View Full Version : Shifter play...replaced bushings

I still have a good amount of shifter play. I bought the front and rear Cobb stay bushings. And a new oem shifter joint. I have a good amount of side to side play and some up and down.

What did I miss?

Welcome to subaru's crappy shifter linkage design... What year shifter linkage are you using.

Also did you replace or inspect your shifter return spring?

What did I miss?

Is the connecting pin (to the transmission rod) nice & tight? If it's not, that'll cause a lot of play.

What about the ball joint on the bottom of the shifter?

Tic shifter linkage update doesn't work on the older linkages. Mine is from a 90 legacy. Pivot bushings ill have to try. And there is play in the cup where the shifter sits.

you can always source out BE/BH linkage or GD linkage. stiffer shorter and can use the new style pivot. cheap upgrade found at the junk yard.

Junkyards local to me dont have 3rd gen leggys or wrxs.

I also bought a new shifter joint from the dealer. So if I upgrade i gotta find a new home for it

I was wonder if you could clarify the shifter joint vs the TiC pivot.

How exactly did you install the one from Subaru when its riveted to the linkage?

Finding used linkages on SLi shouldn't be that hard and I am sure one of our happy members will be happy to purchase the OEM joint from you for a decent price.

The older linkage design is basically "opposite" of the connections of the newer one, so the TiC won't work.

The older linkage designs also aren't riveted. They're bolted. At least mine is.
