I'm all about making things your own, so I respect that. And you should have no problem selling those headlights. I bet plenty of people would pay good money for those. Glad to see you're on sli now and keeping the car in the sli family!

Great start on it. You planning on repainting for the VIP look? I am interested in seeing where you go with it because that is what I am leaning towards VIP style with mine.

Yeah. It was his. No, you can call me Andrew. :smt002

Thanks. No, the color will not be Silver, White or Black like a luxury VIP might usually be. I'm kinda OCD and I could never live with the fact that under the panels and carpet would always be Spruce Green Metallic! It's going to be hard enough with the engine bay flat black but....I've got plans to help with that! I will be re-doing the entire car in the original color but, will be painting more items than from the factory...Side Molding, Mirrors, Door Handles, etc...
The main "VIP" aspect of it will be in the wheels 8 or 8.5" wide and the interior. Sitting nice and low already and rides great so my stance is juuuust fine.

Maybe it doesn't translate, grotty means dirty so since his car was so dirty we should call him matty2grotty.

I need to find myself a RHD wagon. I love how you're transforming the car to your own personal feel. Buying someone else's already modified car is tough to love, so taking out morrettes for stock headlights is reasonable. Can't wait to see how this turns out!

I never noticed the spoiler on the back before but im glad to see that the car will be taken care of again by another subaru driver. Cant wait to see where this build goes!!!

I more-or-less think that I bought some piece of mind with this rather than someone else's full on project. Engine (new), trans (different/refreshed), suspension and other maint. work gone through and a few cool bits to enjoy or sell. VIN #'s match on all doors but 1, current hood, rear hatch and both rear quarter panels (even though having been hit in the right rear at some point).

Yeah, the Liberal spoiler is a pretty cool piece to the car. It is fun to have it on there but, will probably go the way of the Morette's and get sold. The rear hatch has Cancer and I'm no body man so, a simple swap and a GT spoiler or something NOT fiberglass would be more to my liking.

Perfect scenario. Craigslist, posted mine "FOR SALE" or "TRADE for OB Hood with Scoop". I not only got the OB Hood with Scoop but, its OE Subaru, already flat black and Spruce Green underneath with the insulation and complete OE hood scoop and support structure. All that plus getting paid $50. Done deal! Couldn't have worked out better.

Spoiler removed (sanded and painted flat black already), cleaned and partially sanded most of the tailgate. Leaving some areas Green because that will be the color the car is re-painted when the time comes. I want it all flat black until then though.
Need another sunny day + enough time so I can complete the painting. :/
Liberal Rear Spoiler = the 2 side pieces have been removed, sanded and blended the best I could. Now only the big piece left. Hopefully it comes off OK so I can find it a new home out there somewhere!?

I was pumped to find this rear hatch at a local Pick-N-Pull. It was there each of the 3 times I went back before pulling it off. So glad it was still around. I cant wait for paint!!! I made the new hatch able to be fitted today and got the Liberal off the old hatch too.

Old hatch gone now that the spoiler was salvaged.

Tailgate swap all done. I wish the whole car could have been painted in this Trim paint instead of the gritty plain rough stuff it is. O well. Spruce Green will make its return soon! Loving this hatch and spoiler.....way more my style.

Next to come: very limited budget, purchasing a home. Once things settle down after that I will see what can be done!?
*Removal of front lip.
*Removal of the seats and carpet to clean and vacuum underneath
*Re-tint rear window and front 4 to match the rear side windows.
*Paint the WRX wheels.
1. If it ever warms up around here for long enough. :X
2. Color? TBD!

Thank you Reuben. That is certainly my goal with this vehicle. As close to OEM look, feel, fit and finish as possible with just a bit of aftermarket flare.
The grill and paint will be next to go/change! Might even think about selling the springs that are on it and raising it up a bit but, that decision will come well down the road when I get my wheel and tire package figured out and see how things shake out.

Finally got around to crafting this today! Been in the back of my mind for a while now. :smt023 I only have one and a half planks of wood left so...I need to figure out what I want to do from here. Maybe try and find the same brand again or...leave it as is and maybe put a sub or storage box on the carpeted section. One project always leads to another! :P

Puke dirty whiteish yellow (of the old bottle) was not a color I wanted under my hood.
***Next, I was sick of having red, white, black and orange on the back. Time for a change. In a perfect world I will do an all red and orange set but, seeing that the car came with the red and black corners I'll keep it going for a bit. And, they are such an b!t$H to take out I'm not rushing to tackle it.

They usually carry the factory tool kit. A pair of multi-grips (pliers), wheel wrench, a couple of spanners and possibly a screwdriver.

That's what is in mine. Unfortunately, the wheel wrench is the wrong size in my car. Replacing it soon, though.

Actually I have a tool box permanently in the back now so I've only got the wrench in there. People have been known to use the space for a sub but it looks too small to me.

Cleaner look but now it really looks like its riding a$$ low. The front lip being so low was making the proportions look better front-to-rear. Funny how doing 1 small thing can set off another list of things to think about sometimes! :X

I'm really liking what you are doing to this wagon!! Wish you kept the morrettes but since you say vip maybe time for projectors in the future!?! I really like the wood flooring you did for the trunk, and I mean like it alot!! Is it just that wood flooring that interconnects?? did you use wood glue to hold it together or do you have any brackets underneath to keep the section together?
also the engine cover, I always wanted to do this!! Thanks for the inspiration keep up the good work!!

Yeah, some projectors are in the cards for a future mod. Lower on the list for 200 of my dollars right now but I will certainly keep the JDM parts flowing in! Next to go is this grill before I really buckle down and save for paint. God what a daunting thought.
The wood floor is a tounge and grove style but, the stuff I used was pretty base line stuff. Nice but, pretty standard and no clip together or self sealing to it. The way I put it together right now is pretty ghetto with duct tape and wood dowels to support it. I fully intend to take the pieces back apart, wood glue them together and cut another piece of wood to glue to the backside for full support. Sounds like I did nothing when I list all the "I want to's" out like that :smt017
****Here was my motivating photo to do the rear wood and it also keeps me awake at night wondering if I should continue on with replacing the current carpeted section and finish it all off!?

Outback overhead console and dome light. Cut out the headliner as a template and just need to run power up to it and hopefully that roof support is available for use on the underside of the headliner otherwise I'll be needing to do some custom thinking on how to mount it!? :/ The Outback logo will be popped off and replaced with 1 of the many "LEGACY" center console/climate control emblems I have snagged off the 1st Gen Legacy's I've see at the junk yards.

Thanks rocketlegacy for the engine cover. Working really well!

Maybe in the future if I can find some but, I'm a rare breed and I like Amber lenses. Last night I thankfully realized that the lacquer thinner was starting to strip off the lense tint spray that was on the tail lights. Back to Amber I go!

I've been ruining my brain thinking about wheels these past few days. Here are some of the front runners so far. Que cheesy, cliche descriptive words..."VIP", "Style Wagon" with a bit of "Stance", etc... I just want it to look great and function on the road while being all that!

Whether a 7", 7.5" or 8" wheel I will go with a 205 tire I think. 7" is tucked in enough, 7.5" = my fenders are rolled already, 8" = the mild stretch should clear the fender pull.
So many different ways to go. No $2,xxx JDM, RARE, 1 off wheels for me. This is a daily driver and I just bought a house so that is where money will need to start going and savings for an R32 GTR when they start to become legal in 2 years! :smt007

Thanks. That's the good info I need for this process. I'm already rolled and pulled so a more aggressive offset and or 8" width could be done.

Audi A8 Replicas in 5x100 so the Jetta and Golf people can run them. They have been on the top of my idea list since I bought the car. 8" +45 might just fit in there perfectly.

You make a very good point. It's way easier for you to find a replacement down there so I will certainly be modifying my exhaust hangers and cutting a custom metal heat shield to go in the cut out on the rear lip for my exhaust. It was fine for 5 years, being only a CM or so from the bumper all round. But last year I has having a bit of trouble with the WOF (warrant of fitness) guys here, so I had to add an extra silencer into the exhaust. The muppets that did the welding fucked up, and made it so the muffler actually got pushed up against, and touching the bumper. Then it melted. So long as you have no contact, then you're fine.

Hey there, so you're using lacquer thinner to remove the paint?
Lacquer thinner to remove just the black spray paint that was all over the car. Not the OE Subaru clear coat and Green paint. That will be sanded and body work done later on.
Quite a time consuming process with the lacquer thinner only being effective for about 5-10 seconds after it is out of the bottle. Thankfully the black paint seems to be very weak and once it has been saturated it scrapes off with a plastic scraper quite easily. Sometimes it just takes off a layer or two and then what is left over can be wiped off with a lacquer thinner soaked towel.

Great - I am wanting to remove the white paint from my door side strips - it's all chipped up anyway, and there's black plastic underneath that will go with my "panda" theme.

Yeah. Lacquer thinner will be perfect for that I believe. It stripped off all the flat black from mine and left just the raw black plastic and did not make it white or discolored.

Update:
*Closed on my house last week so, that's a good and a bad thing for the Legacy. :/
1. Clean, warm, cozy place for her to sleep at night! (+)
2. Better working area for my projects to be completed (+)
3. A LOT less time for projects (-)
4. A LOT less funds available for parts (-)
However...
*I did snag some BG5 Side Skirts with SPATS off Ebay today.
*GTB Rear Bumper arrived last week (good condition, certainly use able)
*Floor Mats will come via UPS tomorrow.
Just sourcing some side molding and figure out what I want to do with my mirrors and then bodywork can start. She's pretty dinged up but, I'm gonna bring her back to glory! :smt023

Yeah! It's what really sold me.
Once I hack out those shelves on the right side there and get a better cabinet setup on the back walls it will be dialed in. Who knows, If I have the funds and/or stay in the house long enough I might throw in a storage lift...I think there might be room?
Huffer

A lift would be baller. They're not terribly expensive to buy, but you have to install them properly.
You could just move the shelves from the side, to the back, and then chuck on some plywood to make doors.
I bought a house a year and a half ago, and am still reworking the garage to suit my spaces... it's a tight fight for two cars, 4 sets of wheels and tires, plus all my yard equipment. I need a storage shed or a bigger garage.

Sadly, the garage revamp is about 38th on my list of things to do! :/ I would like to salvage what I can. I'm already planning to use the 60" vanity I ripped out of the master bath somewhere out there too!?
That shed you speak out I do have in the back yard...well worth it! All yard things and automotive things not in use will find their way in there.

I gotta get you the cash for those before anything. The wagon is feeling neglected and will probably continue to be for a bit. In no way will I let it fall to the wayside. This wagon is gonna be what I wanted it to be from the start no matter what.

Use the 60" vanity as a workbench. Nail/screw some plywood to the top, bam. Plus you have storage underneath for stuff like drop saws and bigger tools. Hang smaller tools like hammers and whatnot off hooks on the inside of the cupboard doors, put nails, screws, bolts etc into the drawers.

Me neither but still...i was on a killer roll till the house closed. :/ The car is filthy and still 4 different colors.
Yeah, I want them but, wont need them for months. I should probably hold off and allocate funds 100% toward the paint and body.

That's definitely why it hasn't found the curb yet! It fell a part a bit during demo but, nothing some screws and wood glue can cure.

Deal! If it makes them easier to "polish" or "chrome" then I'm all for it. Shaving just the side rail holes on my roof was one thing that I was going to run by you when the time came. Just the 8 that go through the roof for the posts, not the center strips.
BG5 Side Skirts and Spats arrived today. Tabs on the back look pretty good for the most part, maybe 1-2 broken ones and will need to replace the seal on the top of the skirt cause it is a little cracked. Overall....happy with'em! Gonna throw them on the shelf with next to the rear bumper tonight. :( So stinking busy I cant get a moment with the wagon to save my life. O well....it's not going anywhere and neither are all these goodies I'm picking up!

Awesome, nice to hear that the JDM GT-B rear bumper skin is a direct fit over the USDM beam. From my understanding, the mounting points of the rear spats are better aligned to the JDM bumper than the USDM bumper... I'm pretty sure it was Dead that had to slightly modify the bumper mount holes for his rear spats to fit on his sedan. Hope that you let us know how that goes.

Yeah, I was happy to see that it fit nicely with it too. There is 1 tab on the beam I need to bang out of the way a bit to get it out of the way of the cover at the top of the exhaust area....no big deal.
The SPATS are a direct line up with the GTB rear bumper I have (Test fitted, installing shortly). You can be sure I'll document the install and process. I've gotta get these damn side skirts on first which requires the drilling about 10 holes per side. Not looking forward to that but, it's just gonna be a case of "measure twice, drill once".

Only 1 small dent that can be massaged out. Old fender = 10 dents or some $#!t.
Replacing some doors soon as well due to excessive need for body work. Have the passenger front right now and might replace as many as 3 when it is all said and done. :-( Sad to see the #'s matching panels go but...the less body filler needed the cleaner and longer lasting job it will be. :smt023

Yeah, the rails had to go! The 3 center strips will be reinstalled and I've got a line on some that have naturally lost their black finish so it will be easy to polish up and add a subtle shine.

Robin notified me the other day that one of the local yards has a RHD Postal! I had to go grab some goodies that I needed or wanted to have as spares should anything ever go wrong. Damn rare/hard to find parts.
Wiper Arms
Windshield Cowl Shroud thing! *Big find, mine is cracked.
Front Door Panel Window Switchs - Driver and Passenger
Shift Knob
Shifter Indicator
Climate control *Mine is kind of sticky on the buttons so, this was a good find too.
Drivers side dash air vent (mine might be darker black and the dial is broke :( ...good to have an extra just in case. Couldnt get the passenger side one out, it cracked in the process.
$35.00!!

I've never been a fan of rail-less BG's, but the BK's smooth roof just seems to suit it, and you're doing it fucking right! Good shit man, good shit, I'm loving this project!!!

Totally agree. Rail-less bubble roofs look silly. They have to have rails. The US flat roof rails just seemed like an after thought by Subaru here and don't really fit the body lines.
Yes, you have all the JDM/NZDM goodies down there Rueben! I probably wont convert the door panels. I've got some US 98-99 Black door panels waiting to go in after paint and body is done. Someday it might be a fun upgrade.
Wheels and Tires (18x8.5....or wider!? ), Brakes (LGT or BH Fronts, BH Rears and Calipers) and hopefully making my current suspension work for a while longer with the wheel and tire combo I choose ("Stanced" just for a term to use to describe what I'm after) are going to be my most pressing goals after the paint and body.
I have a 2nd project on my mind and room in the garage to do it so diverting funds away from the wagon will be needed to make it a reality.

To each their own. I've just always felt like the roof rails were an afterthought. A bit to tall and thick and the way they are molded to roll down off the side of the roof with the curve didnt sit right with my need for symmetry.
BH or JDM BG rails on the bubble roof would be nice but, I've committed to a life with no rails!

yeah, yeah, yeah. It does kind of look like an after-thought now that it's mentioned but I think it would be a bit difficult to blend into the body with a flat roof! Regardless, it looks great! And it'll look brand new after Robin is finished with it! :smt023

No, I'm sticking with the OEM US Subaru climate control. The postal vehicles had the same style (knobs, buttons and dial) as the LHD US 95-99 Legacy's and I found a wrecked postal at a local yard I pulled the Climate Control unit off of...thats the one I will eventually swap over, no more sticky buttons!
Sorry to hear your troubles. To be honest that is why I'm not going to do it anytime soon...maybe years down the road. This car isnt goin anywhere!

Why would you want those stickers anyway? They are total visual clutter and I would remove them all from the S401 if they weren't so hard to get to (and I wasn't so lazy).
I can tell you why... It's the same reason I left mine on my Pulsar. It's JDM...
I understand why you dont care much for them at all. You have lived there for years so it's nothing new, if not annoying, for you since you have seen or had them. For us it's something kinda fun and cool since it's from Japan.
I've thought about it also, but only for the Pulsar...

Okay, fair point. I admit that I would like European taillights (with the rear foglamp) or 'Liberty' badge from Australia. But not enough that I would go buy any of it (again, laziness has a part in this too).

^^He beat me to it. Pretty much everything I would have said.
I get the same reactions and questions why I bought a RHD Postal Vehicle daily! :P
I've had 15 Cars, all Japanese and all somewhat or mainly JDM style related. I've held off for years and years, after many LHD US cars with buying things like power folding mirrors, parking pole, and yes, these JDM pieces of "flare"...this wagon I am going all out on with the way one might find it along side the road in Japanland! I'm even so nuts that I still can't talk myself out of swapping on/in a US Outback roof for it! :/

Why not just do a RHD swap on an Outback? I don't want to sound critical but that seems like less work than having to make your car a convertible and line up everything perfectly again. Lol
ags18
10-26-2012, 02:31 PM
Nah. I have no interest in RHD conversions and this wagon is done in another $2,000 or so.
It's a pipe dream...once it's not my daily driver anymore who knows what I'll get into with it though?

Really you only need to do the roof skin...
Huffer
10-26-2012, 03:11 PM
^^ yep, the structural parts are all the same. Only difference is the leading edge where the bubble starts... find a hit Outback, cut the roof skin off, cut out the Legacy roofskin, weld in the Outback and apply the correct roof rails (or not). And then paint.
Lotta work though...

Haha. I'm all good man. I always do what I want with my car.
Everyone has their own tastes. That's what makes this hobby fun!
I'm just sticking up for my decals. In my eyes it's no different than any other JDM Subaru piece added to the car. RHD in the US is rare and illegal till 25 years old. I LOVE true JDM vehicles Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan....all of em.
Sadly, I had my registration sneak up on me and don't want to waste what I paid but next year I will be getting a personalized license plate..."HOMAGE" or "TRIBUTE".
With this wagon being so reliable and practical I don't see myself owning another LHD car again.

99 OB Headliner. The original one in my car was dyed while it was still in the car by the old owner and after all this time has still not set correctly so when you wipe your fingers on it the dye comes off on your hand. Not havin' that! Plus, the cut out for the Outback Roof Console will fit up in there perfectly now.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
Roof Console mentioned above. Removed the "Outback" logo, re-glued on a 90-94 Legacy logo that came from the center console around the heater controls.

That's because the roads are so damn narrow. You probably also noticed that most cars have small lights on the front left and right of the hood that are visible to the driver. These help you know exactly where your car is on the road so you don't clip something or someone while driving down a 5-foot wide road... Those crazy Asians!

For the headliner, I'm doing the exact same thing for my wagon. Whats funny is that I have a 97 outback but it didn't came with that headliner/interior light w/sunglass holder. I'm going to install it tomorrow. You don't have the mounting plate for that console? It uses a different mounting than the regular interior light console

Yup. Got the bracket already and I've installed it. I used large zip ties and put some foam between the bracket and the roof support just to make sure it doesnt give me crap down the road!

For all that dont know..... This image is as a resuly of a nail in the tire finally let out all the air. Aaannnd....on the drive home after this happened my brakes failed on the highway. Scared the shit out of me but, I found that no lines were broken it was the Master Cylinder and Booster leaking where they join together. I was out of fluid but able to pump the brakes and get pressure. I kept my following distance GIANT and kept my left had on the E-brake the entire way home.

Ewww... cant believe how gross the car was on the interior, then again when i pulled the radio out and steering wheel i cleaned up some really nasty stuff. The previous owners beat the living crap out of the interior. Glad to see someone actually doing it the "right" way, but sad to see some rare parts come off the car. Everyone has their own likes and style though. As far as me... sure enough I got another Subi but not a legacy, just 04 RS as the market was slim picking for the last 2 months( been looking for another BE Limited Outback Sedan but no luck :( )

Yes, there were lots of parts taken off and changed but, they will be going to new homes/cars where they will be re-loved.

Im pretty sure that the front lip was made to fit from a 05+ Legacy GT or an STI Limited Front Lip. It was just on there with screws when I got the car. I might be putting it back on after paint...we'll see? And yeah, the bumper is a JDM BG5 front bumper, not anything US.

I will be running the USDM 98-99 Headlights and the Corner Lenses will be sprayed Amber. I'm a Honda guy deep down (flame on if you must...but, we are who we are!). Because the headlights are so short I may need to make my own wiper arms and blades but, that wont be too much trouble. I hooked them both up and they work just fine. Weird... Ah well, whatever floats your boat. Btw, they did amber-lens-indicator-projectors in japan btw. Very rare, but i've see a few grand wagons and gtb's with em. (you could also option the USDM style tails and garnish with the orange)
And regarding the intersection lights... you DO realise that you already have them on the car... Right now... Right??? The lamps either side of the fogs light up the footpath to the left or the right of the car, when the indicators are on. Or did you not know that? So please don't mangle that beautiful JDM faceligt bumper to add something the car already has!!!
