Crankshaft Pulley Removal

So i just picked up a 92 Legacy wagon for dirt cheap. The previous owner was selling it as a "scrap car" cause the timing belt came off..... the car is in really good shape minus the timing belt.

i've already started tearing into it, and i'm hung up on getting the crankshaft pulley out. i've got the radiator out, but i still cant get an impact gun in there because the A/C condenser is in the way. the book i have calls for some proprietary subaru tool meant for taking it off, but i have no clue where to buy one and i'm sure its going to cost a stupid amount of money.

any ideas?

A lot of people have made their own custom tools.

Tip I've seen: Brace a breaker bar (with an impact socket) against something sturdy and cycle the starter once or twice - it'll break it loose. I've never tried this, so I'm not sure how safe or effective it is. If you're cranking on it with the engine off, put the car in 5th gear.

I have done the whole breaker bar with an impact socket trick, just make sure to disable ign. and/or fuel so the car won't start on you. If the vehicle is a manual put it in 5th gear and set the parking brake and you should be able to get it with a breaker bar.

yeah the breaker bar method i'm not too fond of.i like the custom tool idea though. luckily i'm handy with a torch and oxy welder

$45 for that tool? thats not too terrible. a lot better than i expected. i think i might just do that. do it right and not risk busting something or someone

finally found out what was wrong with the car. the idler wheel on the bottom lh side completely sheared off the bolt. there was virtually no lube in the bearing. $30 for a new one. possibly one of the cheapest cars ever. ($450 for purchase and 2 parts)

Fifth gear and the parking brake worked fine for me this morning. 22mm 1/2" socket on a 18" breaker bar.

In the past I have used a strap wrench with a 2" wide webbing strap on a breaker bar with a cheater bar strapped to the body where the battery usually sits. Then an 18" breaker with a cheater bar for about 3' of leverage. Still haven't used the starter trick, it kinda scares me.
