View Full Version : Peeling Trim Piece

Hoping someone has dealt with this before as all my searches are coming up empty handed.. The rubber trim at the top of both sides of my trunk windows is cracked and falling apart. It doesn't appear to be a water seal as I'm not having any leakage, but it still looks like crap. I'm sure it's beyond repair at this point as large pieces are missing and the metal is beginning to rust underneath. I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know what this stuff is called and/or where I could order some? It would be a fairly short piece as there is a seam on both sides where it meets the rear door. Every search term I try either returns weatherstripping components for the door seals, or products with a description too vague to tell if it's correct.

2. How does the new piece attach? is it self adhesive or do I need to order a separate glue / something else entirely? The old stuff will be a breeze to remove as it is so rotten I can just break chunks off in my hands and scrape the last out of the channel with a putty knife.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is for a 1999 30th Anniversary wagon if it makes a difference.

If this helps this is for a Gen 2 96+ Wagon.

http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/u ... r/molding/ (http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b11/type_24/body_equipment_exterior/molding/)

Usually you can just pick the rubber coating off to expose the chrome/metal trim and simply tape around it, clean it, spray flat black paint and you're done.

Just scuff the chrome and you should have no issues and it will only cost you $5

Hmm that looks close but I'm not sure if its right as the page says may 1998 for the latest model. I don't really understand the dates though so maybe that doesn't make a difference? That seems to show a diagonal front seam also, while its straight vertical on mine. Regardless, it looks like about $150 for both sides so I think I'll be taking you up on that spray suggestion.

My wagon is doing the exact same with these black strips. Im just going to rip off the center past of the trim and then just plasti dip over it.

It seems that we almost have the same problem matt. Anyway did you already fix this or at least have a remedy with it? The rubber trim of my truck windows are also cracked, maybe it is because it is old. But the thing here is, aside from rubber trim, it seems that my water seal has a leak that is why if it is raining, my passengers seats are getting wet. I'm looking for replacement at autoparts warehouse near us but still can't afford to buy some it.

Peel back the flaking rubber, use a razor if it's stubborn. Mask off the trim. Remove any rust with some sanding, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol to make sure it's clean and ready for paint. Spray it with black Plasti-Dip from home depot, it's a black rubbery coating/paint that matches the factory trim well.

My trim was bad at the bottom, but it was a $5 fix using this method. Maybe 15 minutes worth of work.

^ What he said...

Or you can use flat black spray paint as well... I have does that many times on cars that come into the shop.

Also, that pic that Chuk posted is correct. All the parts are the same from 96-99, and even some for the 95...
