I am looking to replace my stock shift knob on my 1999 legacy gt with an aftermarket one, but can't figure out how to take the stock knob off. Can anyone give me some instruction on how to do this?

Do we assume you're talking about a manual shifter?
Hold tight, turn counterclockwise(leftlooseyrightytighty), carefully ease off leather shift boot from the ridge under knob

Topic moved. The DIY forum is not for questions, as it says in the rules at the top of the forum.

As for the shifter, you have to turn it A LOT. Just FYI. It'll take a while.

I am having trouble getting it to turn. Is there any tricks of the trade that might help?

Pliers with a shop rag wrapped around it would probably get it started. Just make sure you used something so you don't nick up the knob with the metal teeth on the pliers.

A rubber strap wrench will help if it's that tight. Mine was on pretty tight, but my big gorilla hands were able to break it loose

Turn it the other direction first, then back toward the left to unwind it. There's about 5million threads on the shifter.
