Im looking into what kind of exaust systems people have on there cars im looking for a cat back for now, but i can only find the cat back for thee gt wagons. (btw i have a 98 gt sedan) ive heard the only diffrence between the wagon and sedan cat back is the angle of the exaust flange. is that true? well im grateful for an advise anyone can give me. thanks :!:

Straight Pipe.

A good 2.25" system, with one high-flow cat, and a decent muffler should not only sound fine, but give pretty decent gains, as well.

I'd go custom, though. I've never dealt with pre-packaged exhuast, it feels so ricey.

opinions, opinions, opinions  ...well here's mine:

i run a stromung single-tip cat-back; sounds awesome, turns heads...but a little pricey.

ricey? i dont care what anyone else thinks, my car isnt a community project...

advice is asked for, otherwise its BS...dont worry about anything anyone else thinks, just enjoy your ride

p.s. exhaust systems for wagons tend to come with a muffler made a few inches longer than those made for sedans.

I think someone's panties are a little ruffled.

All I was implying was that a custom-exhaust system, IMO is better, and for the most part, cheaper, than something with a brand-name and some polish slapped on it.

..but, this IS America, and it IS Memorial Day, so I'll grant you the freedom to disagree with me. :D

Much Love, my Legacy Brother! You're my boy Tokio!

I've got a Borla muffler...and I like it a lot. A little pop and back fire on deccleration...and its a bit bassy on throttle...gives a hint of boxer.

thats it...until the swap. Then i'll come back and tell you what I have.

...and yes, I'm keeping the Borla. How can you argue with stainless steel?

I'm guessing a lack of cats (or having hi-flo cats) and no resonator will open up the pathway for a better boxer sound.

gator, whats the law in NH as far as decibels for aftermarket exhausts??? here in Maine its 95... 100 is a snowmobile, so its pretty generous...for once...

<---This guys OPINION is that getting a muffler is ass backwards. Start with the header and work your way back. Unless you find a sweet deal on a catback. That's just my opinion!! I rather have bolt ons see I can do all the work. I don't want to bring my baby to some muffler shop and have some punk kid hack up my car. I'm looking at 3 different catback or mufflers. The Stromung single tip, The Borla catback and my top choice..well thats a secret!!

Im going for a APexi N1 muffler all the way ive heard it sound great with a 02 WRX engine so that's what im going for

i'm with reason...it may have taken me three months to piece the exhaust system together, but it was well worth the wait...

and as gator said, borla sounds very nice and deep on the boxers. that's what i'm running.

any links for me?

i agree that a header is much more important, but he asked for cat-backs, so...

if i had it to do over again, i would definitely go with TWE equal length headers over borlas. while i would lose the boxer rumble and some low end torque, its well worth it for the top-end gains. borlas are only good for a cool sound and a tiny kick in torque, IMO...

before i settled on a cat-back, i looked into borla's and it just didnt do it for me. i needed a deeper tone, so i aquired a stromung.

the other great thing about the stromung: it doesnt look or sound like the average ebay $5 fart can.

You can find borla stuff at Rallitek (look under vendor links)

manufactured exhaust components = dyno proven results, you get what you pay for

custom exhaust systems = no dyno-backed results to expect, but if you build it right they can perform with the best and cost half as much

I agree with Reason, start with a header and build your exhaust system up from there. Nobody finds big gains from just a cat-back system. In fact nobody finds really big gains with cats in the first place, but then you get into legality issues with removing cats and some people chose to avoid that.

My system (EJ22):
Borla EJ25 header
Rallitek cat-less mid section
CEL bungs
2.5" piping
Spintek dual exit muffler

result: bitchin' sound, turns many heads, stock looks, no ricer sound here, and the occational "so do you have a 350 in there?" (but thats just from people that don't know what a "boxer" is outside of what they see on pay-per-view)

I noticed a pretty big difference with the full system together. It may not be the nicest exhaust system but its surely the nicest sounding four-cylinder car i've heard. A deep burble at low rpm that gets scary at WOT.

But like Tokio said all that matters is that you like the exhaust system that you buy, who cares what other people think.

Exactly, basically what you need to do is save up little by little and piece your ultimate system together, then slap it all on at once and prepare to get amazed -- it may even bring out a freaky madscientist laugh! Some vendors have links to soundclips of different exhausts, we should probably start a thread here like we used to have with "what does your exhaust sound like?" so you can get ideas of how different setups sound to help you make your decision. If you don't want rice, stick with stromung, cobb, borla, or some of the "subaru only" tuners, stay away from big brand-name fart cans (apexi, hks, etc.). Check out the forums on rallitek.net , there are lots of discussions over exhaust systems and links to recorded dyno gains, so if you are looking for some more kick, you can pick out the right pieces. A TWE equal length system with a catless pipe, cel-delete, and a stromung is pretty bad ass. I've heard a borla header/stromung catback on a GC 2.5RS and it sounded pretty badass...definately had a crazy boxer growl, sounded pretty mean. My thoughts are that the deeper the tone, the better, nothing like a boxer growl to drown out all the buzzy rice all over the streets in the honda/everything-not-subaru scene. Just do your homework and dig deep, you'll find what you want.

i'm very surprised there's been no mention of scoobysport exhausts.

I was going to write that one but it was late when I posted that so I forgot about it! Those sound amazing...saw a WRX with one on at a rallyx I went to in March, sounded amazing!

hey, thanks for all the advise guys :D so ive pretty much decided on the borla. So does anyone know where i can get ahold of that? i know rallitek has the wagon set up, but is that all there is? if so what do i have to do to make it fit?

I'm considering getting a new muffler because it sounds like ass so I did some looking on ebay. Is it me or are there a million ads for those 5zigen fireball knockoffs? they are $6.00 buy-it-now with $35.00 shipping!!

while cruising the bay I noticed a company selling a "dual loop" muffler...what the hell is that? It looks goofier than hell but I saw the same thing in super street magazine as part of their "JDM SEMA Salon" article.

Should I look into this new technology and do an article for the forum or skip it and get a borla like I have wanted for a while now.

I'd say do something new if it wasn't too expensive and was going to do you well. The borla's been overdone, try something new and give your review!

I agree with Ryan, Is it the one that loops around back in the muffler? I thought about looking into that myself. My money spending is limited for the next few weeks. I have to get my CRX to pass inspection and I have to square away my application for my apprentice program.

try something new! and just think, if you don't like it, it was cheap to begin with and you didn't spend a butt-ton of money on it

We talked about the loop-ed mufflers on LCO. Cliff Notes: It's a restriction, and stupid.

What exactly are they, so I can avoid them...

DOH!!! I don't want a restriction!! I'll be damned if I go the 5Zigen fart can route so what other options do I have that are reseasonably priced and sound great on our cars.

Spin Tech mufflers sound pretty mean and the price isn't bad either. Plus you are able to specify where on the muffler you want your inlets/outlets to be. Only bad thing is they look cheap if you don't paint them or polish them up

http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintec ... hindex.asp (http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintech/spintechindex.asp)

I used to have an HKS hiper can and it sucked. It sounded like crap, way too ricey. The Spin Tech I have now sounds a lot more powerful and isn't as loud when cruising. Plus they don't have any packing so they won't get worn out and louder over time like the straight-through mufflers do.

Werd. I love my boxer sound when I start it up every morning. It growls like a v8, and I'm hearing "Still D.R.E." each time..
