rack? also for the past two weeks theres been a bad grinding noise every time i come to a stop, its not the breaks and pretty sure its not a wheel bearing.could the axel be trashed, sound is coming from driverside front.
any help is greatly appreciated

^^ looked under it? If you're lowered and your geometry hasn't been fixed, you're probably putting a lot of additional wear on your balljoints, hubs and anything else that articulates, like your axle.

what would i do to fix this? would properly lowering it fix it i guess like chinging these?
"Front: Cross member spacers, dropped rear control arm mounts, longer cross-member bolts, longer steering coupler, longer strut bodies.
Center: Longer Pitch stop, Dropped transmission cross members, dropped rear shifter bushing (5mt), lowered drive shaft carrier bearing, heat shield spacers.
Rear: Cross member spacers, front diff mount spacers, longer cross member bolts, dropped front trailing link mounts, dropped sway bar mounts (BG/BD), longer strut housings"

You think this is bad?! Try being a Nissan guy and watch what all the stupid wanna be drifters keep doing to poor S13's! Now thats depressing!
Dropping an Outback, I could careless.... They are all over and I have even scrapped out a few over the years... That being said, if the car is not mine, they can do what they want with it.

Between the drifters and the recent bosozoku trend, Toyota dudes have it just as bad as the nissan guys. RWD corollas, cressidas, and celicas are being killed or ruined at an alarming rate :smt009
The way I see it, Outbacks can go either direction. They look aggressive lowered or lifted... anything but stock ride height is a move in the right direction. :dontknow:

I recently put regular Legacy struts on all 4 corners keeping the Outback springs and it's the best thing I've done in the 8 years of owning it. It brought the car down around 2 inches and with the firm spring rate of the Outback springs, the car handles awesome. I don't need 8 inches of ground clearance to drive around the city and on snow covered roads that are plowed most of the time.

thats what i thought! no use being 5in. taller than everyone else when all you do is commute on the highway to work and drive around in the city, also i love the look of a slammed outback!

well i go offroading all the time, i just pulled a trailblazer out of the woods then drove over where he was stuck a bunch of times. outbacks arent cars they are so much more capable and worth more than lowering, its sad when you could save your money and get a GT, ITS ALREADY LOWERED!

I agree with that however in North America all GT/L/Brighton wagons had mid-high roofs which are not "stepped roofs" like the Outback. In Japan RHD all wagons are stepped roofs. That is a appealing feature for many members.
Coming from someone whos 6'4" and drove a GT with a sunroof I can tell you that having an Outback with HEAD ROOM makes everything feel better.
The amount of work to install stickers/body cladding / bumpers is not worth the effort for most people. They would rather just pull out the spacer and toss in some wrx struts.
I love off-road aggressive Outback which is why I am slowly turning mine into one but the look of a lowered Outback is by the most aggressive style of subaru I have ever seen. Its screams "I can go anywhere and take corners!"
Just saying.. to each their own

outbacks are just the do anything car. offroading to racing it'll do it
and im 6'2" and my outback fits just right, the extra room from the raised roof really helps!
i have thought of buying another outback and lifting it a little bit but dont have the money now
