View Full Version : How do I figure out what EJ22 I have?

Ok well I bought a 97 legacy gt that was originally a 2.5 thats been swapped to the 2.2 and I'm in the process of replacing the head gaskets and timing. I need to know how to identify if it's just an EJ22 or EJ22E. It just has EJ22 stamped on top of the block, and it has single port exhaust. Seems like the parts are different depending on what year the motor is from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It seems to have a wider than normal timing belt (this being said after comparing the timing belt to the one on my friends 99 impreza 2.2 his timing belt is not as wide but his is also a dual port exhaust)

So far I have figured out it's a phase 1 2.2L, obd2 motor, single port exhaust. I got the engine serial number off the back of the block and it's 393114

why do you need to know? All phase 2 ej22 have 2-port exhaust

My 98 Impreza with the phase 2 ej22 had a single port. My 96 & 97 Legacys with phase I ej22's were single port as well.
I think the consensus is that the only dual port ej22's were 1990-1994 n/a and turbo, some 95's, and very, very few 96's.
OP. Are your valve covers like this: (Phase I)

Or the smooth phase II ones?
They use different head gaskets due to a whole bunch of changes including compression ratio, as well as IM gaskets due to the different bolt pattern of the intake manifolds.

Yeah it's a phase 1. I looked more into it and I'm pretty sure it's an engine from 1996, it's the same as in your pic. My knock sensor has a crack so when looking for a new one I looked for one for a 1997 2.2 and it had a different connection. So I looked at it for a 1996 and sure enough it was the same.. also checked for a 98 just in case. The reason I need to know what year it is from is so I can order the right parts. I'm in the middle of putting in new head gaskets and doing the timing.. and some other little things that need to be replaced.

With all due respect, simply because your 98 had singleport headers doesn't make it a phase 2 engine; likewise, neither does the year, as that is a cross over year between phase 1 & 2.
Perhaps I'm mistaken though. Wouldn't be the first time.

Right, just because it had single port headers didn't make it a phase II. What made mine a phase II was the different internals, intake manifold (different bolt pattern to phase I), wierd maf (prone to breaking :-(), different ecu, etc. It was seriously a pain to get parts for it since none of the J/Y's by me had any at the time. Dealership only. :-(
People describe the Phase II ej22 as having ej25 SOHC-style heads. And having looked at the EJ25 sohc's I'd tend to agree, except for the whole 1 & 2 port exhaust thing.
