After a crappy turn of events and losing my 08 production class wrx rally car, i ended up with this '98 Outback Limited to do a crunch time build to get ready for my 2013 season. And after hours spent on google, i can not find a single stage rally outback out there... and very few legacys in general. So i figured this might be a sweet treat for you guys. Thought i'd share!
This isnt a car i want to throw a lot of money at.. since i'll probably only use it one year, so im going to keep it cheap and basic and just run it in Open class.

Anyways enough with the BS and playing around with it, time to get serious about getting it prepped for stage rally.
Spent the day today gutting the dash out and replacing it with a WRX dash.
Did a little wiring that needed done, and called it a day for now.

Seems like every time i go to pack up and move, something falls into place here in oregon that keeps me around another year lol. So no hawaii yet...
Sold for forester quite sometime ago... still want another... But gotta finish some other cars first. Get my truck riding on 42's, pick up another 08 shell that i can actually register, this pos... etc.
You freaked me out at first BTW casey lol, then i realised it was you haha

Oh, what I would give to be able to build a rally soob!
You're trying to keep it on the cheap right? Forester XT suspension and some bigger AT tires are your best bet. It'll give you a nice 2" lift, plus stiffer spring/damping rates. Where are you looking to focus your $$ because there's a LOT you can do to the outback platform?

Planning on Forester suspension if i dont keep the stock. Being an open class car, it doesnt need a ton of money to be competitive. and im not going to spend any more than i have too since this car will only be used for a year, two at max.
my main focus for money right now is roll cage and the required safety equipment. Going to cost me $1500 bucks for the cage. which is dirt cheap for a full blown cage. The average person would spend 3000-5000. (it really does pay to be me haha) and the rest of the required safety equipment is going to run about another grand... I've got some money set aside for my seats right now i want to run, they will be the first large purchase here in probably 2 months, got a lot of other stuff to do first before i need to worry about the expensive finishing touches.
I got a wild hair last night/early this morning and decided to go start slinging some paint! Its about half finished right now, but heres a teaser shot!

Got the paint about 75% done, but im doing everything wrong with this paint job lol. Like driving the car while the paints still wet haha. or down gravel roads with out clear coat. haha So gotta redo a couple spots, and then shoot some clear, but its getting there. Atleast all the green is finally gone!! I even jammed it haha.
Absolutely HATE doing window tinting. But i got ONE window done :) I'll get the rest done tomorrow.

06-17-2012, 05:26 AM
It'll be caged soon! I just hope my cage fits it half way decent since it was designed for an impreza... lol. But i'll make it work one way or another.
Not a lot of pictures for this update.... but good progress.
All 4 door windows are now tinted.
Battery cut off switch is wired.
Back half of the car is gutted.
Paints basically finished.
going to pick up my wrx center console tomorrow and some forester suspension.
Ordering my Corbeau seats in 2 weeks, Then just got 18 more things to check off the required to do list, and we'll be ready to race!

btw ive seen 2 outback rally cars. one a sedan, the other a wagon. idk if you would call them 'stage rally' cars, but they were caged and had some very serious shit done to them.

Fun project but quick question: Why does a rally prepped Legacy need a WRX dashboard?

the dash was swapped to suit me and my needs. It was more of a comfort and convenience mod than a performance one. It's a better design vs the legacy dash for gauges, switches, looks, etc.

Went and picked up some Forester suspension tonight, installed the wrx center console, and picked up a bunch of required safey stuff tonight as well, 2 fire extinguishers, first aid kit, tow strap. My check list is down to 15 things to be ready to race... Getting there one little step at a time. Oh yeah... got a sweet new sticker too... ha

I'll find those pics. BTW are you converting to to 5MT?
Also, in my honest opinion the forester suspension is less than ideal. When I rally raced the best cheap suspension set up I saw was the plain ol legacy L. My had the exact same vs as me, and ever rally we were really close in times, then after he put outback struts on I started beating him by 2 seconds consistantly. The outbacks sit to high to corner well.the stock L or even the BD LGT springs are the perfect blend of soft and ride hight. That's just my experience in rally racing
MonstarMotorsports
06-18-2012, 04:13 PM
i am converting to 5spd. very soon.
I got the forester stuff for free, so i figured id give it a shot. suspensions all going to be in trial and error for me till i figure out something i like. but i'll keep that in mind! thanks!

Small updates.
Busted out the steering lock today (required to race)
Disabled the power door locks (also required)
Removed the airbags (again required)
Wired up my push button ignition switch
then my co driver and i were both hating the paint scheme after we saw it on the car... just looked terrible. so we have a new idea... sprayed the white tonight.. more to come soon...

I was in portland a couple days ago with the outback picking up some parts and pulled into a plaid panty to get on my phone and get directions... wasnt there for one minute and this girl walks up to my window. (she was about 30-40 and probably strung out on heroine) Conversation went like....
Her: Excuse me, I really like your car, do you have a cigarete?
Me: No, i dont smoke sorry
Her: Oh, well do you have a dollar?
Me: All my money is on plastic sorry
Her: Oh, Well i love your car that pink is hot, would you give me a ride down the street?
Me: Im lost, and late i really cant im sorry
Her: Jesus, do you wanna fuck!?
Me: hahahahaha *rolls up window and locks doors*
Screws loose.... i think she flat out lost hers and all the marbles to go with it.

What was involved in putting in the WRX dash? Swapping heater cores? Dash beam, ect?
MonstarMotorsports

i didnt swap anything but the dash its self and just threw to bolts in it on the sides to hold it in place. its solid. it would fit better if you swapped out the bar.

sorry guys been busy/broke havent done much work on the car lately.
Couple small updates how ever.
car is not ready to be jumped lol. luckily it only broke the headers, and not the oil pan.
So instead of new seats this week, i ordered new tsudo UEL headers and high flow cat, and i'll make a custom 2.5" mufflerless catback to go with them.
and i'll start making my skid plate tonight to prevent this problem from happening again lol. And i got the front mud flaps on.

might i suggest 2.25" piping to help preserve back-pressure (and thereby power)?
lord flashheart
07-03-2012, 07:11 PM
2.5-3 Inch is the ideal size pipe for engines up to 300HP.
2 stroke engines need a proper amout of back pressure, because if they use intake charge to expelle the exhaust gases. With out back pressure the intake charge flows out the exhaust. 4 stoke engines on the other hand need very little back pressure. I think that the misconseption that the need back pressure came from the fact that the length of the exhaust needs to long enough to keep the fresh oxegen from going back up to the valve and creating a lean condition outside the valve and burning the valve. Pipe side is also important. If the pipe is to small it constructs, if its to big the exhaust gas expands, cools. Which makes the volume of gas harder to move. Size and length is important....
MonstarMotorsports
07-03-2012, 10:25 PM
in simple terms... the outlet on the headers is 2.5" there would be no reason to down size the piping for the catback to 2.25". Keep it the same all the way out the back.

I do NOT recommend Tsudo headers to anyone. the fitment flat out SUCKS. i cant even change my oil filter at the moment, nor did they bolt up very well. took some modification and a ton of struggle to get all the bolts in. now i need to figure out how to bend the headers a little bit by the oil filter so i can change it with out pulling off the exhaust... wasnt very happy.
and this is all im running for exhaust at the current moment. it is OBNOXIOUSLY loud. I'll get a video clip here in a bit.

More wiring gremlins..... bout to blow my head off lol.
hopefully what i think is the problem though, is truly the problem and will be an easy fix.
So i put in the wrx gauge cluster. the gauges sorta worked but didnt work right, of course all i had hooked up was the speedo and tach. no idiot lights, fuel gauge, water temp, etc. so there was a lot of open circuits, and i wasn't even thinking about what problems that alone may cause.
havnet really drove the car since i did the swap. But yesturday when i did drive it, the battery died quick during driving it... So obviously the alt isnt working. Tested the battery and alt to make sure, both checked out okay. So im pretty sure because the Battery Idiot light isnt plugged in, it's not allowing the alternator to do its job.
believe it or not, on a lot of cars, that little idiot light is what allows the alt to work or not lol.
So this is what i've been doing today....
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/482106_297735953658436_1987446930_n.jpg
I took the guts out of the legacy cluster, and am working on merging them into the wrx case. Then all the wiring will be the same, everything will work properly. but it will have the wrx look and fit.
Unfortunately i broke the little paper circuit board today not paying attention... So before i can find out of this conversion is going to fix all my problems... gotta go buy yet another gauge cluster to rob the paper board out of...
Anyone happen to have one for sale?
So this is where were sitting as of right now.

changed my mind once again lol.
I got a new cluster yesturday. finished the hybrid wrx cluster, put it in the car and everything worked. but in a rally car, i could just see many problems popping up with it between the dust and vibration something was going to break eventuallly and i didnt want to deal with it. So i just put in the legacy cluster for now, Im going to go after market gauges put into the wrx housing here soon.

MonstarMotorsports
07-17-2012, 03:38 AM
it sits so high off the ground, i cant believe it would ever come in contact with something so hard it could possibly get hung up nor ripped off. how ever im always the type that says better safe than sorry, and ive thought about that. I need to pull it off tomorrow and put a small bow in it to go around the exhaust (it rubs right now) so while its off, i am going to curve the front lip up a little bit as well just in case. But im sure its good to go as is.
if the car got off roaded and dragged across rocks etc... then i would be worried, but in a rally race... its pretty uncommon that plate is going to hit the ground ever. its more a shield to prevent flying rocks from smashing into the body/gastank/exhaust/rear diff.

Well its been a week and i havent done crap to the car other than replace a broken switch from my ignition.
Lifes catching up with me, between trying to get a house build off the paperwork stage, and trying to get back into college, the rally car hasnt been getting any attention... But big changes and $$'s are being thrown at here soon. No pictures today.. but figured i'd atleast post an update so you guys didn't think i quit on ya already lol.
So i sold the automatic trans, and i have to deliver it on the 4th. So i've got 6 days to get the drivetrain pulled out. i figured while i had the car up and the suspension tore apart to break the trans out, i would put on my foz takes offs and get my lift at the same time. Get the front suspension out only to realise i dont have the top spring perches for the foz springs, and the outbacks wont fit. Great start... Then i look down at the engine side of my skid plate and there looks like enough oil on it to change my oil with! so massive oil leak somewhere... Another great start.
So sadly im calling it a weekend already haha.
But starting monday. I'll pull my motor and drivetrain.
Deliver the drivetrain on the 4th on my way out of town for vacatoin.
Then when i get home, I'll be purchasing and installing the following :)
5 Speed Trans and all components i dont have already to complete the swap
New Gaskets and belts for the entire motor
Forester Spring Perches
Pictures to follow...

lord flashheart
07-28-2012, 10:56 PM
^just because its not knocking now, doesnt mean the damage hasnt been done. my friend runs his low because hes not in the habbit of checking it, and he ran it low enough that the light flickered 1 time and 6 weeks later he had a rod knock. if you have low pressure the bearing contacts the crank for a split sec. and you get a couple little pieces of bearing, that debris can get past the filter, and cause more debris. before you know it you have grooves in the bearing, so the oil goes to the groove instead of giving the bearing a film of oil to ride on, and it contacts more, and gets worse and worse till there is no bearing left.
btw. i love your style. this was kinda the plan for my car when i got it, but then i went a different route. anyways yours is one of my fav threads to follow.
MonstarMotorsports
07-28-2012, 11:38 PM

did you trim the dash?
MonstarMotorsports
08-03-2012, 12:17 AM
trimed a tiny bit on the door cards. other wise dash fit perfect.
look at the first picture i posted on the 1st of august a couple post up. you can see the small hole in the door card. thats all i had to do to make it fit. theres about a dozen ways to fix that hole, but when the doors closed you dont see it at all. and for this car... i dont really care about flawlessness. So it can stay as is.
chuckthefuk
08-03-2012, 12:33 AM
good documentation. thank u
MonstarMotorsports
08-03-2012, 12:47 AM
i also have my dash sitting higher than it should. if you used the wrx dash bar, or mounted the dash different and down lower like it should be, it might fit the door card even better yet, require less trimming or maybe even none.
Huffer
08-03-2012, 11:25 AM
I wonder if you took the part of the door card that you cut out, and inverted it, and plastic welded it back in...
Or, just heated up the door card while it's on the door, wrapped tin foil over the dash part and just gently pushed the door closed...hmmm.
MonstarMotorsports
08-03-2012, 01:05 PM
Huffer, absolutely, heat the card from the back, and mold it inwards. would work perfect. Going to be a pain and take some time to get it perfect, but it would work.

need the Manual Transmission H crossmember from a 98-02 forester, or 95-99 legacy/outback.

So even though i dont have any transmission mounts, my excuse for this was i need a good storage spot for the transmission to sit untill then... Just for anyone interested in doing a 5 speed swap in an automatic car. Subaru is extremely nice to us, and has all the holes drilled and ready to go. most of them are just plugged with little plastic plugs. Pop em off and bolt the stuff on! Example is the holes in the body to mount the shifter steady.

I have a hydraulic master cylinder from a 1999 Outback with 8000 miles, mounts right to the transmission. I have the matching clutch fork to go with it if you want that too! I don't need these because when I do my trans swap I'll be going with a cable set up instead of hydraulic.

to someone who is not in the subaru community, they dont know it as the "H crossmember". i would call it the transmount/crossmember assembly, tell them its a 3 piece. because they maybe confusing it when you ask if it goes strait across. because the manual xmember goes strait across, as well.
plus the people who answer the phone rarely ever see the parts.

08-11-2012, 08:48 PM
all i asked for was a 5 speed transmission crossmember. the problem is the idiots have automatics listed as 5 speeds. when i asked them to verify if it was H shaped, i got told no, its just a straight bar. either way, doesn't matter, i found one. picking it up tomorrow!

Huffer wins!
So as for whats been going on.
I didnt get to go pick up my crossmember sunday. had a emergency pop up. So i went down monday, drove the 3 hours one way, only to find out it was bent and half of it was missing... was extremely pissed. So pissed i forgot to rip a VSS out of a trans to take with me lol.
But i did find a really nice intake that the guy only charged me $7 for, so was pretty stoked about that!!
also picked up my starter while i was there too. So i was one piece closer to a finished 5 speed swap.
But finally, heavens doors have opened for me. Not only did i finally get a crossmemeber for $40, it also included the transmission mount (save me another 40 bucks), and I dont even have to spend any gas money to go pick it up! Michelle went and pulled it out of the junk yard for me, and is bringing it to me! I get it sunday :)
This girl rocks \/

Then i went on to some more appearance mods last night. wanted to finish my grill (gutting out the inside bars) so i smoothed them all out, fiberglassed in the holes, and then rhinolined it. I'll push a piece of mesh behind it next.
and this had no purpose at all, other than some looks. But i decided to rhinoline the engine bay and a few other parts while i was at it.

she's about the coolest person i've ever met haha. to bad shes married :( haha
my cowling was cracking bad in spots, so i lined it to help prevent it from shattering, and then i missed up and hit the wipers once and was like screw it, just line those too lmao. I didnt put any UV protectant on it, so it wont take long and it will dull out to a flat black. wont look as bad once its dullled down.
the engine bay i was just bored and wanted something to do and needed to use this last gallon i had before it went bad.

10 days, no update?
because i havnet seen my car in the day light for 10 days i dont think lol.
Been SOOOO busy.
Problem: No trans crossmember bolts
Bigger Problem: no hardware store in this rinky dink town has the correct size metrics bolts.
Solution: Ordered new ones from subaru for less than what i could have got them for at the hardware stores assuming they had them lol.
Downside: they are taking forever to get here since they came from freaking JAPAN!
and im not fast and furious enough to get over night parts i guess.
Brightside: they will be here tomorrow.
More problems. i dont think the clutch fork/slave cylinder i ordered are going to work with this trans for some reason.. it should... but it just doesnt seem like its going to. Once i get a throw out bearing and clutch and put everything together, i'll find out if it will or not i guess lol. hoping for the best. But these 2 bolts i ordered are whats the hold up right now. soon as they get here, i'll have more motivation to get back to work.
doesn't help i just spent my clutch/light weight flywheel money + some on getting my baja protuned either.... whoops.

little update. did the ECU wiring. Here's a little how to for anyone interested.
ECU Pin out for reference
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/251628_316132058485492_1121537140_n.jpg
First locate Pin 79, and 80 and cut them both. These are TCU wires.
Take pin 79 and pull it out and move it to pin 81.
Pin 81 is what tells your car if its a manual or auto. In automatics this pin will be empty. So you need to pin it for the 5 speed.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/393457_316132005152164_1601435926_n.jpg
Splice your new pin 81 into pin 19 (ground)
Then find pin 47, your last TCU wire, and cut it.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/253559_316132041818827_316854250_n.jpg
You'll need to wire your neutral safey to pin 82. (i believe) I'll let you know for sure when i get that far lol.
Your ECU is now ready for its 5 speed :)

Well i ALMOST bailed on this project tonight.... because i bought a new rally car to replace my 08 i got fucked over on.
Picked up a '11 2.5i with a STi scoop and wing and a front lip, and exhaust.
But since im so close with the outback, and quite attached to it now and really wanting to run it, still going to go ahead and finish it and race it this year.
my '11 is about 2 years out fund wise for being finished anyways once i looked at it from a realistic prospective. So the project will continue!
Ordered some hood pins tonight, and installed some schaweeeettt stickers lol. and still waiting on my clutch and fluids to arrive. got a 4 day vacation sat-tuesday. but it should all be here when i get home wednesday. hopefully a running car wednesday night!

So I noticed in this pic, you've got your clutch hose from the master cylinder to the "intermediate doohicky" then a second hose from there to the slave cylinder. I did a little research on this "doohicky" in my '97 Outback and figured that it is a clutch dampener assembly similar to what guys are complaining about in their later model Subes. I bypassed it temporarily and ran the longer of the two hoses from the master cylinder straight to the slave cylinder. Clutch response is much improved. Its totally reversible for the cost of a bit of brake fluid...

So.... Effing.... PISSED. :smt011 :smt021 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013
So I knew i had to work till 7 tonight, and my clutch/fluids were getting delivered today.
The plan was slap on the clutch and put the motor in the car in the 45 minutes i had left before dark and start the car up, so i could take it to the event tomorrow im dying to go too.
I even spent $15 bucks on a fucking .99 cent hose just because i wanted to make this event so badly and i didnt have time to track down a .99 version lol.
ripped my clutch box open. hammered the pilot in, slapped on the disc, go to bolt up the flex plate........ wtf.... it doesnt fit..... GRRRRRRR!
My best guess is this flywheel is for a 2wd subaru... so the pressure plate is way to big for it. EXTREMELY pissed completely fucked up my weekend. But im done with messing around with used junk. I just ordered a brand new flywheel tonight, so i know EXACTLY what im getting and i'll have a part number to prove it. It will be here Saturday. But i'll be on vacation. So i guess we'll be back at this again Wednesday when i get home.
stayed tuned i guess.... :( this 5 speed swap is taking way to long.

hahaha. I feel like a stupid ricer. really wish these weren't required.
My flywheel should be here tomorrow or friday.
Went threw my check list of whats left to be done. Down to 10 things.
1. 5 Point Harness
2. Seats/Brackets
4. Tow Hooks
5. Horns
6. RA Competition Stickers
7. hazardous material spill kit
8.3 DOT reflective Triangles
9. Roll Cage
10. roll cage padding
Then looked at what my budget is going to be like over the next few months, and as long as work keeps going the way its going, i should be able to invest $1200-$1800 a month into the car starting october 1st. So i drew up dead line list.
By the end of October 1-7 will be finished.
By the middle of December i want my roll cage in the shop getting fitted
and by New Years i want the car 100% finished.
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/564064_321957771236254_362048580_n.jpg

Idk man... Miller is the biggest track in north America, with like 6 track variations. There is a set of turns called the attitudes, they are the funnest set of turns I've ever been on. I googled that raceway, now I think a trip to Oregon is in order.

Well i was suppose to leave to night to go to wedding thats tomorrow. and i know im terrible for bailing, but theres just to much work at the shop right now to not put in some more hours tomorrow. But on the bright side... that gave me some time tonight to put in some more hours else where.....

Match made in heaven! Clutch pedal had lots of pressure, and everything seems to be going in smoothly.
If your thinking the motor looks crooked, thats because it is lol. I some how managed to pinch one of the spark plug wires at some point... no idea when, so i'll just get a new set and some new plugs tomorrow. i was debating on replacing them anyways. So i didnt set the motor all the way down in its cradle so i'd be able to get to the plugs easier. But between work and my Oregon Ducks game tomorrow night, Wont be any hours left for the car. so maybe we'll shoot for a running car on sunday!

Spent a few minutes this morning before work hooking the motor up. i think everythings buttoned up and just about ready to fire up. Just need to top off the clutch fluid, and fill up the PS fluid. I looked up my plug wires this morning on prolink.... i cant beileve this common of a car, especially in this area, NOTHING exist for spark plug wires in stock. Not even the Portland or Seattle DC's had a set in stock. blows my fucking mind. I figured they would have a couple sets i could pick up this morning. So i ordered a set, but no idea where they are coming from or how fast they are going to get here. So Sun/Mon might not happen after all. Guess well see. Either way i'll get everything else finished and and put back together so hopefully i can just throw in the new wires, fire it up and goo!

I did get my NGK plugs though, so they went in a couple days ago. Guess we'll shoot for friday to have a running car once again.
Also going to order my first corbeau on Monday! :)
Ordering one at a time because my co driver is right on the verge of needing the wide version, so going to see if he fits in my normal version before i go spending an extra 50 bucks on his "ass" no pun intended....

Boy oh boy..... what a rough start.
So my NGK plug showed up, and were the wrong ones. So i called my little hole in the wall part store to see if maybe by chance they had a set of wires since the big guys didnt have them. They did... 63 bucks for some cheap ass chinese pieces of shit.... So i bought em. put them in, car had a real hard time starting, then when it finally burbled to life it was idling at 3k RPMS! shut it off and said good night.
So this morning, i put my exhaust on, fill the radiator with water, and attempt to drive it to the shop so i could finish it up. Still super high idle, running like shit, over heating on the way down there (not enough water) making a terrible noise like a bad wheel bearing, i was missing a front axle pin because my axle was 180 degrees spun the wrong way, no power steering. it just wasn't a pretty story. but i hobbled it down to the shop and put it on the lift and starting going to town. started with fluids, dropped some antifreeze and fresh oil into the motor, then pulled the wheel off, the 14MM bolt on the knucle that holds the balljoint in, decided the head was going to break off it..... fucking LOVELY. so next time i need new ball joints, i'll have to buy an entire new knuckle. for now im going to hope that bolt stays stuck in there lol. fixed the wheel bearing issue (nut just backed off) spun the axle around and got a pin in it, filled the powder steering fluid, and fired her back up. the idle magically fixed its self some where in there, so drove it to the gas station, filled it up with some premium and a bottle of fuel system cleaner, and drove it around town a bit. it finally settled in and starting behaving properly. So i ventured out into the country for some rally practice. got about 5 miles out of town and boom starts over heating... pull over and realize theres just a trail of water behind me. my lower radiator hose blew off. guess i missed checking that in my underside double checks... well this is lovely. 5 miles out of town on a gravel road with no water or cell reception.... luckily it was all down hill. i was able to coast the entire way untill the first farm house i found and this really sweet 80ish year old lady let me use her garden hose. she was in love with the sound of hte car. she kept telling me what a nice pur it had lol. cute old lady.
So head back up the mountain and finally got to have a little fun. only got 2 more issues to sort out. My shifter bushings are completely SHOT. when its in gear it wobbles like its out of gear, and because of this, i cant seem to find third gear coming from second. i keep hitting first... sometimes if im lucky i hit 5th. it takes some hunting with that wobbly ass shifter to find 3rd lol. So gotta get that fixed asap. and then i have a really bad pop some where in the front end. So need to track that down, i dont like pops lol. but for the most part cars running like a champ and i love this 5 speed :)

sucks man, can you drill out the bolt?
popping noise, is the "dog bone" pinch stop tight?
all the trans mounts tight?
hope its not related to the ball joint.
MonstarMotorsports
10-07-2012, 02:14 AM
i could... and for about 1 minute i started too. but to me it would be less work to just replace the knuckle than trying to drill that bolt out, and hitting it with a tap.
im 99% positive its stuck in there enough its holding on just as strong as before. So since nothing needs replaced right now, I'll just run it. Soon as i need a wheel bearing or ball joint or something, I'll get a whole new knuckle and redo it all.
and now that you mention it, i forgot to even put the pitch stop in period bwahaha. I'll put that on the list for tomorrow. Don't believe that was the clunk how ever. but ya never know.
also painted the hatch to white today. the grey had been bugging me forever, finally got around to doing it.

What sanctioning body oversees the rally that you'll be running in? What kind of cars run in open class?
MonstarMotorsports
10-07-2012, 02:38 PM
I run in Rally America events, and i actually changed my mind to run in Open Light instead of Just open.
Open class is pretty much no rules, run any car, with any kind of swap and compete against who knows what. Lots of turbo's in Open class.
Open Light is restricted to NA cars only, but other wise open to pretty much any modifications.
Personally i think theres more/better competition in OL, so i went that route.

Nice, the pinch stop can make a clunk sound under acceleration and deceleration.
Nice I'm stoked to see someone from sli representing In rally America. I originally bought my car to do rally but the only rally events in this state are rallyx. The stock legacy suspension performs awesome in rally especially coupled with an NA engine turbo engines can fling the dirt around and is great for power slides, but at the end of the day a flat powerband will triumph. I was beating audis, RSs, and even wrxs.

Its got an open O2 port, and an exhaust leak that need to be fixed. i hope that will quiet down some of the terrible sound in it.
I think im going to have to throw a muffler on the back though. it sounds alright under 3000, but after that.... i just feel like a ricer lol. Well im quickly falling weeks behind on my previously posted schedule. I decided a really big nice new tool box and some new shiney tools were a little more important this month. So there went a roll cages worth of cash. On top of other personal issues that costed me a small fortune over the last couple days.... im probably a month behind now.
But!! Money's and time are still getting spent on the car. Ordered a nice grounding kit i desperately needed and had to do a little rewiring today to clear a couple codes caused from the 5 speed swap so it would run better. Also fixed a funky issue i was having with the stereo. And got a rally visual package coming here soon too. Get it looking more like a rally car finally.
I'll get some Corbeaus coming first part of november. So dont give up on me yet!

Corbeau seats are finally ORDERED! They will be here 1st of November. (Waiting the extra week longer was worth saving 60 bucks haha)

And lots more progress throughout november, promise!

Happen to have dimensions on the projectors you used or anything like that? How much you had to cut out the sube housing and all that.

i used 2 1/2" projectors, which is pretty much standard size.
I only cut the back of the housing (picture) so that the rear of the projector would be accessible enough to get to the bulb easily for changing.

Did you end up making a second interior housing for the low beams or are you restricted to the single projector beams for headlights now?
MonstarMotorsports
10-30-2012, 12:58 PM
i was going to make a second one, but changed my mind and decided it was pretty much useless for my case. by the time i have 4 driving lights on the front, i'd never even see my high beams anyways, so i didnt go threw the extra work. But it wouldnt have been much harder. could have glued the reflector into the housing the same as i did the projector, cut one more hole in the back, and just stuck another bulb in.
Not an update, just a sweet picture from outside of work this morning at the crack of dawn.

Well guys, this is going to the second to the last update for a while... (next one is super minor)
I've got some legal issues that might cost me my license for a year, and if thats the case i wont be racing :/
and in the market for a new diesel, so between layer fee's to try and keep my license and the truck, rally car money is going to be tied up for the next few months. Hopefully by spring time i can focus on getting back to the car and finishing it. and making it in time for the first race in May, But priorities first...

Another question on your projector retro, did you do anything to seal the space between the metal of the projector housing and the plastic/ceramic of the reflector housing? Also, did you use the trim rings that fit around the actual projector portion off the pilot, or are they just sitting around? WAY interested if you've still got them!
MonstarMotorsports
11-08-2012, 12:22 PM
yes, i cut the hole in the legacy housing bigger so the projector would stick out threw the back further. So i had to seal all that up so the head lamps wouldnt get moister in them. I use the same epoxy to seal it up/hold it in place better. I didnt use the trim rings because by the time i cut them down enough to actually fit in there right, they didnt look right/wasnt enough of them to bother with. so threw them out.

You know, I keep looking at this car and it brings back memory's of my Celica! I beat the crap out of that thing off road! I have been thinking of getting a Justy to do something like this.
My old 83 (over 10 years ago)... thought you might like it... Never mind the rice pipe, it got replaced about 6 months after the pic... lol

You managed to work a brights/high beam into the projector set up? Do tell!
MonstarMotorsports
12-25-2012, 05:21 PM
no, when i would accidently hit my brights my fuses would fry. So i finally got it wired so that doesn't happen any more. It's still low beams only.
