The beginning in 2005.

Right after I swapped it in 2007.

After some minor bodywork and new paint last november. And just to see if you're paying attention....

Yeah. It really is.

So my BG is a BPT swapped 1990 Protege 4WD. It's my reliable and fun DD. Probably not what you imagined when you read the title, I guess.

Okay, here we go.

Engine: BP26 1.8l DOHC turbo. Transverse mount.

Turbo: Stock IHI VJ20. It's really little. I could hybrid this with a VF10/8/12 cold side for a decent upgrade (hint). ;) One day I hope to run a Holset HY35 on it with Megasquirt. It's popular on these engines, and for good reason. FMIC.

Drivetrain: Made of GLASS!! All of it. :( No issues yet though. It does have a center VLSD with a 43/57 split. Open front and rear diffs.

Chassis: No rust! MacPherson struts at all four corners. Front has no subframe (this is different from the 2WD). Mazda's Twin Trapizoidal Links in the rear. They used these for a long time on 323s and Proteges. JDM front strut tower bar. Corksport rear strut tower bar.

Interior: JDM instrument cluster with local speedometer. Autometer boost/vacuum gauge. Carpet delete. Power nothing.

Exterior: EDM headlights. Recent paint.

Just added EDM cabin vents. Only the European ones can be closed.

Very nice man! My neighbor had one of these till recently. His was FWD, but he put in a GTR engine that was collecting dust at the local importer since no-one knew what it was. Thing was brutally fast, lol.

When I worked at a junkyard, the n/a version was about the funnest cars we'd get in still running. One wheel peel's for the whole parking lot, lol. After hours we'd rally them in the back and basically drive them to destruction. Good times. :)

Thanks man. There seem to be a lot of them still in WA, OR, CO. Very few where I am.

There is a guy in Shonomish WA with two GT-R swapped 4WDs. He rallies one and the other is for the street. His street car makes ~320 4WHP! Mine is nothing close to that.

Painted valve cover with new gasket.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/7565894028_c38df63c34_b-1.jpg

Also new spark plugs to fix a miss. #1 turned out to be oil fouled because of the valve cover gasket.

And perhaps most exciting of all, I fixed my AC!

I didnt even know about the Mazda GT-R's! Those are cool! Kinda like my GTI-R!

I like the build, it's something different.

Awesome, great to see a 4WD one of these in such good shape. Also a BP swap in one that hasn't been botched. Are those the glass EDM headlights? I always liked those. Never knew about the EDM vents, that's nifty. Even though I have arguably nicer cars now I still really want another BG Protégé.

Thanks for your comments. Yes those are glass EDM headlights. There is something about that chassis/engine/combination that is like nothing else.

Sorry, no videos. I don't even have a camera. :(

Well it was down for about six weeks with a bad miss under load. I took a while poking around at possible fixes I could do for free, but it wasn't until I bough and installed some new (and much better) ignition wires that the problem went away.

It's good now. I had swapped out the TPS to try and fix it, so today I adjusted it and it feels better than before the problem started. Yay.

It sure is nice to have my car back. I don't have to suffer my mom's awful 95 corolla anymore. Worst 4EAT ever.

Do you have any rear and rear/side shots of it? Still like the idea of these rides, just so different no one would see them coming! LOL!

I cant wait to finish my Pulsar because I know people are gonna see the hood and wing and poke fun, till they see how fast it is!

Update: it started consuming coolant about two months ago. I'll have to change its head gasket when I get time. Hopefully get some mill work done on the head while it's off.

Started labeling all the stuff attached to my intake manifold. Hope to get it off tomorrow. The exhaust manifold will follow, and then the head as time allows.

Time for a little upgrading?

1839cc
03-02-2013, 01:38 PM
Repair/upgrade.

The turbo head has the intake ports 75% closed 'to induce swirl' and 'improve low and midrange torque'. I want to mill that crap out, since I'm in a machine shop four days a week at school. I might also try to port match and polish if I feel up to it.

I have a wideband waiting to go in too.

it's looks are so boringly perfect! Even the color is ideal for making cops think "Okay, no way did I just see that going fast." Also, love the E30 wheels on it.

1839cc
03-06-2013, 04:48 PM
Thanks. Those wheels were a deal too!

I think I've been convinced to keep the bumps in the intake ports. Looking at the pictures again it's more like 25% coverage. Not enough to inhibit flow with my baby turbo. So the turbulence they generate probably helps me out after all.

Progress has been slow with life and such. I've got snow today, so I'm not working on anything outside.

Are you planning to do anything to hide/protect the intercooler?

1839cc
03-06-2013, 05:32 PM
One day.

I have a JDM three hole bumper that needs to be repaired and painted to match. I'll have to make a steel frame for it since there is no space for the fiberglass crash brace. Then I'll need to find a matching rear bumper and trunk garnish.

Well I need a tool to continue. I have a set of Taylor Thundervolt spark plug wires with 4" long boots in 6" deep wells in my head. I don't have anything to pull them out with. Any suggestions?
