Over heating issue.

Ok so i will start with a little history..

Bought the car with 123xxx on it and it had a tick in the heads.So i pulled the motor got another set of heads and had those sent out to a machine shop in Orlando and had them completely redone..I installed them with new head gaskets, Arp studs, Subaru thermostat,Water pump,Oil pump,Borla headers and a 2.25" exhaust system, and Lighter flywheel and clutch setup..

Now the car has 172849 on it and i am having an overheating issue,BUT only at idle..Lets say if i drive the car 10-15 miles stop and go traffic and go to taco bell drive threw it will start to over heat.. i have searched a few times but get soo frustrated i just walk away from the computer..

Yea they are coming on.. It overheats faster if I have the a/c on while idling as well..

Se let me get this straight:

You can cruise on a freeway at 75 MPH for 20 minutes with no issues? But once you come off the freeway and come to a complete stop, your engine begins to overheat?

Sounds to me like either your radiator is gummed up with debris or additives. If it cannot move fluid through the cooling system fast enough, you will start to overheat... especially if you are coming to a stop after the motor has been running in the higher RPM. It might be that the air moving accross the radiator while in motion is just barely enough to keep your car cool... then at a stop, even with the fans running, it cannot cool the fluid as fast as it should be.


The other thing I would be suspecting would be a faulty thermostat that is not fully opening OR the water pump is on its way out causing the system to not be able to cycle coolant through the system as quickly as it needs to in order to keep up with the engine temps.

Yea i can drive to tampa from Fort Myers on I-75 and as soon as i pull off the highway at the 1st light it will start to over heat. brand new radiator in it.

And you are not loosing coolant? Or having to refill?


If you are not loosing coolant, then there are only so many things that can be causing this. I would be thinking waterpump or thermostat if radiator is new.

Bottom line is that your cooling system cannot keep up with your motor when it is not getting tons of air from driving speeds.

Check to make sure that BOTH fans are coming on on the radiator.

I'm pretty sure it the head gaskets..I don't want it to be, but as seeing on my way home tonight the crank pulpy has walked it self off the crank... And yes it's losing water.. I can't complain I'm pretty hard on her..

So the question at hand is what do I do now?! No matter what I'm pulling the engine tonight. So I am looking for a nice,smooth daily drive setup!! What do you guys think would be a nice setup?! I'm not looking for gobs of power, I have a turbo ls1 rx7 for that..so what is your guys best idea for a nice daily setup?!

I'd check the heads and deck if necessary, throw in some new gaskets and a new crank pulley, and get back to beating the hell out of it :wink:

Where are you losing coolant? Why do you suspect the head gaskets? What does any of that have to do with the crank pully?

I don't see it leaking anywhere.. If its not coming out it has to be going in the engine.. The crank pulley was just the final straw to make me rip it out and replace everything so I can have my reliable subi back. I can't have a car that has on going issues when I'm carrying around my 11 month old son.

Does the overflow bubble? If you get the heads resurfaced make sure they get them smooth enough for a MLS gasket.
